The hospital changed our time so we didn't have to be there until 7.15. Lewis was fine the night before but in the morning he was nervous. The nurses were very good and let him sniff all the flavours that he could choose to go in his face mask for putting him to sleep. He went for water melon this time - it makes such a difference to the kids who are frightened of putting the mask on, you wonder why we dont do it in UK. He went down about 9.15am and was back in recovery by 11am. He was very shakey an upset but perked up after a while and had a bit to eat and drink. After a while though he started getting leg spasms and needed the valium IV to help with ... read more

We were woken up about 4am by a really load clap of thunder right overhead and fork lightening. We turned the weather channel on and there were severe weather warnings for our area. There had been several tornados in Oklahoma earlier in the day so it was a bit worrying. We rang the front desk and booked the shuttle for 7am to take us to the hospital, rather than driving, in case it got worse. We didn't really get back to sleep after that because of the noise. They had some really nice muffins at breakfast, so we bought back some stuff for our lunch, then set off. Dr Dobbs, Lewis' surgeon seemed really nice. He said he could loosen off the muscles that pull his knees in and make his left hip stiff, as well ... read more

The day got off to a bad start as Tracey had been up most of the night with Alliyah, who was being sick. It was hard to leave her in such a sorry state but it would have caused big problems if she had been coming on the trip with us. Our flight should have been at 10.30am but due the volcano restrictions we were delayed. They handed out food vouchers at 12 o'clock which was ominous but we were off by about 2pm. Unfortunately we had to fly the long way - up and right around Iceland, over Greenland and down the coast of Canda - to get to Newark, which added nearly 2 hours to our flight time. Although we should have had over 4 hours to wait for our connecting flight, we actually ... read more

After leaving New York we took off in the car now we were almost set to be riding in the car for two days. We got one night down and one to go now. It was hard for me to sleep in the car but it didn’t seem hard for Bailey to sleep in the car because she was right in her car seat sleeping away. With me on the other hand, was tossing and turning and trying to get relaxed and fall asleep. I did get relaxed I just couldn’t fall asleep. John and Sue on the other hand probele had the worst out of all! Most of the time Sue was driving but when she needed a break she would wake John up and they would stop some were and switch to John driving ... read more

We safely got to St. Louis after a super long day. Before we were even out of Pennsylvania, a rock flew up and put a nick in Chrissy's windshield. 70 between Washington and Ohio is absolutely horrible with potholes. In Ohio, some long-tailed bird dive-bombed Stefanie's car, but she didn't even notice. It went straight for her windows, then pulled up at the last minute. She narrowly escaped a feathery mess. Apparently, we drove past horses rolling around in the snow along the way, but Stefanie was also oblivious to this and just learned about it now at the hotel. Our accommodations at the Sheraton are awesome despite the fact that we have to use the internet in the lobby. We toured the desolate business area of the city and decided that the Arch looks much ... read more

Geo: 38.6276, -90.199DAY SIXTEEN (Saturday, September 19, 2009)There's no place like home.At the risk of sounding like my sister's blog (see Day 9), I am delighted to return to:- My Golden Retrievers· Tab soda· My own bed and pillow· Air conditioning· No need for DEET or mosquito nettingMy computer (with my travel diary and 3700 photos) crashed on the return trip which gave me that heart-stopping moment I had been cautioned about. (My computer guy eventually recovered it all, BTW.) I had planned to begin my digital scrapbook but couldn't; so I watched four movies (in descending order of likeability):· Duplicity· Ghosts of Girlfriends Past· My Life in Ruins· The HangoverFrom the time we left our h... read more

Because we redeemed AA frequent flier miles for business class tickets, our schedule was a bit convoluted and our travels were long and arduous. We departed Friday afternoon and arrived at Arusha, Tanzania mid-Sunday. 43 hours of travel. Yikes. There we met up with a college friend and bridesmaid (Anne Leverone, St. Paul, MN) and a colleague from Maryville and Maritz (Barcy Fox of Lexington, MA) and jo... read more
