Obfuscator writes: We enjoyed a typical continental breakfast at our motel in Rexburg, before departing for the north. Waffles are good. We had scoped out a couple of potential spots, using the motel's tourism material in the room. One site they mentioned was “The Civil Defense Caves.” The only directions we got from the material was that they were “several miles past the Sand Dunes,” which we had luckily found the day before, and that we should watch for the signs. Another was Cave Falls, in the southwest corner of Yellowstone, a part of the park available only from Idaho. We drove about 15 miles past the Sand Dunes without finding any signs to any caves. At that point we decided that if they were still around, they weren't this far out, and we turned around. ... read more

When one of the guys from my crew mentioned his plan to climb a mountain this weekend, I couldn’t hide my enthusiasm and practically begged to tag along. I’ll take any opportunity to get out on a trail in Glacier National Park. Jake hesitated, “Are you sure? It is a 10,000-footer.” I was insulted. Of course I can handle a good steep hike, and yes, I’m definitely in. I had no clue. Friday morning I woke up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. After filling our day packs with water, trail mix, cheese and beer, six of us Montana Conservation Corps volunteers piled into the CRV and headed for Glacier—we were a regular clown show. After our stretch circle and a pit stop in the bushes, we hit the trail. We walked among the pines, and I gobbled in ... read more

Time had come to get back on the Great Divide Trail and head south before the snow comes to the high passes! Left on a beautiful day. I love the Blackfoot River Valley. Then up to the Seeley-Swan Area before a great find a Coopers Lake. Awesome hidden gem at the south end of the Scapegoat Wilderness, I believe. Finally, a brief fuel stop in Lincoln, MT, made famous as the hideout of the uni-bomber. Then up to the top of the divide to an awesome fire tower and some unbelievable balds!!! Headed south on the trail with heavy winds coming from the West. Camped on some ranch land near a creek just north of Helena.... read more

Well, I spent the 12th through the 15th with Patrick's family. Patrick had to fight fire aka work and/or spend some time on call with the forest circus. So, I spent alot of time with Cody and Wyatt. I actually babysat for a few hours!!! Y'all believe that??? Wyatt had his moments and I was happy to give him back to his mother. Missoula was still a fine town and fall is a special time in Montana...But, time to get on the road. I think I missed my 4x6 tent...... read more

Awoke in Choteau to the farmer diesel trucks going to the feed store and the diesel semis leaving the grain elevators that I camped next two. A nice RVer from Tucson, named Emory brought me over a black cup of coffee, which I of course drank even though I do not like coffee. We talked all about Tucson. He lives up by Gates Pass, where I spent four years racing mountain bikes in and around the mountains by Gates Pass. He said, I wouldn't like it today. 10,000 sq. ft trophy homes going up on the side of the mountain and it takes them 2 years to get the site work done with all the rocks etc. He said the homes truly are ridiculous today, but he has lived in his 2 bedroom home there with ... read more

Onaxthiel writes: We were up quite late in Billings posting updates, so our September 11 wake up was a bit later than usual. It was again a clear morning, though not as warm as the one six years ago that set me on a course for the Army. All in all it was a very martial day for us. All our stops until our final camp were battle sites or scenic. Since order isn’t all that important in this context, and Obfuscator will put up maps that will tell you how we really hit the sites, I will lay out the battlefields in the order they were fought, rather than the order we visited them. This will be a rather dry entry for most people, I think. The first place we went was the Fetterman fight. ... read more

Woke up very early today as we had a massive, massive drive. We had to drive to the hospital today and take Lucy to get her surgery. After hours on the phone, Jon finally worked out how we were going to do this. We were to drop Lucy off at a hotel nearby so she could get her operation done then rest afterwards. We’d then meet her in Chicago if she was well enough and she’d continue the tour with us. Soon after we packed the van we were on our way. We drove for almost 12 hours today before we finally arrived at the campsite. We had dropped Lucy off and stopped for lunch but besides that we’d been in the van all day long. We set up our tents and made dinner. Tonight we ... read more

Beautiful Day...Cold Morning... I have about mastered the art of riding 70 mph, going straight, and keeping the bike at an 80 degree angle into the wind. The gusts get a little hair but when you have 30 mph crosswinds, I have found this is the way to ride to survive... Drove through Wiliston, ND, which is the center of the oil boom in this part of the country. Business was booming. I guess when crude hits $80 a barrell Texas license plates chase oil everywhere from North Dakota, to the Middle East, the Gulf of Mexico and anywhere else they can find. I ate a good hot breakfast in Fairview, MT at the border of Montana. Anybody who wants to work can find employment in Wiliston... Took HWY 200 all the way across Montana looking ... read more

Today we had a few hikes to do around the wonders of Glacier National Park. We got up early, ate breakfast and headed for Glacier National Park to hike. When we arrived there were plenty of people around ready to go hiking and there were also mountain goats roaming around. We started the hike but without Jon. Tour groups weren’t allowed in the National Park unless they were with an official tour guide, so for the duration of the hike we pretended we didn’t know Jon. The hike just went through a massive valley where glaciers once were a very long time ago. We were told to hike until we get to a lake which we did but we could only see it from a distance we were still very high. We took some photos and ... read more

As planned we set sail on the good ship Malaspina en route to Bellingham for a three day poor man's cruise. A unique setup where you are permitted to pitch a tent on the upper deck or win the dash for a sun lounger on the open sided solarium, also on the upper deck. We were well prepared and even beat a German couple at their own game. The next three days were spent cruising through the now famous Inside Passage. We feasted on provisions we bought prior to boarding which included such delicacies as pot noodles, pringles and the now obligatory trail mix. Not exactly a novel experience for two ex naval personnel but a relief to find there was no watch keeping, man over board drills or evening rounds. To while away the hours ... read more
