We've discovered there's quite the Paul Bunyan theme in this part of Minnesota! Earlier today, we decided to hike on the Paul Bunyan trail into town to find some lunch. There was a little drizzle, but not enough to put a damper on the walk. I was a little nervous about ticks, as I'd read that Lyme Disease is a problem in Minnesota. Thankfully, the Paul Bunyan Trail is wide and paved. When there was no one passing us, we stuck to the middle of the trail. With the trail and some bug spray, I felt pretty good about us avoiding ticks. When we reached the town, we found a little statue of Babe the Blue Ox. I was amused that the Paul Bunyan theme continued! Later, my grandma's cousin Kevin told me that there's supposed ... read more

Our resort is located on the shore of Lower Cullen Lake, and so we spent a good bit of time on the shore and out on the lake. Closest to the resort is a swim beach that is shallow and perfect for the kids. There is also a little stream that ran next to the beach, which leads down to Nisswa Lake. I guess if you take a small enough boat (perhaps a kayak?) you could head out to the other lake. However, the flow of the stream might make it hard to get back! We stuck to Lower Cullen Lake. The kayaks and paddle boards were free for us to use from the resort, and they also offer a pontoon rental for a fee. My mom wanted to take out the pontoon boat, and so ... read more

We left Des Moines at 7:30 this morning, and we hoped to arrive in Nisswa by 2pm. The plan was to surprise my mom for her birthday at 4pm. Google said the drive should take about 5 hours and 45 minutes, but it's hard to plan an arrival time when driving with kids. Thankfully, we beat rush hour in Minneapolis. My sister got stuck in traffic and sat on the freeway for more than an hour! We passed through the town Baxter, Minnesota around 2:30pm, which is located close to Nisswa. Baxter looked OK, kind of like a typical suburb. There was a Walmart, a Target, and a bunch of fast food restaurants. I worried that our resort was going to be suburban instead of the nice Minnesota getaway I'd imagined. But, as we got closer ... read more

Hi Wombats, Thanks for all of your messages and your great questions I think Lou asked about whether I've seen any kangaroos here and I have to say no because there aren't any kangaroos in America. But you know - everyone here asks me about kangaroos and if you have to be in the outback to see them. Cooper asked whether I have seen any other animals. What a great question Cooper! Just tonight I saw a chipmunk for the first time ever. I took a little video of it, as it hopped around the verandah eating. I asked my friend if it was eating the leaves. She said they were seed pods and the chipmunks fill their cheeks really full with seeds and seed pods and then eat it later. My new American friends couldn't ... read more

We traveled through Southern Minnesota on our way to Wisconsin to visit some friends of Bonnie. We stayed out in the country by Blooming Prairie north of Austin. Austin is the home of the Spam Museum which we visited and found more varieties of Spam than I ever expected. We also went up to Owatonna in a crazy rain storm to visit the Orphanage Museum. The Orphanage was at one time the 3rd largest in the US. In the 1938 it housed 500 children and had 100 staff. As I was walking through the museum, a man said to me, "Can you believe we walked in here and saw our grandfather in this picture right here?" His grandfather had been sent to the orphanage along with several siblings after his mother and two siblings had died ... read more

Hello E&D Wombats and Possums, and anyone else reading! I am half way across the world from you in a little town called Battle Lake, in the state of Minnesota. It took me one whole day and a half of the next day to get to America, on two different planes. When I arrived luckily it was night time so I was able to get some sleep, and then I had one day looking around the city of Minnesota. I walked around the city and found a very large art gallery with paintings and plates and clothing from as long as 100-150 years ago. The next day, I spent nearly a whole day travelling by bus to a town called Fargo, where our painting teacher, Keiko, and I were picked up by two ladies who then ... read more

Geo: 44.539, -92.3495Our Memorial weekend trip. Jeff finally found an opening (cancellation) 3 days before the weekend. We had nothing booked up until then and I kept telling him..."good luck finding a campground open during Memorial weekend". His reply..."I'll find something " Well he proved me wrong after several days/hrs of searching and calling. When we booked it we were pretty excited about seeing this State park. He looked like a nice one. We arrived at around 6:15 Friday night (about a 3 hr drive with traffic and the way GPS took us on the "Great River Road" scenic road). Friendly DNR checked us in and we finally bought our Hiking Club membership. After a quick set up we took a little walk around the campground (as we usually do) and then grilled some burgers. It ... read more

Geo: 43.6667, -92.9744Yes, yes, I can now officially confirm that I am months behind in my postings but apparently it's not all that easy to purchase a condo , make move arrangements, and wrestle with a number of other never-ending issues , all while continuing our North American road trip. I was tempted to pack it in but the noisy demand from our follower convinced me to try and catch up.And while I'm busy making confessions, I would also have to admit to the deep dark secret of liking spam (coffee, popcorn, and spam fuelled my moderately successful University campaign), so when the opportunity to visit the world's only Spam Museum (how can there be only one?) presented itself, we had to make the detour. Spam has to be the Twinkie of the meat world. DH ... read more

Even though I'm 4 days late, I'm starting at the beginning. Do, here goes: The flight to Minneapolis was fine, if you remember to forget that originally you were scheduled to leave RSW at 8:20 but American decided to cancel and change departure to 6:20, thereby necessitating a 4 a.m. wake-up call. However, the call of the Mall of America beconed, so I rejoiced about the fact that I could shop tax-free for 1 1/2 days. Fun time at the Mall, loved the roller coaster ride, too. Then the fun stopped as we dragged our bags back to the airport, onto a tram which took us to the bus for a 2 1/2 hour ride to Forest City. When we finally arrived we were assigned our RV, number 311. We knew that had to be good ... read more
