Well today was my last day of work. I really just wanted this week to be over as soon as possible. The anticipation for today had been building for a few weeks now as I gave my work 5 weeks notice to help in the transition time. Unfortunately as of writing this, they still do not have anyone to replace me. That worries me some because my team has been through a lot this past couple years. But they are a good group and will get through it. They also took me out to a great dinner. It was great to see everyone there. Thank you everyone! I appreciate all the gifts and everything you have done to support me this past year. So not I am, down to 40 something days before I head ... read more

Have downloaded some pictures so will enter those today. Raining today so will spend the time wandering the streets of Bar Harbor. Plan to extend at park campground for 2 additional days hoping to get some kakyaking and more bicycling in before we head north. Have been using laundromats along the way as needed, but David planned on us being able to be self-sufficient. Love watching him use the hand operated wringer devise he bought for the trip.... read more

Mapping in Maine So, I was dispatched by my company to rural Maine where I am supposed to be working on making maps for rural Georgia (makes alot of sense, eh?). It was a rollicking good time for sure. Since the town I was in (Wilton) was so small that it didn't have any hotel, etc, I was lodging with the guy who we contracted to make the maps. He had an awesome house and was very nice. My only complaint was that they were quasi-vegetarians, so the food was a bit scarce for me. Still, it was nice; although, I must say the best time was riding the bus from Lewiston to Portland. Aboard, I had the pleasure of sitting behind a sad old man who weighed about 350 lbs and (I think) was coughing ... read more

We arrived at Acadia/Bar Harbor on Saturday and got settled in at the campground. Beautiful area. Haven't downloaded pictures onto computer yet, but will send photos when we do. We are staying in a National Park Campground so no services, but located at the very tip of the island. Our camping spot is less than 1/2 mile from the ocean shoreline. Very few campers out this early - only 3 other campers in the park we are in. Things aren't as primitive as it sounds since we do have propane and battery so we have water, cooking, etc. We made an overnight stop in Freeport, ME before coming here and boy was it cold. So cold we spent a morning shopping at the LL Bean Flagship store for warmer clothing. Since then it has warmed up. ... read more

Welcome to my blog! I have really struggled with what to write for my first post. The biggest thing on my mind lately is the fact that in a little more then a week I will no longer be working at my job. For a little more then seven years I have pretty much given everything I have to work. That is my mentality. For me it is all or nothing, there can be no middle ground. Now I am walking away from that. That is tough. There is some guilt. I am a bit unsure. I am questioning my decision, as I think anyone in my position should do. I am walking away from a lot. But, I also know I have made the right one. I have chose to walk down a new path. ... read more

I must give much thanks to my Uncle Chuck for housing me at his 1885 Andover, MA farmhouse. The rain drizzled down for three days and I was grateful for having a warm dry place to stay. I returned my rental car in the morning after stopping at the post office then rode the bike back to the house in the drizzly rain. I mostly spent my time on the internet catching up with blogs or looking through my uncle’s massive collection of books. He showed me all about the reconstruction work he was doing on the house; refabricating, residing, scraping, and painting. So much work to do and it really shows, a beautiful old house. Thanks so much for the long weekend of rest! I left Andover in the morning of the third day as ... read more

Well, it has been a very busy and hectic May but I have been able to escape the land of Sargent Center twice for a few weekends away. Yipeee! My first outing was a white water rafting trip to the Forks, Maine. This was my second time rafting here and it was totally awesome. The only downside was that when we arrived there was still snow on our campsite and the water temperature was 35 degrees. The weather had been so bad that this meant that we were unable to raft the Dead river on Saturday as the road to get there still had 4 feet of snow and was not passable in a normal vehicle. This meant that we rafted the Kennebec river twice. I decided to go in the front of the raft ... read more

Advisory: please take care in reading trail maps and trail markers if and when you ever visit Monhegan Island. Otherwise you just might end up lost, and on an island where the year round population is only 75, there aren't a lot of places to stop and ask for directions to get back to your ferry on time. On the other hand, if you don't mind the risk (or if you have no choice), it may just be a blessing in disguise. When Keith and I deboarded our boat and grabbed a quick coffee at the cafe on the dock, we decided to head to up to the lighthouse and then take a trail to Pebble Beach on the northern end of the island; however, somehow, we ended up on a trail that was surely not ... read more
