Saint Louis, MO
Out our hotel room window! Too bad the Cardinals are out of town until next week!! What a fantastic city! We arrived yesterday late afternoon in Saint Louis, Missouri - a city with very little traffic, totally accessible, friendly people and streets lined with red brick houses. Still a couple of days out from my next Presidential Library (Truman in Independence, MO which is outside of Kansas City). But here is what we did see here:
We went out for dinner at John McGurk's Irish Pub but saved plenty of room for frozen custard from Ted Drewes. The restaurant was fairly unremarkable (unless you take into consideration the mother who brought her infant and two toddlers and bellied them up to the bar) but Ted Drewes Frozen Custard was a sight to be seen. About 100 people lined up to purchase their frozen treat and then milled around enjoying their selection. Jim had a concrete with butterscotch and I had one with scotch oatmeal cookie stirred in.
Today, we headed directly to the Anheuser Busch Brewery Tour. There we saw clydesdale horses, the history of Budweiser Beer and attended Beer School! Yes, Jimmy and I graduated from Beer School today with a diploma and everything. About 20 people every hour and

Anheuser Busch Brewery half are taken upstairs in the building and learn about different kinds of beers, what makes them unique (how much hops, how much yeast), how to pour them into what kind of glass. With each explanation, we were given a tasting glass with that particular beer. We tasted Budweiser, Shock Top, Beach Bum Blonde Ale and Bass. We also visited the gift shop and reminisced about all the great Budweiser schwag we used to get when Jenny worked at Anheuser Busch!!
We had seen a restaurant on the travel channel just a few weeks before our trip began on the program Man vs. Food. Check it out at (
). Pappy's Smokehouse - the number 1 barbecue restaurant in all of Saint Louis () and it was out of this world! Not for the uncommitted, we stood in line with about 100-150 people in the sun waiting for our turn to place an order. I actually felt my knees buckle a few times and became light headed - but persevere I did!! The promise (and the smell) of that Q kept our spirits up as we waiting for over an hour. Once our order was placed and cold Saint Louis, MO
Clydesdale Horse drinks were sipped, the wait for food was SHORT!! We did meet the owner, which was very cool. A super nice guy who checked on us at least twice and thanked us for making the visit. I assure you, the pleasure was ALL ours. The food was well worth the wait - amazing dry rub baby back ribs, smoked chicken, pulled park that was out of this world and beef brisket that melted in your mouth. Pappy's has three special barbecue sauces: a sweet, regular and spicy - all three of which were so tasty!! Couldn't recommend this place more!!
After that stop and a brief food coma, we headed out to the Ulysses S. Grant National Historical Site - unfortunately just as it was about to close. We did get a brief peek at White Haven his and his wife's home in Saint Louis.
Saint Louis is a very livable city, very middle-America and very conservative. Pro-life propaganda lined the freeway on the drive into the city. There are over 3,600 churches in the greater St. Louis metro area. The weather is much more temperate than any of our previous stops. While the

(Jim's Photo) region is being hit with record highs, Jim and I know that it can get MUCH, MUCH hotter!! You can tell that the locals love their city. Jim made a great observation that when people love their city like this, you end up with cities beloved by the entire nation - like San Francisco, Boston, New Orleans and New York.
We are now just taking a quick break waiting for the sunset before heading back out to visit the Arch. More soon!
