We got up early on the 4th as there was a particularly low railway bridge that we had to clear and the Captain wasn’t sure if we could make it or not. It was just daylight as we approached the bridge. A towboat ahead of us just cleared it so we thought crikey, I’m sure we’re taller than them. A man was sent up the foremast to do a sight line as we slowed to a crawl. The stacks were lowered as was the Pilot House. The Captain and the two pilots were on the flying bridge and made the call to proceed, fingers crossed I think. All trip we had been told about these low bridges and how last flood they made it by one or two inches. Well this time we were a couple ... read more

Geo: 37.0857, -88.5959Today was another travel day. We left Topeka at 8:15 and 70 degrees and headed east once again. The drive took us across the rest of Kansas, and Kansas City (Sharon I was thinking about you), through the lower part of Illinois, and into Kentucky. We crossed the Mississippi River in St. Louis when we crossed into Illinois, and a few miles later, the Ohio River, when we crossed from Illinois into Kentucky. The Ohio River continues a short distance further before it dumps into the Mississippi. We landed in Paducah, KY for the night at one of our favorite hotel chains, the Drury. Beamer was quite bored for the second day in a row. He slept all day yesterday, stood guard duty all night and slept all day again today. I guess we ... read more

KIRCHHOFF'S Bakery & Deli is located on Second Street just across the street from the Old Market House in downtown Paducah. The bakery started business in 1973 and after a great many years closed. It was reopened as a deli and restaurant in 1997 by a fifth generation of the family. Today it serves breakfast and lunch along with a number of baked items such as breads and cookies. The building is in a quaint section of downtown with brick streets and shade tress along the way. Parking is in front on in a city owned lot about 100 yards away. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday 7-5 and closed on sunday.... read more

The Columbia Theater in downtown Paducah, Kentucky has been closed for many years. The building located between 6th and 5th Streets on Broadway is in bad need of repairs. Recently pictures were taken of the inside of what was once the most magnificent movie theater in Western Kentuckcy. It was the largest in Paducah and was one of four downtown theaters in the 1950s and 1960s.The top first run movies of the time were always shown at the Columbia. Time is quickly passing for anyone to renovate as most downtown business have moved to the suburbs and there has been a new performing arts center constructed in downtown.... read more

Since I published a section on Paducah, Kentucky sometime ago I have acquired some additional photos and am updating the info. Paducah has just escaped the recent flooding along the Ohio and Mississippi due mainly to the flood wall which was built after the 1937 flood which took a toll on the city. The downtown are of Paducah has some retail including several restaurants however most of the old retail industry has moved to the mall area just off Interstate 24. Numerous attempts to resurrect downtown Paducah has been undertaken in past years. The addition of the Carson Performing Arts Center a few years go has certainly improved the area around second and Kentucky Avenue, an area that formally had old warehouses, etc. The Center brings in shows and other productions throughout the year thus if ... read more

Oct 10, 2009 Day 1 - Just want to let everyone know we are actually on our way. Left Baraboo the first time at 6:30 AM this morning. When Wayne realized he forgot some of his cloths on a hanger we turned around and went back. We should have checked that list one more time before we left. We departed for the second time at 6:50 AM. It’s time we get South. The temperature was 29 degrees F when we left. We had a smooth uneventful trip and arrived in Paducah, Kentucky at 6:00PM. The temperature is 62 but is suppose to get down to 45 tonight. We found a very nice motel for $49 for the night. And that includes breakfast. We had dinner at the Texas Roadhouse. We made reservations to launch Amber Lee ... read more

This is my first post so hope I don't screw it up too badly. Paducah is a small town located on the Ohio River in Western Kentucky. The population is now around 25000 as many people have left for the surrounding suburbs. When I lived ibn Paducah and where I graduated from high school there were several thousand more residents. The downtown area of Paducah used to be a thriving retail area in the 1950s and 1960s however with the edition oif a large mall west of town the area began to see many store closings over the next few decades and now while there are some preservation efforts underway the downtown area is not one for shopping. There is a very nice downtown arts center theater which occasionally has some name stars appear. This has ... read more

Bear with me this is the first log entry so I will take some time and write a little more than I might otherwise put in the first day's trip record. I am also learning to add photos so there are more than might be necessary for this first entry. I will work on using formatting later. Today was mostly about getting started and taking advantage of an opportuntiy to visit with family. BJ, our Miniature Schnauzer, was sure she was going to travel with us so she arranged herself in the front seat while I loaded everything. She will be staying at home this trip. We stopped for lunch in Chattanooga with Mom, Dad, Cathy and, Beth. The weather was great and traffic was easy except for a brief slurge of rush hour stuff in ... read more
