As I was driving into town, I immediately noticed how huge the Gateway Arch is. It’s 630 feet tall. Thanks to my grandkids, I learned a few months ago that you can take a ride inside of the arch to get to the top. I did it and it was really cool. From the top, I was able to see the Cardinals playing the Phillies.... read more

Sunday morning, May 20. We started the day in St. Louis and had a lot of sites to see before we depart. I checked our location with my new app and noticed that we started today at 38.6 N, 90.2 W, with an elevation of 460.1Ft. After breakfast and loading our car, we set out on foot to visit the Gateway Arch. Jackie and I have traveled a lot around the world and I can say without hesitation that this structure is one of the most fascinating that we have seen. I took a lot of photos, see below, but there is no way to capture this. You have to come see this yourself. We took the tram ride to the top. It worried me a bit given my claustrophobia, but made it without a problem. ... read more

Saturday morning, May 19th, we departed from Oak Brook, Illinois heading to St. Louis. This would be one of our longest legs of the trip, about 270 miles. I researched the location of Route 66 before departing Atlanta. The route starts in Chicago but is pretty congested these days in the beginning. So, I waited until we reached Pontiac, Illinois before leaving I-55. We noticed right away that there was a Route 66 museum located here. I visited the museum while Jackie stayed in the car. I enjoyed what I saw and recommend it for anyone with an interest in this history. Since Jackie was still in the car, I grabbed a map and we drove about 20 miles along the Old Route 66. Wow, it is scenic but it doesn't take long to understand why ... read more

Today we toured the ranch that all of the Budweiser Clydesdales are born, raised and trained at. It was so awesome to see these gentle giants and some of their babies. There was one named Toby and he was born today just after midnight. Great experience!... read more

Hello, As the final days of 2017 approach, we have decided to really celebrate this New Years by spending 10 days enjoying warm weather and sunshine while cruising in the Caribbean. We have gone on quite a few cruises in the past, but this is the first time we sailed during the year-end holiday season. Hurricanes earlier this year hammered some of the Caribbean islands and that has partially affected our original itinerary, but we will still be going to plenty of interesting places. Happily our friends Joyce and Jerry Deming (from the 2016 cruise) will be joining us on this cruise. Even though you will not also be coming with us on the Regal Princess, you can still read each day about our trip on our blog. As always, we want to say THANK YOU ... read more

Opted for Springfield MO to check out the Fantastic Caverns versus St. Louis MO since we have seen the arch on television ? Decided not to go to Branson MO 'cause we're not gamblers and not in the mood for a show. 60W was a crazy cool road! Long, curvy, no ? and never ending dips, twists and turns...our Subie sure is doing great, however, it would be super fun to be driving the MB? on this road. There was one point driving through the Mark Twain National Forest area when you were going up and could not see the next part of the road. It took our breath away like a roller coaster. We both went 'weeeee!' Karen said 'slow down!' I was only going 5...ok, maybe 10 miles over the speed limit ? We ... read more

I-80 is a busy highway with lots of trucks and so, with another windy day ahead, I decided to take a different route home. We traveled south a little from Lincoln into the northeast corner of Kansas, then due east on good U.S. highways. We made good progress and stopped for the night at a nice campground near Macon, Missouri, almost two thirds of the way across the state. Once we hit eastern Nebraska things started to look much greener and now there are plenty of trees and predominantly farms rather than ranches. The terrain is rolling hills and it definitely looks Midwestern. I fished in the campground pond tonight but otherwise we spent a quiet evening at the camper. We've been on the road now for thirty days and we've seen a lot of the ... read more

8/1 After a decent rest in Madison Indiana, We crossed over the Ohio river and into Kentucky, headed south to Interstate 71 and then turned toward Louisville. Taking the 265 to skirt around the main city and traffic, we connected to Interstate 65 south and headed toward Mammoth Cave National Park. On the way we detoured to visit the Lincoln Birth Place and the Memorial, inside the building is a construct of what the cabin looked like that this great man lived in during his first few years and the history of what happened to make him the man he was. A great stop for historians and for kids; it is just a short drive to Santa Claus and Splash Safari Water Park. If you are intending on doing a cave tour you must make reservations ... read more
