My first overnight hiking trip of the summer was through the Hylite Canyon area all the way back to Bozeman, overall about 20ish miles. Hylite Reservoir is a great place for people to go to get out of the crazy summer heat of the high plains. It has a huge lake/reservoir to go swimming in, a dozen or so trails to hike and a ton of waterfalls coming down the mountain (see the journal entry: url="http://www.travelblog.org/North-America/United-States/Montana/Bozeman/blog-93291.html" target="_blank"A Hike Up Hylite Mountain). It was a nice hike through some thickly forested evergreen trees and through some nice Alpine Meadows. Believe it or not, I learned something on this hike! Yippee! Here's a list of what I learned: Bluebells are NOT poisonous I learned that Blue Bells (this is a lin... read more

Long time no write. I don't know what it is, but I guess that feeling like I am not really in too foreign a place doesn't beg me to write it all down. But that isn't to say a lot hasn't happened since I last did an entry, it just means that nothing too alien has happened. Unless you count the rockies. Driving into Banff from Kelowna was extraordinary (if a little chilly). I was finally on my own, since my housemate Bryce went back to Vancouver as I pressed on. When I left it was hot - a good twenty five degrees - and as I climbed into the postcard peaks I was often surrounded by snow. Something that you ho-hum in a car but you chatter and shiver on a motorcycle. Along the ... read more

3 bored law students on break itching to hit the open road + 1 borrowed car = experiencing an authentic Montana high school rodeo. We didn’t particularly have a destination in mind for our roadtrip as the general area of Montana was good enough. We weren’t sure if Sam would make it across the border as he had an incredibly old Hong Kong passport and an expired Canadian passport with no current proof of citizenship. Truth be told, we were half convinced that Sam would be rejected at the border or denied entry on the way back. Miraculously/sadly, neither happened. Perhaps the border crossing at Glacier National Park is more sympathetic to foreign looking tourists entering the country eager to snap photos of lakes and mountains. First stop was a small town called East Glacier ... read more

This event has been occurring now for twenty seven whole years. Some of you may know that the number twenty seven is kind of an interesting number for the fact that it's prime factorization is 3 * 3 * 3 or 3 raised to the third power. This will be the last time in my life that I will be a number raised to itself (4 raised to the fourth power is two hundred and fifty six, I'm not holding my breath on living that long). So to kick off my twenty seventh year of existence off in the right spirit I decided to get up early with ... read more

The time late April, the place Northern Yellowstone National Park, the People: Mike Sulock, Kezia Manlove, Mike "Moon" Sweely and myself. The four of us decided to go forth and hike up through the Lamar Valley close to the location that I saw the Grizzly and the Wolves fighting over the dead Buffalo carcass in . The actual goal behind this hike was to make it to "Dead Bear Springs", but we didn't quite get to the springs (though we saw it from a distance). If you aren't looking for an intense hike with lots of ups and downs, this isn't a bad hike to do. It's fairly flat along the high plains, BUT if you are nervous around large 'ornery' buffalo than I don't recommend it, we encountered roughly a half a dozen of ... read more

I love Montana. I must have been a Montanan in a previous life or something because there’s just something about the place that seeps into my soul. Montana actually deserves its own travel blog but this is not the time to do it. Unfortunately, on this trip, we’re just driving through Big Sky country and the Idaho panhandle to get back to Washington state. My first visit to Montana was in 1995 on a trip with friends to Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park. I was hooked. I’ve been back twice since then, both times traveling with Cathy throughout much of western Montana. This time we head up north from Sheridan, Wyoming into the rolling hills of southeastern Montana. The brown hills are covered in fresh snow. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is right off ... read more

Shortly After seeing my brothers off my friend Amanda came to pay me and Montana State University a visit! During her visit we got to see a very rare sight in Yellowstone, A Grizzly Bear and a Grey Wolf pack fighting over the carcass of a dead bison about three miles from us! We ran into a bunch of Wolf Watchers with their spotting scopes and hung out with them for a bit and watched the wolves and the bear duke it out for a couple of hours. Here is a little hint on seeing wildlife in Yellowstone: Don't watch the woods or the horizon for animals and movement, watch for the people. There are so many dang people, that when one person sees an animal, it really causes a traffic dilemma, so just pull ... read more

To become aquainted with the Travelblog and learn how to use it I will publish several of our previous trips. In September 2005, Karen, Amber and Wayne loaded up the old pickup camper and headed west to Glacier National Park and other places west of the Mississippi. Our first stop was in Detroit Lakes, MN. to visit Mom Gjersvig and sister and brother-in-law; Karen and Gary. The next day we drove to Western North Dakota and stayed at Teddy Roosevelt National Park (Northern Section). This is Bad Land country. We continued west into Big Sky country. Teddy Roosevelt Visited Ft. Peck dam and reservoir. (I wish I had my boat with). Found a very nice RV park in Havre for a good night's rest. Arrived Glacier in time to get a camp site at Sunrise camp ... read more
