Pikes Peak State Park, MacGregor, IA ‘What?’, you say! Pikes Peak is in Colorado, not Iowa! So how can they be at Pikes Peak in Iowa? Good question. But here we are. Turns out that the same dude, Zebulon Pike, the first European to describe the singular peak on Colorado’s front range, also discovered this spot on the Mississippi River. And it is called a ‘peak’ here because it is the tallest bluff on the Mississippi River, around 500 feet above the river surface. Maybe not quite as tall as the mountains in Colorado, but impressive anyway. We didn’t have time yesterday to get pictures from the top, but we are going to be here a little while, so we’ll post them later. It is a State Park and we are camping here for a few ... read more

Rodeo City Park, Fort Madison, IA We are getting used to breaking camp, hitching up, and driving through the rain. So we knew what to do yesterday when we woke up and it was raining cats and dogs. But even with all the practice, I can’t say that I like it - its hard work and unpleasant. The reward, of course, is that you get to move on. And by the end of the day, after a long 330 miles pretty much straight across southern Iowa, we finally saw patches of blue. Although the rain varied from spells of intense downpours to periods of just dark skies, it was chilly outside and damp. Us westerners aren’t used to all this wet cold. We left Beatrice due east to Auburn and then headed north to Nebraska City ... read more

Tonight we are camped at the Pottawattamie County fairgrounds in the small town of Avoca, Iowa. There are only two other campers here. At $20 for a full hookup site its a bargain. Avoca is on the far western side of Iowa, close to the Nebraska border. Traffic was surprisingly heavy all the way across the state on I-80, with many trucks. Iowa is definitely not as flat as one would think, mostly a rolling terrain with huge farm fields. The crops were almost all corn and soybeans, I would say about a 75/25 ratio. After we set up camp we visited a nearby county park where they had a herd of bison and a herd of elk in a large fenced in enclosure. Then we followed a tip and had dinner at a local restaurant, ... read more

Today we got past Chicago and crossed the Mississippi River into Iowa. We are camped in a nicely kept county park near Davenport. We didn't have any reservations and since this is a Friday afternoon we stopped a little early to make sure we could get a spot. We took the Honda down to a park along the Mississippi River. There was a number of people fishing from the bank and some type of kayaking event just getting underway by a women's outdoors club. I included a few pictures. Now that we are west of the Mississippi I think the countryside will start to get more interesting. In the meantime I'm just glad to be camping and exploring new places. Our friends John and Linda, who were planning to make this trip with us, had to ... read more

After our pit stop at the Reagan house, we drove on until lunch time. We were approaching the Mississippi, and so I suggested we stop on the river to see if there was a place for lunch where the kids might see the Mississippi River. We crossed over the bridge into Clinton, Iowa, and then I followed the signs to the River Front District. There was a Fourth of July celebration going on! The road was blocked off for a parade, and there were bouncy castles out. We managed to score a parking space, and we walked to the one restaurant I could see from where we parked: The Candlelight Inn. It was located right on the river, and we ate outside with a view. They had signs that boasted their town was home to the ... read more

Well it is time for the next installment of our vacation adventures. We are travelling with our family to Paris, London, and Wales over the next two weeks - and are looking forward to the sight seeing and the adventures we always have travelling. Our first stop is Paris where we will spend 3 days. From there we will take the "Chunnel" to London and sight see there for 3 days. At the end of the first week, we go to Wales and pick up a canal boat and will spend the second week touring the canals in Wales. We are in Chicago, waiting for our plane to Philedelphia. Connie has already located the child she most wants to sit beside. The other good news is that both flights are totally full! So far, so good ... read more

After an early wake up and final check of all needed items, we were on our way to Diane and John's for our Limo pickup to Boston's Logan Airport. Traffic was light so we arrived in plenty of time. After checking our bags in at curbside, and waiting for the others to do so, Ray happens to look at the boarding passes and noted that we had been upgraded to 1st class. Sounded great till he realized that the destination was now Orlando, Fl and his name was Mohammed something or other. As our bags had already disappeared down the conveyer belt, concern crept in rapidly. Luckily the bags were correctly sent to MSP and just the boarding passes were incorrect. I can only imagine not finding this out till we were ready to board. I ... read more

And so the Adventure begins. After a video on how and what traveling is like on an RV, we took off. Must've met I didn't pay much attention about hoses, etc., since I had no intention of dealing with them! However, I had to learn where to stand and the "special" hand signals I had to use when Q had to back up or he needed to "balance" the RV. The other thing, even more importantly, I found out is that there is NO hairdryer (add that to Walmart list). Finally, we are off and saying the ride was boring is an understatement! I had to entertain myself with reading highway signs and there were not too many of them as my pictures will show: South Dakota sign, at least three signs for Wall Drug, and ... read more

We made it! And, I trust we are all tucked in for the night by now in our spiffy new "Minnie Winnie's".This will be short and sweet as it's been a long day. Dorrie & I flew into Minneapolis from Naples on Thursday and met up with Tom & Peggy who had flown in the same day from Virginia. We met for dinner at City Grill at the Mall of America for a great meal. Al & Sue flew into Kansas a week earlier to attend a wedding and met up with us today in Iowa. Dorrie & I spent about 10 hours between yesterday and today visiting just about all 520 stores in the Mall of America and managed to ride one of the many roller coasters with Tom so that we could impress upon ... read more
