Today, we chased totality. What started out as a carefully planned trip to see an eclipse turned into a race and an adventure. At 6am, a new cloud cover report from the National Weather Service predicted 65% cloud cover in St Joseph (where we were) at the time of the eclipse. Two hours away, a small town called Marshall was boasting 39% cloud cover. I packed up our stuff, woke the family up, and piled everything and everyone into the eclipse-chaser minivan. We set out for Marshall! We took smaller highways to stay within the path of totality and (hopefully) avoid any serious eclipse traffic from Kansas City. We arrived and settled into an aviation museum in Marshall. The kids ate hot dogs and watched an airshow. The sun teased us a few times from behind ... read more

Last night, we decided to check out the East Hills Mall near where we're staying. They had a free traveling planetarium show there, and there's a carousel in the mall as well. The planetarium show was OK. I think the kids liked seeing the constellations, and I know they liked the preview for the total solar eclipse that's tomorrow! Now we have this day in Saint Joseph that we don't know what to do with! A friend recommended the Trails West! festival, but, as it costs money and it's hot out, we've opted to skip. Instead, we headed to the visitor's center that's attached to the East Hills Visitor's Center. They had a few photo ops set up as well as lots of merchandise to purchase. We chatted a bit about the forecast for tomorrow because ... read more

We left Omaha this morning at 7:40 AM and 63 degrees. (The temperatures actually got up to 93 before the day was through.) The goal was to reach the Mississippi River Byway in Fetus, MO by the end of the day. Festus is a small town of 11,000 just a few miles south of St. Louis. We made it, but it was a struggle. I was very tired today and had some difficulty being attentive. In fact, I will confess that I almost nodded off a few times, which is very unusual for me. It wasn’t so much the drive as it was a lack of sleep. Last night we had a room in a hotel where there were long-term residents and it reminded me of a college dorm. They were socializing in the hallway and ... read more

Well, this is it: eclipse weekend! We've joined millions of people heading into the path of totality. From central Iowa, the easiest places to travel to totality are Nebraska and Missouri. I chose Missouri simply because we go through Nebraska all the time, and this was a chance to drive somewhere new (to us). Last fall, I booked rooms in Saint Joseph. I called a handful of times over the months to confirm my reservation, but I was still nervous about not having a room when we arrived. We packed our tent just in case! It ended up not being a problem at all. We arrived in Saint Joseph around 11am, but our room wasn't going to be ready until 3pm. We got lunch at the Cracker Barrel next door to the hotel, and then we ... read more

We got going early again today. We started out at 7:30 and 72 degrees and set out to find the Great River Byway and drive north on the west side to cover areas we did not see yesterday. The map that we obtained for the byway, showed that the road we needed to follow was Hwy 79, and it showed that this highway intersected I-70 just north of St. Louis, and so we headed off to find this intersection. Our hotel was about 15 miles west of the city, so we drove east. We drove east three times and back again. We never found this intersection. We even asked a policeman who was sitting in his cruiser by the side of a road. He could not find it either. Together we decided that the old Maine ... read more

We got an early start today, knowing that we had a long road ahead. The plan was to drive from Dubuque, IA to St. Louis, MO. So we got up early and set out at 7:25 and 70 degrees. And the temps actually got up to 91 before the day was through. It took us a few minutes to find the Great River Rd., but we finally did and we pointed the car south. It wasn’t long before we crested a hill and there she was, down in a lush, green valley, the Mighty Mississippi. We frequently had views of her from high on a hill as she flowed along. Again this morning, we were in rolling hills, sometimes high above the river and sometimes right there beside her, close enough to touch. And when we ... read more

July 5th On the road again and enjoying the sights, we left the State of Montana and headed Southeast for the state of South Dakota. Passing by old towns, open country filled with beautiful and interesting scenery. Our first stop on this leg was the city of Spearfish South Dakota, Chris's Camp RV park and a cool dip in the pool. The park is well laid out and far enough from the highway that there is no traffic noise. They have good shade trees and are family friendly, with two pools on the property as well as a small play ground and petting zoo. The WiFi was lacking but we were able to access the satellite to catch some TV shows. The staff is great, helped us get set up and take care of the facilities. ... read more

A fairly normal start to the day. The temperature was mild early on and the sky overcast but the humidity was very high. The morning was spent going on rolling hills on what appeared to be a fairly busy highway into Jefferson City. We had planned a big day of just over 200km and we reached Jefferson City just before lunch. There is a I a of the Liberty Bell there as well as a smaller version of the Capitol Building. But perhaps the most impressive tag we saw in Jefferson City was the massive Missouri River. It is a huge body of water about 300 meters across and flows quite quickly. We left Jefferson City via the bridge over the river. Our track notes said not to take the cyclist/pedestrian bridge and to ride on ... read more

Chasing the race. Up and out around 7am this morning. We had to make our way from Gunn Park back to highway 54. A slight misdirection quickly rectified only added about 1km to our riders journey. We were only 6 kms from the Missouri border and glad to be leaving the flat lands of Kansas. At the border were we stopped for photos there were a number of RAAM support vehicles. Of note there was Maria Parker who holds a number of world endurance records for cycling. Maria was off the bike to support some other riders who were about to come through. This was not officially part of the RAAM Race (I don't think). It was called Heroes on Wheels. The race was over the same course and was a being done by a team ... read more

Travels with Snowbirds Quest for The Stamp May 9-10 2017 Hannibal MO First time I ever posted a panorama picture. Not bad. View from lover's leap. Hannibal sits on a big rocky bluff. This location is called Lover's Leap, and it looks just like it could be. I probably have never been so happy to leave a campground in my entire camping career. Our St Louis campground was a shithole. We know it is not the garbage haulers job to pick up the trash around the dumpsters, but you would think that someone from the campground would have picked it up at least this year, or last year, or the year before it, right? There are so many started and unfinished projects that weeds are growing up around the building equipment left in place at the ... read more
