Day Negative 2 Weather is calm. Not a cloud in the sky, or as far as I (Elena) can see from the computer lab window. Supplies. We need some. Specifically a water bottle, jam and maple syrup (for gifts, we don't just enjoy these things). Besides that though, we're set to go. Yay Peru! Elena and Tom... read more

Days to Departure: 1. Amount of stuff I still have to do before I leave: Infinite. Anywho, I'm putting together this site to act as a compilation of my experiences traveling and studying abroad in Belize. This is my last year at the University of Vermont, and amazingly enough, I still have the opportunity to study abroad, despite pending graduation. Perhaps this will provide me some insight as to what comes next, as I've been quite satisfied with life as a student. One can only hope. Right now, I'm sitting around in dismal midcoast Maine, and finding it difficult to prepare for days where it will be 85 and sunny as opposed to the fabulous freezing rain were experiencing at the moment. Here's to catching that 530 am plane... ... read more

Before I begin this journal entry, I would like to apologize for the long delay in postings, there has been a lot of stress and business preparing for my Masters Comprehensive Exams (which I took earlier this week and will have a post about later on) and I have a lot of things to post to catch up with lost time. If you are subscribed I apologize, but you may get a dumping of update e-mails, don't worry the torential postings will stop soon enough! This is a tale about the fickle balance of friends/family and the stress of studing for my comprehensive exams all over Christmas break. There isn't much to say, except that as is always the case it's extremely nice to have dinner and spend the holidays with my extended family. Here is ... read more

We’ve been asked by many of you to keep you abreast of our activities during our year away from Andover and we will do our best to bring you along on our fall days in downeast Maine, then on our journey across the U.S. to winter in Tucson and back again. It’s all about time. Our sabbatical officially started in September, and we delighted in making new use of the customary school days by visiting parts of Maine and New England we'd never had time to before: Camden (for a Maine Fare food festival), Monhegan (a spectacular coastal Maine island), Searsport (Penobscot Maritime Museum), Brooklin (annual schooner “sail-in” at the Wooden Boat School), Roque Bluffs (beautiful sand beach in downeast Maine), and the Kangamangas Trail (across New Hampshire). With the extra time we also worked on ... read more

If you haven't seen that episode of the simpsons that title will probably make nooooooooo sense. Anyhoo, onto my thanksgiving break! At UVM we get a week off over thanksgiving, which is cool. For most of the break I went to a place just outside of Portland (the capital of Maine) callled Yarmouth. I travelled to Maine by Greyhound bus, because there is a terminal in Burlington which makes it really easy. Though driving straight to Yarmouth from Burlington should take about 4 hours, my bus ride took 8. This, I discovered, was because the bus went down to Boston before travelling up to Maine. But I didn't mind the time because there was cool stuff to look at outside the window. And I had a two seats to myself, so double the coolness. When the ... read more

The cloudless skies returned today and with very clear viability we had a magnificent time introducing ourselves to the Acadia National Park. The park was denoted to the nation by several rich families including the Rockefellers. It has a glaciated coastline including one of only two fiords on the east coast of America and several hills of over 1000’ with bare granite summits poking through the trees. The autumn tree colours were probably the best we have seen on the trip. In the morning we took a ferry trip which visited two of the outlying islands both of which seem to be millionaire hideaways. The views of the Mount Desert Island hills were great. The afternoon was spent driving around a loop road in the park guided by an audio cd, which made an amazingly scenic, ... read more

We spent a rather unpleasant day driving 200 miles through Maine in continuous rain from Bethel in the west to the Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island on the Atlantic coast. We are staying in a very pleasant bed and breakfast house in Southwest harbour. Fortunately the weather cleared in the evening and we able to take a pleasant walk along the coast by Bar Harbour, the largest town on the island. For dinner, I achieved a first. Under close instruction from the restaurant owner I managed to consume a local lobster. It was delicious. ... read more

On another dull day which was also fairly cold, windy and at times wet we explored the North East of the White Mountains. The area is dominated by Mount Washington, at 6288’ it is the highest mountain in North East USA. Being exposed it tends to have severe weather conditions. We first went to look at the bottom station of the cog railway that runs up Mount Washington. This was followed by a walk from Crawford Notch, one of the passes through the mountains to Mount Willard. The view from the summit gave us excellent views down the pass, but we were once again disappointed at the lack of colour in the trees. Our final expedition was to drive up the road leading up Mount Washington. The notice at the tollbooth at the bottom informed us ... read more

After an uneventful crossing of the border from Canada to the US we made our way to Bar Harbor, Maine. Bar Harbor is a quaint town with plenty of little shops and restaurants. We didn't stay as long as we should have so there isn't that much to describe. However, the next day we went to Acadia national park and spent some time there. We woke up to a typical fall Maine day, drizzling rain and plentiful fog. As we clibed the road in the park, the visibility became so bad that we weren't able to enjoy fully what the park has to offer. In particular the fall foliage that already was wonderful in foggy conditions, would have been breathtaking on a sunny day. We saw several waterfalls and sweeping views of the ocean.
