The only reason I’m on Cape Cod is to relax before enduring the Kafkaesque Gehenna that is international travel. I hate to bore you, but Cape Cod is as delightful as everyone says it is. And though the comfort of my current lodging is unparalleled, I can’t really recommend it to any random wayfarer -- I'm couch surfing with some friends (thanks be to Dorria, Chris and Zoe). A few highlights of the Cape: Sundae School, a popular local ice cream shoppe that served me a bowl of flavor so exotic I can’t even remember what it wasWellfleet Bookstore & Restaurant, probably the best raw oysters I’ve ever had (admittedly, I’m not much a connoisseur of oysters -- but then again, oysters are often served to you swimming in their own urine, so who ... read more

FAREWELL TO EUROPE FOR NOW Koln was a city not to be missed. Originally founded by the Romans, it is one of the oldest towns in Germany. Koln has housed 12 Romanesque churches as well as the famous Gothic cathedral. We were fortunate to get the last MH site available at the Stellplatz on the Rhine in Koln and found the tram/underground station right across the street, so we were able to take a quick ride into Koln. As we emerged from the underground, as though by magic, there was the Dom immediately above us. Not only did we explore the Dom,but were able to find many buildings from the 'old town' with surprising historical stories. Whenever we're visiting cities with a lot to see, we take lunch, coffee, etc. and are able to soak up ... read more

9/18/11 - Sunday - Cape Cod We are still at Bay View in Bourne, MA. Shelby & Jack cooked breakfast of pancakes, bacon, eggs, and sausage. Later we went all the way out on Cape Cod to Provincetown, MA. We saw seals right next to shore and found two small starfish on the beach. Went to the Pilgrims Memorial which is 253 feet tall made of granite which makes it the tallest granite structure in the USA. Aleta's most delicious vegetable, chicken, beef soup and Jack's fried cornbread was for supper. ... read more

Friday 9/16/11 - Great sunny morning. Traveling to Bourne,MA today. We are going through New York and there are many State Troopers on the roads today. Reached Bay View RV Park, nice park with big lots. We are in site 266, with Jack and Barbara right next door. Relaxed until time to square dance at Cape Cod Twirlers. Had a good time, was all plus club. There were three callers there, Charlie Trapp, Mike - now lives in Tenn and knows Gene Aldridge, and a Kevin. After the dance we, Aleta and Shelby; went to McDonalds, got supper and took it back to the motorhome.... read more

Left out at 10:30am heading closer to Maine. Next stop is Bourne, MA on Cape Cod. Crossed into Delaware about 12:30pm and then into Pennsylvania. At Quakertown the temp has dropped to 63 degrees and is very cloudy. Stopped for the night in Matamoras at Tri-State RV Park. Not a very nice park, but only there for one night - $36.00. Had hamburger helper and salad at Jack & Barbara's tonight. Whop biscuits rounded out the meal.... read more

This morning I borrowed Mike's road bike and decided to explore the Shining Sea Bikeway, a 17km bike path along a disused railway which runs from Woods Hole to North Falmouth through some beautiful scenery. Unfortunately we couldn't get the seat to go down, so I just had to make do with stretching my legs a little bit with each pedal. This started out fine, but after 4hrs was getting a bit painful. In North Falmouth I decided to take a 5km detour off the path to Old Silver Beach. When I got there there were cars queuing for ages to get into the car park, so I very smugly cycled past. The beach was horribly crowded though, with barely enough room to sit, so after a quick Oreos ice cream I hopped back on my ... read more

Most horrific day of travelling so far. Luckily one of Judith's housemates drove me to the train station, so that saved me a trek, but from there: Train to NY Penn station Walk to Megabus station Bus to Providence, RI Walk to Greyhound bus station Bus to Peter Pan Bus station Bus to Bourne, MA Bus to Woods Hole, Cape Cod I can safely say that American public transport is the worst I've ever been on! Also, all the bus stations were pretty shady. I soon realised in Providence that only the homeless people go indoors - everyone else sits outside in the rain. Anyway, I eventually reached Cape Cod and was met by my next host, Mike Bennet. Mike is a neuroscience professor who works partly at one of the marine institutes in Woods Hole, ... read more

... read more
