We are back on the road again! After church today we drove from Colorado Springs to Greensburg, Kansas. We decided to avoid the interstate and planned our route out through eastern Colorado and into Kansas so we could see the landscape. As the mountains disappeared behind us, we passed ranches and farms watching the land change from browns and yellows to greens. We stopped for lunch in Lamar; the visitor's center was housed in the old railroad station, once part of the old Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe rail line. We spent the night in Greensburg, Kansas, a town that suffered a devastating tornado in 2007. Since then they rebuilt many of the buildings downtown incorporating green technologies.... read more

I've gotten this idea over the past few weeks that when I get out of college I want to travel around the world. I'm not really sure how to make that happen, but where there's a will, there's a way, as the saying goes. I did the same thing on a smaller scale when I graduated high school. I went to high school in South Carolina. My family was pretty poor, so the only vacations I took was to the exotic lands of Greenville SC and Charleston. I wanted to get out and see the country to experience things from other perspectives, so I hopped on a greyhound and moved around for two years, spending a few weeks in new locations and working odd jobs to pay for hotel rooms, food, and money to get to ... read more

This will be short. I am truly camping with no electrical power. My phone has limited battery. Today I got on the bike very early and plowed into the usual strong headwinds. I had lunch at the Dighton Diner with several of the Adventure Cycling Group. Nobody seemed to know that this diner existed, so it was a real treat for us all. The server Nancy was very nice and bent over backwards to make everyone happy. Once lunch was complete, we all got on the bikes and realized the wind had settled down to a light breeze and I flew to Scott City. Although I had intended to spend the night there, I just could not stop when the winds were so favorable. So instead I hooked up with a young fellow named Conner and ... read more

After I posted my blog today. I left my comfortable air conditioned room, ( another flea bag motel, but quite frankly I don’t know how to put up a tent in 25mph winds,) and walked down the street looking for food. While on my way, I dodged a huge tumble weed and it suddenly struck me. This reminds me of one of those old Clint Eastwood movies when he rides into town with the wind blowing fiercely and nobody is there. Exactly the same except there are a few trucks instead of horses. I found a Mexican Restaurant and was the only one there although admittedly it is a bit early. The inside was actually quite uplifting but the food was pretty mundane. There you have an exciting evening in Ness City Kansas.... read more

In my last article, I teased this one a little bit by saying that I wanted to write about possible trends in traveling over the next year or two. To tell you the truth, I don't even know if trends is the correct word. Maybe observations? Hopes? Who knows. It's my responsibility to write, and yours to judge. The problem arose that there's only one trend that made me want to write this. So what should I title this article/blog? Whatever title you read, I promise that I didn't put it in the box until the very end. A little insight into the writer's mind for a moment: we get too cute for our own good sometimes. I'm about to spend half of this article discussing the marketing genius of a cartoon mouse, and the second ... read more

Kansas is a big State. I have been riding in Kansas now for seven days and I have three more to go. They cannot come fast enough! I have been looking at grasslands, farms, silo’s and barns without much else to see. I won’t be showing a lot of new pictures for two reasons. 1. You have seen it all the last few days. 2. The wind is blowing so darn hard, it is a real chore to get off and on the bike. Every time a truck passes, I fight to stay on the road. As a matter of fact I got blown off the road twice today! I decided I do prefer riding West because at least the wind is blowing me off the road instead of into traffic as it would be if ... read more

I'm a history nerd. It was my major in college and obsession as a kid. I don't believe in the idea that "history repeats itself." It's an assertion that implies that things are meant to be. Nothing that has ever happened HAD to. There didn't have to be a World War 2. The Roman Empire didn't have to exist. British imperialism wasn't "destined to fail." Things happen because people are independent and make decisions based off of their needs and desires. History is unpredictable because history is the study of people, not events. Thus the reason I love history: it's people-centric. Studying people and their motivations interest me. The same holds true when I travel. I look at a place's historical significance and the people when I go somewhere. I want to know where the people ... read more

Similar to the last few days, I was on the road at Sunrise to try and beat the wind and heat. I managed to do that for the first half of the ride but about 8:30 am the winds started back up and I fought a 20 knot crosswind for the remainder of the day. Yesterday it seemed that the geography had changed to more sheltered roads but today was a regression back to grasslands. There was nothing but wide open space and one could see for miles down the road. The ride stayed on the same highway for 48 miles. It was flat as could be all the way to Larned, Kansas Larned, began when the Santa Fe Trail was active in the early 19th Century. Fort Larned was built here to provide shelter and ... read more

Early to rise and early on the bike seems to be a good formula. I was on the road at Sunrise and it turned out to be a good day. I think I even had a bit of a tailwind today. The topography helped a lot too. After Newton, the Great Plains has been left behind and it is more farmland with TREES! I could have been in Central California, Iowa or Western Kentucky. Lots of crops, corn, spinach, and tobacco I think. Beautiful big farms with huge barns. Farm equipment and storage facilities were abundant. I stopped in Nickerson for lunch and was amazed that Main Street was brick! I haven’t seen that at all since I left Yorktown. One glitch today; somehow I missed a turn and rode about 5 miles on a dirt road. ... read more

Today was a scheduled day off and I was glad to have it. Once again a little rest allowed the magic of healing to happen and I feel completely rested and anxious to be on my way! I did do a very easy ride a couple of miles to see the Newton Bike Shop, which was made famous in the Netflix movie, “Inspire to Ride”. ( If you want to see some really crazy people ride the Trans America Bicycle Race this would be a good movie to watch.) Newton Bike Shop has really capitalized on that reputation and the walls are covered with signed Jerseys of every winner since the race began several years ago. (Incidentally, the race is going on right now and Bruce and I saw several of them go by last week.) ... read more
