One of the great opportunities available as working for Hanitat for Humanity involves getting to go on Global Village trips. I previously traveled to El Salavador for a week build. This summer my trip will take me to Malawi, a small African country. Representing the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, I will join people from the Wake County Habitat for Humanity in building homes for families impacted by HIV and AIDS. I will post updates as able during the trip. ... read more

Description provided by Habitat for Humanity: Malawi is a country of immense beauty, yet also of extreme poverty. The country is rated as one of the least developed countries in the world. 90 percent of its population lives in rural areas. The economy is predominately agricultural and is dependent on substantial international assistance. Because of the widespread poverty, four out of five families live in substandard homes, with little hope of ever being able to afford a decent house. A typical village hut is built of mud and daub with a dirt floor and thatched roof and requires frequent repair. The conditions put families at high risk of all kinds of diseases, with leaky roofs making the house damp and mud floors attracting insects. The number of orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi has increased from ... read more

Pretrip (Friday the 13th...) We're on our way to our Alaskan Adventure! Tom and Sally came this morning and we loaded the van and went to Sister's Cafe for lunch. We headed west to Iowa where we will pick up the RVs in Forest City. In Waterloo, we went past the Grout Museum and the John Deere Tractor and Engine Museum! We crossed Buddy Holly Dr in Clear Lake and had a moment of silence. Tom and Sally have FL friends in Forest City (pop. 4600) -an amazing coincidence - who welcomed us with libations and snacks! We headed for Bill's, the local super market, to select the perishables that will sustain us for several days. On to the "Winnebago Wonderland"... Quite the place. An army of RVs awaited us with eager and confused travel ... read more

The resort and nature center at Honey Creek State Park offer free activities throughout the day, including hikes, ice fishing, campfire stories, and crafts. We signed up for the animal tracks and scat hike. It started at the nature center, so we hung out there for a bit and checked out some of the animals until it was time to set out for the guided hike. Our guide asked the kids what scat means. Oliver proudly declared that it's animal poop. The children were all fascinated with the rabbit scat that the guide spotted at the start of the hike, and they shrieked with horror when he told them rabbits eat their own poop to digest it twice. He then spotted a pellet on the ground that seemed to be made up of a partially digested ... read more

We heard about Honey Creek Resort from friends in Iowa who touted it as one of the best weekend destinations for families with kids. It's located on Rathbun Lake, and so there are a lot of outdoorsy activities to keep people occupied during the warmer months (fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, etc). In the winter, they offer amazing deals to attract people during the off-season. They have a small water park in the hotel, so you can sang a cheap getaway for a long weekend and let the kids go wild at the water park. That's actually why we went. We thought we'd get a weekend with the kids at a water park, which sounded fun enough. In actuality, we lucked out. Spring arrived this week, and temperatures jumped from the teens and 20s to the 50s ... read more

We got a bit of a late start on our drive to Rathbun Lake. The sun started to set about halfway through our drive. As we drove on winding, rural, unlit roads through bits of forest preserve, I worried about the driving conditions in the dark. We took the drive at a safe speed, which proved a wise choice when we passed a couple herds of deer. One herd started to cross in front of us! It was dark when we pulled into our hotel at Honey Creek. The stars and the moon were bright, which delighted the kids. This part of the state seems like a good place to head to for star-gazing!... read more

Now that I’m at the hotel, I can certainly say that I’m pretty glad that today is over. I guess the excitement from yesterday turned into a bit of a crash today. I’ve had a really hard time staying awake at times, but needless to say, I made it to my destination for the evening safely. The hotel I stayed at last night in Des Moines had little in the way of food, but I had wanted to try one of those breakfast pizzas at Casey’s, which Beth had told me about. My first stop after leaving the hotel was Casey’s for gas and breakfast. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any breakfast pizzas. Bummer. And while we’re talking about gas stations, I gotta say: Iowa, get it together. I get that you have corn in your gas, ... read more

Well, now that I've attended the 2nd of 2 TCU road games in a row, the ostensible reason for my Great Plains road trip is at an end. But that doesn't mean I intend to go directly back to Athens, GA (a.k.a. home). I'm planning on taking a circuitous route of sorts, so while I won't be in the Great Plains anymore, the road trip will continue a few more days. I saw the first familiar face in about 10 days this morning - Beth, a friend from my days of working summers at Camp Westminster, and who also attended McAfee School of Theology with me. She had seen my blog a few days back and asked whether we could work out to meet up since I would be coming to Iowa. I was happy to ... read more

7am start today to make ground East. Shouldn't be much to see for a while. A hard start to the day with strong crosswinds, grooved road surface with bumps so you bounced along the road, wet surface and more showers looming. I'm riding facing toward the wind, shoulder pushing into the prevailing direction, hand of the same side holding back handle and other hand pushing against the opposite bag for steadiness. We're leaning the bike to compensate for the crosswind so we need to pay attention if we go under a bridge or another form of shelter as the wind suddenly stops! Pressing on we hit an electrical storm complete with fork lightning and had our bike and gear washed for about half an hour. We decided at the point it may be a prudent idea ... read more

We had a great day today with 81 miles travelled and two more locks under our belt. It was warm and calm yet overcast. Lots of little fishing boats darting around but not much barge traffic except at one lock where we waited almost an hour. What made today a banner day was stopping for fuel, finding a place to stock up on beer and getting a real shower. We are now in Leclaire Iowa at yet our favourite; a free dock in a pretty little town. The trains scream by almost against it but hey, they are all along this great River. After a rolly night in thunderstorms last night, this will be heavenly. This is the home town of Buffalo Bill, what a find! Our rocky cliffs and lush rolling hills are now replaced ... read more
