Provincetown is 20 miles from Sandwich and more than 20 miles from any other port. So we visit here infrequently and plan for a stay of several days. If you do not want to pay for dock space, Provincetown Marina also has comfortable moorings and launch service. Anchoring is possible round the edges of the enormous bay and I have anchored a couple of times. But I never found a good anchoring spot that was anywhere close to town. And tides here are ten feet or more, which makes it very tricky to leave a dinghy on the beach for more than a couple of hours. So these days, we pay for a mooring or dock-space. If you need provisions, walk in either direction along Commercial Street and you will find a little general store that ... read more

22 July, 2013 You know, sometimes just the name of a place will create a mental image of that place, even if you’ve never been there. Or maybe it’s a place you read about in a book and you picture it a certain way. Well, I had a picture of Cape Cod in my imagination, but it wasn’t a whole like the reality of the place. We drove to Cape Cod this morning expecting to see beaches all along the way, but that is not what you see. You don’t even get a glimpse of the ocean or the bay for more than 30 miles. There are some ponds, and you can take side roads off of Highway 6, but you still may not see much. Even on roads with names like “Ocean View Drive” you ... read more

Hi. It's been ages - more than a year - since I've published an entry in this blog. Much has happened since I went to Africa. OH - and so much happened there. Did I ever share photos of Table Mountain? The penguin colony? The baboons? Giraffes? Some day I'll try to fill in the pieces. While still in Africa, I got word that my dad didn't seem to be doing too well, so I planned to get back to states and to head to NYC before too long. By the time I was stateside, he seemed ok and I did a quick trip up to Niagara Falls. Sherry, the Falls, a little tub scrubbing, then down to NYC. What I thought would be a week or two visit in NYC turned into 3 months of ... read more

Hello Everyone. Sally and I just returned from a three day trip to Cape Cod. With summer winding down, we wanted to get this last trip in before we have to leave Connecticut for our drive back to Phoenix. We leave two weeks from next Monday which is September 10th. We will drive to Nashville where my sister has purchased tickets for us all to go to the Grand Ol' Oprey on September 15th. We are discussing a side trip to Branson Missouri but once we get that close to home, Sally may want to head back to Phoenix to see our two Grand-daughters. That's been the hardest part of the summer for Sally as she has really missed the girls terribly. When we left we told them that when school started again, it wouldn't be ... read more

Okay I am a planner always have been always will be....my mind is constantly packing and doing the what if game....and why do I do this.... because soon the unthinkable and unfortunate will happen and one must be ready. In the plan, Kevin was to mow the lawn before we go... which he did do... however Kevin tends to sneeze when he mows and subsequently has blown his fake front tooth out of his mouth. We spent over an hour sweating in the cut grass looking for the little buggger but to no avail. The tooth may or may not be ready Monday morning (dentist kind enough to bring new impression straight to the lab). We leave Monday afternoon.... worst case Kevin looks like a hillbilly and doesn't smile for any pictures until we can get ... read more

I had come in from Montréal, QC by greyhound bus on an 8 hour overnight trip and arrived at the Boston south station in pooring rain. The forecast didn't look promising; For that Monday till Wednesday that I had my rental car booked for it was supposed to be cloudy and raining :( I took the T (silver line) to Logan airport, and hauled my bags to the rental car desk where I was told to deposit myself in the free bus that would take me to the parking lot. Upon arrival, I was first asked if I wouldn't want to consider changing my choice of car and my attention was pointed at a supersized, bling-bling, American style, tjizzle-my-nizzle-on-the-televizzle-kinda car that would fit in a driveway in LA... I kindly refused and kept my European sized vehicle ... read more

So we are 10 days away from our English-Irish adventure and after typing a 3 page to do list, I am feeling a bit more under control. School ends on Tuesday... end of the year celebrations and basketball tournaments will keep us busy right up until the day before our flight! Per our friends and family requests, I am testing out a travel blog for our adventure. This will also serve as the family journal. The theme will be "I never knew...." Each day (okay most days) I hope to have the kids and Kevin and I try and answer that question.... doesn't have to be monumental just something we have learned. Everything I love about travel has more to do with how other people live and think than it does with seeing the sights. While ... read more
