Today started the same as all days. I get up go down to the lobby and buy the morning coffee. For a Waldorf it is pretty amazing that they don’t have coffee service in the room, so daily coffee is an unplanned expense. At least it isn’t Starbucks. Not a great deal on the agenda for today, brunch some more antiques and ending the day with a Jazz club. Commander’s Palace Since it is Sunday that must mean Brunch. Our brunch choice was Commander’s Palace in the heart of the Garden District and across from Lafayette Cemetery. This is one of several restaurants owned by the Brennan family of New Orleans. I had brunch here over 20 years ago and it was very good, so am looking forward to the repeat trip. We took ... read more

I woke up and was out of bed at 8:30 but we still got a late start. The morning plan of Café Du Monde and St. louis Cathedral in Jackson Square were put on hold. While Jerry was getting ready, I finished the blog from the day before. When we finally left the room, our first stop was the Gumbo Shop for lunch. This is a pretty popular place with both locals and tourists. There was a bit of line (actually the line was nonstop and still going strong when we were done with our lunch) but it moved quickly. Fortunately, we got a table inside because it was another hot and sticky day. We had a pretty traditional Creole/Cajun meal. Probably more Creole than Cajun. We both had Ice Tea to cool off, and the ... read more

Today did not begin until lunch. This was planned. After 15 years of traveling together we have discovered that the day after you arrive, you need to work into the experience. In other words, let yourself sleep in. Sleeping in for me lately means 8:30 as opposed to 6:00. Jerry is the better sleep in person. The schedule was not jam packed. Lunch in the Garden District, then The French Market in the French Quarter with a stop at the 1850 House. The day would end with Dinner at Antoine’s (celebrating its 175th year). Clang, Clang went the trolley, The St. Charles Street line was the mode of transportation to and from lunch. We stopped at Walgreens and got our 3-day Jazzy pass, unlimited transportation for 3 days. The line starts and ends one block from ... read more

We have gone a lot of places this year, mostly on the eastern seaboard, but this is the first real vacation of the year and the only trip to get its own blog post. Since a trip abroad was not in the budget this year, we choose New Orleans, the closest thing we can get to France in the United States. This is also our 10thanniversary trip. Ten years since our wedding, 15 years together. This trip also marks the first long vacation that Tarragon will be joining us. As usual, travel day is not much to blog about. Typical cab to Penn Station, NJ transit to Newark airport and flight to New Orleans. Well it was not totally typical, as this was the first flight for Tarragon. It pretty much went very smoothly, took a ... read more

We just touched upon Monroeville at the end of our last blog. To back track a little, and not wishing to patronise any of our readers, Monroeville was the home of Nelle Harper Lee famous for the writing of To Kill A Mockingbird, which is absolutely Pip's favourite book of all time ( as a further note, Paul got Pip a reissue copy, signed by NHL for her 50th birthday). Regrettably NHL died last year but Monroeville, which was the setting for the fictional town of Maycombe from TKAMB, was as almost a must-see for this trip as the eclipse. Without the NHL / TKAMB link it would be fair to say that Monroeville would not be on the tourist trail. Lots of obvious poverty in the town and its outskirts, trailer homes, run down shacks. ... read more

We left New Orleans on Wednesday on a two day schlep up to Memphis. Around NO (and of course all through The South) there are old plantations and plantation mansions galore, many of which are open to the public. From what we could see most of these focus on the 'grand mansion', plantation owners, southern gals etc. We wanted our focus to be more on those whose work made all those people wealthy - the plantation slaves. We had seen little reference in NO to slavery, and searching for 'slavery tours' on Google bought up surprisingly little, with the exception of the Whitney Plantation. Here the focus was very much on looking at plantations and plantation life from the view of the slaves. The founder, Ambroise Heidel emigrated from Germany, but changed his name to Heydal ... read more

Here we are, finally in New Orleans. I know, you haven't visit the world if you have not come to New Orleans. The Hurricane season is already on from 1st of august. So the big question was, are we going to be dry, wet, or completely underwater for our two nights here. Well, we were on the lucky side, you've read what has happened with Harvey the last few days. Not sure how wet New Orleans did end up, but in the news while visiting the city, the first thing was how many of the turbines to pump the water out in case of hurricane, was simply not in working condition! We stay mainly on the Interstate from Dallas to New Orleans, going via Lafayette at the end to have some more entertainment while driving. We ... read more

Last day of the festival and the day we check-out. Of course it is the first morning that I sleep until 8am. Breakfast, showers, packing it is a whirlwind. We remembered to say goodbye to Liz, the breakfast lady, and I thanked Jeannette at the front desk for all of her help. I get the ladies suitcases and my own things on out to the van and at 10am drive over to the other hotel to pick up Tyler. Luckily Milliken has decided to source his own transportation to the airport so that saves an hour or so of my day. Milliken has already headed out to the casino to try and recoup his losses or to the fest. Not sure and we don't see him for the rest of the day. Tossing Tyler's bag in ... read more

Abs and I were up early again. After Caroline awoke, I got the car from valet and zipped over to pre-check in Joe, Caroline's cousin. Joe and his son Ryan were coming in from Florida to spend the day with us and would leave on Sunday morning. After getting him squared away I found Tyler at breakfast and warned him that Joe may need to stash his bag in Tyler and Milliken's room if his room was not ready when he arrived. Tyler was cool with that and told me that he had lost his folding chair the previous night, left it outside a port a john. Bummer. Then I was back to my hotel to help Caroline and Abcde get ready for the day. Caroline, Abcde and I headed off to Jackson Square sans Vallery ... read more

And history repeats itself. Abcde and I are up early and head downstairs for coffee. I like Hampton Inn's Robust Blend and Abs drinks the decaf at room temp, both of us like it black and bitter. As we sit and watch the news we find President Trump had bombed Syrian airfields in response to Syrians poisoning other Syrians with chemical weapons. At least Trump did what Hillary said he should do? So both Democrats AND Republicans can be happy about bombing a third world country into the 4 dimension? But I digress, this travelogue is about the French Quarter Festival, the greatest free festival ever!
