After 21 years of rambles that took me across the U.S.A. and six continents, I find myself back in my childhood home where many things have changed while some stubbornly will not. This blog has gone a lot of directions although mostly travel recollections while later blogs explored the nuts and bolts of travel in Eastern Indonesia. I have been pondering bringing it back for a while as a way to share lessons I am learning as a caregiver and hopefully allow me to process everything better. So I guess the first question is why on earth I came back here when I was living the expatriate dream in Indonesia? It began with a message I had dreaded. I was in bed on a Sunday morning foggy headed from excessive celebrations from the previous day's match. ... read more

Sunday: Decided to check out some St. Louis open houses. It's an interesting city with some super old mansions and some super run down neighborhoods and trash... I went to 5 houses 3 which were reasonable ok condos or houses in the 110k-160k range and then I spent some time in some gorgeous mansions. One which was over 7,000 square feet!!! Had it's own humongous arcade room. Even so, it was going for 950k. In the evening I signed into virtual bookclub! Wednesday: Went to an Irish bar not too far away which had an Irish band jam session. Thursday: Found an event online called "beer and christmas carols" apparently that was a ruse to get people to come to church... very not clear about that. Soooo that was interesting. Let's bribe the non-jesus lovers with ... read more

Sunday: Started off the morning with a lovely walk to a coffee shop a mile away. Clear, sunny morning just a little chilly and crisp air. On the way I tricked Copper though as we stopped to get a nail trim at a pet store. All was better when he got his pup cup though :) In the afternoon I went and heard the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra play. It was their first in person concert since the pandemic and they were quite impressive for all being in high school. I seriously missed live music sooo much! So nice to be able to appreciate live music again! After the concert I went and wandered around Union Station which had been decorated already with their Christmas lights. I will say over half the people there were ... read more

Sunday: Started the morning with a hike at Pickle Springs- about an hour out of town with tails on the trails. Not many people on the trail and some really gorgeous rocks, water and hills. All around an excellent hiking trail. Monday: The Glenn Miller Orchestra came to St. Louis for 1 night. I love the music by Glenn Miller and this is the touring band that has been together since 1956. It's just so nice to hear live music and big band music is just divine. I definitely was not the target demographic of the concert- I think some of the audience members might have seen the original glenn miller band :D Tuesday: Went to another meetup with the childfree women's group. This time we went to Chevy's for Taco Tuesday. I don't think I ... read more

What a great first week in a new city! My airbnb is great- I'm right next to historic Lafayette square. I've rented a converted basement unit with it's own entrance. Essentially it's a basement rec room turned into a studio apartment- little kitchen which could be a wet bar and then big large open room with a desk area, bed area and living area. It's a little cold being a basement but otherwise really functional and nice. Sunday: First thing in the morning Copper and I drove out to the outskirts of the city for a hike with a group called "tails on the trails" a dog hiking group. Copper was in heaven and the scenery was great. Nice group of friendly people and dogs. Nice views of the Meramec river and gorgeous fall foliage! In ... read more

9/20/21 We left West Memphis this morning at 8:45 and 77 degrees and found our way back onto the Great River Road. And it has occurred to me today what took me days to figure out last time we drove the river…it isn’t about the river. You can drive miles and miles and never see the river. It is about the towns along the river that depend on it for their sustenance. Many are very small. One was population of 41 and another 197. The homes are modest and many are not well kept, a good indication that poverty reigns in the Mississippi Delta. But the fields…well, they are rich. They are rich with dark, fertile soil that produces corn and soybeans and lots and lots of cotton. And the industries that support these crops are ... read more

The day started on the North bank of the Ohio, in the beautifully renovated red brick town of Madison. It had been an important center for my friend Susan Cutshaw, growing up in Kentucky, and I spent a little time documenting what it looks like now. Rode back up to join US 50 again, and trundled West through corn and soybean fields to St Louis. I arrived at the peak of rush hour, facing the sun and condemned to the tangle of freeways that cross the Mississippi and encircle the city. Somehow I made it out on the other side, and drove up to Washington on the Missouri for the night. Days Travel - Madison IN to Washington MO : 349 mi.... read more

Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park Kanas City Missouri The collection began in 1986 when the Hall Family Foundation acquired 57 works by artist Henry Moore. In 1989. Aaron & Patrick always give so much detailed information on their tours, I couldn’t remember every piece but these are some of the details that I could remember. Mark Di Suvero, Rumi, the first steel sculpture we saw, painted the orange colour of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Named for Jala al-Din Rumi, the 13th-century Persian poet and spiritual leader. Claes Oldenburg’s Shuttlecocks - 5 dotted around the park made from aluminium, & fibreglass reinforced plastic George Segal, American Rush Hour. 5 people oblivious to one another during rush hour.
