It's hard to believe Andy's in Two Harbors already. He's on his last map, #2 (#1 covering the trail through Duluth, which he's traversed many times). Tomorrow will be his last re-supply, and it involves a quick hand-off of prepared dried meals, fresh veggies and nuts, and a few other odds and ends--no cushy respite in a hotel room this time. He will push on through to Hartley Park and reach home by mid-week next week, ready to shower and shave and settle into the couch to watch the World Series.... read more

Andy had a little change in plans last night. He discovered that if he were to stay at the Chapins Creek campsite, he'd have to share it with about 15 other people, including some lively kids, so he pushed on to Split Rock, where things were a little quieter. It meant he ended up traveling 19 miles yesterday, five more than originally anticipated. It did include a little detour when he missed a turn on the SHT and walked about a half-mile on a snowmobile trail before he realized his mistake and headed back to Blue Blaze Territory. Someone is looking out for this hiker. Last night's rain wasn't too bad, so his feet just got a little wet, and today was cloudy but dry. He reached the part of the trail that requires a detour ... read more

Our fearless hiker called from just west of Beaver Bay today. He shared the Penn Creek campsite with more friendly trekkers last night. I'm looking forward to seeing his photos of what the guide describes as "the lovely Beaver River with its gorgeous falls." It seems the entire trail route is a beaver highway, judging by the number of times this critter is mentioned in the guide. If Andy doesn't come home with a photo of a beaver, I'll be very surprised. If this weather keeps up, Andy might find himself repeating the phrase my brother-in-law often quotes when he's in the Caribbean: "Another s*****y day in Paradise." Actually, it is supposed to sprinkle tonight, so there's not too much danger of that. Into every hiker's life a little rain must fall. Tonight's "lodging" will be ... read more

Andy was treated to two more days of perfect fall weather. He walked 12 miles yesterday and camped at West Kennedy Creek, not too far from the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center. So much for a peaceful evening; oh, but there's nothing like the sweet voices of children reveling in the wilderness. He didn't say if he saw any rock climbers when he went past the steep rock cliffs of Section 13. When he called mid-day today, he was approaching Mt. Trudee, covering lots of rough but very beautiful terrain. This part of the trail goes through the lovely Tettegouche State Park and past two sweet little lakes, Bear and Bean Lakes. Tonight's destination was the campsite at Penn Creek. This one should be a little quieter than last night's.... read more

After a weekend of living in luxury, Andy set off on the third leg of his odyssey. It occurred to him that he could have taken the weekend break at home, but Ghost Writer thinks it was better for him to stay close to the trail, where the reality of everyday responsibilities remains distant. He'll be returning to the world of bills and yard work and traffic and domestic duties soon enough. He's ready to forge ahead with just one simple food drop-off between now and the end of the hike. It was good to hear more about his adventures. He has his routine down pat and a precise way of packing that allows him to find things easily. We did have some momentary panic on Saturday when he couldn't find his camera once we'd arrived ... read more

Hi - this is Andy again giving my ghost writer Maureen a few days off. She was kind enough to come north to resupply me and take me off the trail for a few days of rest and relaxation. She picked me up at the Finland Recreation Center which is about 142 miles into my journey and leaves about 123 to go. We headed for Grand Marais to pick up some supplies, go to the laundromat and have lunch. Our lodging is in Lutsen, which puts us in close proximity to some pretty areas of the SHT for a day hike. We decided to head up the Caribou Trail and hike to the Caribou Lake overlook and then east to Lake Agnes to check out the campsite and overlook with trail log. We read some of ... read more

Thanks to spotty reception and work interference (darn it, some of us still have to punch a time clock), today's report was unsatisfyingly brief. Andy is forging ahead despite the blisters that continue to plague him at a rate of 14-15 miles a day. The word "dramatic" doesn't appear very often in the parts of the guidebook that describe the terrain he's hiking today and tomorrow. Reassuring descriptions like "relatively level hiking" and "gentle ascent" appear here, along with "two spectacular inland lakes." One of the lakes, Sonju Lake, can be reached by boardwalk. The other thing that came across in our short phone conversation was an urgent request to send him yesterday's Twins double-header scores via text. He does have his priorities. Keep your fingers crossed for a better signal tomorrow and a meatier report. ... read more
Andy on the go

Andy started the day at Horseshoe Ridge, just inside Manitou State Park. The first part of the day was rugged and had beautiful panoramic overlooks of Lake Superior and the Manitou River. The guide mentions a deteriorated trapper's cabin on the approach to Egge Lake--well, the cabin is now squashed by a fallen tree. Andy camped at Egge Lake that night. Today's mile tally: 13, with the first four being very challenging. Andy hit another milestone today: He passed the halfway point of his journey. He was looking forward to coming off the trail for some R&R and celebration. Thanks to his amazing organizational skills, the re-supply rendezvous this weekend will be very easy. I'll be delivering the next installment of trail food, all packed in a box and ready to deliver, which leaves just a ... read more

Andy is apparently truly off the grid today so there's some guesswork in his progress. It's likely he reached the Temperance River, which means he did some fairly serious rock climbing to get past Carlton Peak. The SHT guidebook mentions that there are lots of wooden walkways over muddy spots in this area. After last week's rain, the hikers are probably thanking their lucky boots for the volunteers who built them as well as the many bridges along the way. The Temperance River, down in its deep canyon, must be quite the sight (and sound). There won't be much traffic noise on this stretch. It's easy to imagine Andy reveling in a perfect fall day. There's nothing like a cool, sunny, colorful day in the woods to help you forget about your aching feet. As promised, ... read more

Okay, enough of this goofing around; time to hit the trail again. Andy had a great time relaxing in the Daniels Lake area with Erik and Kurt over the past four days. Tomorrow's post will feature some photos from his detour. But for now, here's some of the scenery from the first leg of the hike. One of the first streams he came to was, appropriately enough, Andy Creek. There are innumerable bridges on the trail, and some of them are pretty impressive. He got some great shots of the Devil's Kettle and overlooks in varying weather. Enjoy the photo feast below! Last night he camped at the Lake Agnes campsite, not too far from where Erik dropped him off this morning to resume the hike. This is a gorgeous area from the sound of it, ... read more
