On Friday, June 24th, 2011, my mom and I arrived in Boston, and from there we drove to Cape Cod. We went to Cape Cod to go to my Cousin Rosa's wedding. It was an excuse to see nearly all of my family members on my mom's side. I saw my grandfather, my aunts and uncles, my cousins, even my cousins' kids. The final night we were there, we had a bonfire. It was also a way to break up our flight to our final destination; Spain. From the east coast we flew to Spain on an overnight flight. We landed in the Airport of Barcelona early yesterday morning. We then drove to a small beach-town nearby called Sitges. We went to my mom's friend's house in Sitges, while my mom's friend was back in California ... read more

The Cape in winter…..searching for lighthouses. You may need to click on a couple of the photos to enlarge. We are carefully walking with our heads down looking at the great granite boulders as we head out on the jetty in the direction of the lighthouses. The squawk of the seagulls can be heard all around, along with the swooshing of the water lapping against the jetty. We stop to look up at the sky, water, birds………we look down as we take steps on the jagged rocks. They have piled these massive granite boulders to create this walkway but you really have to pay attention to where you place your feet, as the rocks are uneven and there are gaps between the boulders. One false step and a ligament could tear or worse….a broken bone from ... read more

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” - Henry Miller To catch all of you up to date, work has brought us to Cape Cod for the winter. We will be here for a total of six months. Never having visited Cape Cod until now a few things that we would like to share with you have surprised us. Cape Cod is not a town but practically an island due to dredging of the canal separating it from the mainland. There are 15 or so towns on the island. We are told that each has their own personality. We hope to explore each of these locations while we are here and will confirm that if we can. Our experience is bound to be unique because most of you will visit ... read more

It must have been the first time in my life that I hadn't been glad of a free upgrade. In fact my heart positively sunk. Fresh from an eight hour bus journey from Montreal, Alexa and I had arrived in Boston ready to pick up our hire car and embark on our road trip a little further down the east coast to Cape Cod. It was coming up to 5pm and so we had reached Boston just in time to take on their legendary rush hour. To make matters worse I had never driven in the US before (let alone a major city like Boston) and had not even previously driven on the right side of the road. Imagine my dismay therefore at being informed by the car hire person that it was my lucky day...they ... read more

We are just back from a 9 day trip to Massachusetts, Cape Cod and Nantucket; we used a time - share week and invited old friends Ross and Brenda to share the 2 bedroom place with us. We have travelled together as far afield as Australia and New Zealand in the past - and they have spent time aboard Gust O'Wind with us as well. A shared love of seafood was evident again this week! Every day threatened rain - but luckily it passed us by, until the last afternoon when the deluge that everyone else on the east coast was getting, caught up to us. We took bicycles and had 3 good rides on Cape Cod trails. A day trip to Nantucket Island, 30 miles off the coast by ferry, was a highlight. It has ... read more

Sylvie, an other Ilexer from Switzerland who live in Middleboro, and me decided to go for a trip to Cape Cod. I arrived at Sylvies house on Friday at 12.30 am (00.30) after my work day. Before sleeping we had a little meeting abour our trip. We left on Friday at 10.00 am and first arrived at Sandwich, a very little town. We found a nice tea shop 'The Dunbar' where we stopped to have breakfast. 'The Dunbar' tea shop (Sandwich, MA): http://www.dunbartea.com/index.htm With a well-filled stomach we got on the road again and stopped in Orleans where we found an touristic information centre where we got information about what to see in Cape Cod. We found a nice place where to walk at Fort Hill. So we found a nice trail to do: The Red ... read more

So much to do! This is not your typical move...no way. Moving to another location in the U.S. is simple compared to this. Mexico will allow us to cross the border once, just once, with household "stuff". Transporting all our wordly possessions is both an art and a science. To import household good, we must list everything...and I mean everything. Each and every electronic item and/or appliance must have listed it's model number and serial number on the manifest. Each box must be numbered and everything in each box must be listed. This is becoming quite a chore for us. Bill and I have been working for a while now packing. I must have this done by Tuesday so I can bring it to the Embassy and get approval. If that's not enough, we still have ... read more

We have a 3000+ mile journey/adventure awaiting us. We are driving from New England to the southern point of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Bill and I have been looking forward to this for a long time. We knew what we wanted years ago and have worked toward it and focused on it. Our van has been given the green light to drive that distance and pull our 12' trailer. Now, the focus is on packing...and packing...and packing. It's difficult to know what to pack now and what can wait till the last minute. I'm already missing my wine keys....they're packed. Damn. That only leaves me vodka to drink. For two people who have been downsizing and simplifying their lives for years, it's amazing how much stuff we still have. Now, before any of you freak ... read more

We aquired our FM3 visas from the Embassy in Boston. It was not the fiasco I thought it would be. We had everything we needed prior to heading up...except passport photos. No problemo. We were sent two floors down to the Brazilian Embassy to have our photos taken. We went out to lunch and an hour later, we picked up our visas. I had thought that we would have to travel back to Boston one more time before we would be handed our FM3's, but that was not the case. It was a pleasant experience and would highly recommend that you check your local Embassay web site for information. The next issue to tackle before we leave is insurance for our vehicle. There are many agencies to choose from...finding them all on the web. By just ... read more
