My most recent mini-vacation was for 4 days and 3 nights. In all actuality, I like to say 2 days and 3 nights because you get there late at night the first day, and then you have to check out and go back home on the fourth day. So for future reference, I am going to use this method of describing my vacations. I am sure those of you who love to travel like I do will understand. We left Thursday night after work without reservations. Coming from the North, the best deal we were able to find close to the city without getting into a rough area, was at the America's Best Value Inn in Litchfield, IL. This was 45 miles from St. Louis. We arrived at 11:00 pm, so we wouldn't have been able ... read more

What a fantastic city! We arrived yesterday late afternoon in Saint Louis, Missouri - a city with very little traffic, totally accessible, friendly people and streets lined with red brick houses. Still a couple of days out from my next Presidential Library (Truman in Independence, MO which is outside of Kansas City). But here is what we did see here: We went out for dinner at John McGurk's Irish Pub but saved plenty of room for frozen custard from Ted Drewes. The restaurant was fairly unremarkable (unless you take into consideration the mother who brought her infant and two toddlers and bellied them up to the bar) but Ted Drewes Frozen Custard was a sight to be seen. About 100 people lined up to purchase their frozen treat and then milled around enjoying their selection. Jim ... read more

Day 18 Kansas City to St. Louis, MO Mom’s house for lunch! We did some visiting and watched the semi-finals of world cup soccer....Germany, What is going on???? Ok so it looks like Spain and Netherlands will be kicking it out on Sunday. In our oh-so-plan-ahead fashion, we pulled up to the Missouri Botanical Gardens at 4:50 and they close at....you guessed it....5:00! Grrrr....but wait....at 5:15 they are re-opening for a concert and....for free!!! Whoot!! Ok so what can we do for 20 min.’s? The gift shop is still open! We had a leisurely walk through the outdoor gardens, sipping on snowballs with shots of rum....great idea!! There was a concert in the park at 7:30, but once again, our stomaches were growling and we headed out for dinner. Schlafly’s Bottleworks was a great local pick. ... read more

We drove south to Kansas City, then east on I-70. We were in and out of the rain, none of the storms lasting more than 15 or 20 minutes. We debated whether to stop in St. Louis and visit the arch, finally deciding we would. We stopped first at Casino Queen RV Park and set up the camper. We then drove back to across the bridge to the Arch Park. Inside, the security was like being at the airport; everything into a plastic bin, including belts, watches, and contents of pockets. Kerry bought our tickets for the tram ride to the top while I browsed the book store. He rushed me out as he had tickets for 5:00 and it was 4:57. We ended up standing in line for close to 20 minutes before squeezing into ... read more

Day 3 Chicago to St. Louis WOW!!!! We love Chicago!! The University of Chicago is amazing! Both Sarah and I fell in love with the school, the city, and the town! The people all have that mid-west hospitality and the city is beautiful. There are amazing parks, beaches . . . even for your dog . . .art, history, culture, music. . . WOW!!! We ate lunch in a small. . . very small sandwich shop Medici's near the university, the food was amazing and . . . the t-shirts proclaimed that . . . Obama eats here! Off to St.Louis . . . and more importantly . . . Grammies house!!! We once again had blue skies and smooth sailing. What is a road trip without a few historical opportunities and unscheduled stops along ... read more

Geo: 38.6276, -90.199Day 10We continued south on I-29 to St. Joseph, MO, outrunning a tremendous storm. Skies were incredibly black, and we learned later a tornado had touched down along our path … but luckily behind us. We took the Kansas City beltway (I-435) southeast around the city and got off in Independence to take in a Harry Truman sight. There are many, since he spent all but his White House days there. We decided on his home, which was quite attractive and the ranger made us much more knowledgeable about our 24th president. We took I-70 east through Columbia, MO, where we stopped off for a Steak 'N Shake, which ranked 2nd on our list of best meals this trip. We arrived home in St. Louis in early afternoon. We put 3600 miles on our ... read more

Well here in olde St. Lois yall going pretty crazy for the baseball stuff. cookoo for cardinal puffs. we might try and catch a game this weekend. so far its been pretty fun here. walk down town for a while. the architetual style here is some kind of hodgepodge from every historically important era. it makes little sense but you can forgive its lack of continutity by its consistensey to be inconsistent. the arch if further proof of this.. what shape says western expansion like the mighty arch? yeah, i dont know but their real proud of it here, so i let it go. so far the food has been pretty ok. im really looking forward to chicago though. the really cool thing here was a place called city museum. look it up if your in ... read more

As it still hadn't stopped raining and there wasn't much we could do with Lewis, as he still can't stand up, we decided to go ahead with our tentative plans to visit the friends Tracey made in hospital last time we came. They live in Kentucky and true to form for Americans, told us it would take 3 hours max to get there, when it was actually 4 hours - they always make out everything is so close. We drove down on Saturday after lunch and it was dry and warm there. They live in a large house in the middle of an agriculture and mining area. Land is really cheap and you can just buy a plot and build whatever you want. Also true to form, they eat junk food, drink fizzy and snack on ... read more
