As it was while travelling from Rockton IL to Dubuque IA, my drive from Mud Lake Park in Dubuque to Clarks Ferry Campground near Davenport IA was in the raindrops – not heavy rain, but heavy enough to use the intermittent mode on my windshield wipers for most of the drive. Clarks Ferry is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility located on the western bank of the Mississippi River and was the site of a ferry that operated between the Iowa and Illinois shores in the early 1800's. The facility is actually located in Montpelier IA, about 6-8 miles south of Davenport. Jumping ahead a bit, the weather I had during my two-week stay was pleasant for the most part, but the weather in the northern Great Plains, particularly before but also during this period, ... read more

Greetings from Iowa! Yesterday we visited US Adventure RV in Davenport, Iowa. They were awesome! They got our coach in and fixed the slide issue so we could move on to our destination at the KOA Des Moines West. While we waited we toured a 45 ft, 2017 Winnebago Grand Tour. Heated floors, two bathrooms, king sized bed and 3 TVs, were just a few of the amenities! OMG! As we now know, KOA campgrounds are awesome! We have a short drive to Lincoln, Nebraska today, so we made the breakfast of champions- according to Marc! Many firsts for Joyce too! I awakened on September 7, 2016 and immediately began humming my country version of an uncountry song, “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Roof!” The rain continued while I had my morning coffee. I tore down in the rain. I drove in the rain. The drone of the windshield wipers was not really aggravating; it was more hypnotic. I was glad the drive to Mud Lake Park in Dubuque IA from Hononegah Forest Preserve in Rockton IL was only a little over 2 hours. Fortunately, as I reached the outskirts of Dubuque the rain diminished and then quit. Except for a few soggy spots in the grass where the rainwater had pooled, set-up went without a hitch. My wet feet and I set in for a catch-up session on the trusty old computer with all its nooks ... read more

Our adventure started from Malta at 10:30 this morning. We travelled across northern Illinois and central Iowa with our destination for tonight being Blair, Nebraska. That will make 560 miles for Tim & Carolyn. Our lunch stop and first selfie was at Machine Shed in Davenport, IA. Plan to get off the interstate onto a more scenic route tomorrow as we head to Badlands National Park, the first park on our adventure.... read more

It's a pity Robert Kincaid never existed and that he didn't write any National Geographic article When we arrived in O'Hare airport we passed the immigrations. The conversation we had with the officer there went something like this. Officer (in a businesslike voice): "Welcome. What is the reason for you visiting USA?" Us (in a happy voice): "Tourism." Officer (in a slightly bored voice): "What are your plans?" Us (in an excited voice): "We are going to rent a car and go on a road trip in Iowa" Officer (in a very puzzled voice): "Why on earth would you want to go on a road trip in Iowa? What are you going to see there?" Us (in very excited voices): "We are going to see the Bridges of Madison County, the famous ones, from the movie." ... read more

Corn, the Day the Music Died, Star Trek and more Corn Last summer we had to make a large renovation in our home. This made our lives a bit unpredictable for a few months. This chaotic living condition made it difficult for us to plan our vacation as far ahead as we normally do. This is part of the reason why we decided to split our vacation into two parts. First half we went where we found tickets namely Chicago in the US. However 14 days for Chicago seemed a bit too much so we went on a road trip in Iowa instead. We knew very little about Iowa before we set off. They grow corn and they have tornadoes, that was pretty much all we knew. We could not even get our hands on any ... read more

Photos from various places in Iowa, Illinois and possibly Wisconsin When we started this blog 10 years ago (Happy Birthday Ake's and Emma's Blog!) the main purpose was to make it possible for us to publish our photos. We also try to add some stories, possibly an anecdote or two and write a bit about the places we visit. Hopefully we do it so good that we once in a while also manage to inspire people to visit the places we have been to. But what is most important to us is that we wish to let friends, relatives and anyone else who might be interested see the pictures we take. Last summer we were in the US for a while. When we now finally have managed to sit down and sort out the photos we ... read more

Marcia and I are on the road to Montana trying to see as much of the country as we can. The interstate from Marcia's mom's place in West Lafayette, Ind. took us north through miles and miles of wind farms, energy of the future! Immediately we changed our plans when we realized how close we were going to Donovan, Illinois and Snowcrest farm where Marcia grew up. We visited the high school (much smaller than she remembers) and the place where she spent the first 18 years of her life (also returning during the summers of college). The family there was for over 30 years and we enjoyed a visit with the folks that now own it. From there we headed to Iowa, destination Dyersville. More on that later. But first, in the spirit of getting ... read more
