Indiana Dunes State Park, Chesterton, IN Yesterday was a regrouping day. Partially it was a down day - we did get a nap in late in the day. And partially it was to gather information for the coming busy week. After a leisurely breakfast of bacon and eggs, we took a short walk with the girls part-way up the nature trail. One of the great things about walking our corgis is that everyone loves to stops, pet the dogs and chat. We learned from a local resident that the town of Valparaiso, just south of the park, had a delightful small town center of pubs, restaurants, and shops and we should check it out. Our goal today, though, was to bicycle down to the train station and get information about the fares and schedule. So we ... read more

After breakfast Jon Walker, new president of FMCA (Family Motor Coach Association) spoke about new initiatives and current benefits of belonging to the organization. Much of the day was unscheduled so I headed back into Shipshewana. Menno-Hof is a non-profit information center teaching about the life and faith of the Amish and Mennonites. Excellent information was presented through multi-media, historical environments, a tornado room, colorful displays, and informative guides who answered all my questions. After my tour I headed down the street to Yoders Department Store and Yoders Hardware Store - both totally packed with almost anything an Amish family (and me) could want. Horses with buggies were parked outside. On the way back to the campground I passed several RV and trailer factories plus an antique car show. Back home I grabbed cheese for lunch, ... read more

Baked oatmeal with maple syrup for breakfast... delicious. The caterers for the week have been great with a varied menu and lots of fruit and vegetables. Cool, dreary, on-and-off rain showers as Hurricane Irma made its final push north. The first morning session was presented by a fellow Roadtrekker who volunteers with his wife each spring at Manzanar National Historic Site in Southern California. Sab was seven in 1942 when his family was taken to this Japanese War Internment Camp. His presentation started with a video overview including voices presenting snippets of life in the camp and personal perspectives. He described his experiences as a young farm boy coming to the camp, how the community organized itself and began farming and producing whatever they needed. He stressed that there were many good stories in spite of ... read more

I woke up early this morning - cool day, moisture on the windows. It was still dark so I took a chance and headed to one of the two showers in our part of the campground. Lots of people here for only two showers but I lucked out. On my way to breakfast I saw two guys with ladders washing and waxing neighboring RVs. Seemed like a good idea to me as I have never been able to actually clean my solar panels, rooftop, middle little window on top RT. After breakfast and the special meeting for Newbies, I came back as they were working on it. Good to have it waxed and it looks great. Hope not too many bugs on the way home. Now sitting with my computer at the picnic table trying to ... read more

I've had my Roadtrek for four years and have driven over 23,000 miles through rolling hills, plains, and deserts, up mountains, into cities and through small towns. So when I saw the listing for the 2017 Roadtrek International Chapter Rally in Goshen, Indiana, I signed up. I stopped Sunday in Naperville, Illinois, for birthday cake and a visit with Aunt Milda, then dinner, dominoes, and a comfortable bed at Matt & Laura's. This morning, after a stop at Dunkin Donuts, I drove south to I-80, then east on the Indiana Tollway to Exit 92: Elkhart. This area is Amish County with several small towns, shops, restaurants, farm fields. Our home for the rally is the campgrounds at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds in Goshen. I pulled in just-in-time for registration where, as a first-timer or newbie, ... read more

The big day has finally arrived. We got going this morning right after Kate got her final dose of rabies vaccine (she accidentally stepped on a bat!). We traveled about 335 miles to Elkhart, IN, which bills itself as the RV capital and is in fact the home of several RV manufacturers. We got here in time to tour the RV Museum and Hall of Fame, and they invited us to spend the night in their parking lot. So we will. We basically took I-90 to where it merged with I-80 near Cleveland and we will be driving on I-80 for the next four days! I don't usually like to travel the interstates so much but we wanted to put the miles behind us on the way out west. ... read more

No alarm went off this morning but I still woke up just on 5:30am - the boys were rapt. I was treated to a rendition of Happy Birthday at breakfast and was given choice of which legs to ride for the day - perfect. We left just before 7am and made our way ever eastward. Crash Test Jeff decided he was riding today and there was no way we could dissuade him. He did have a generous portion of pain meds though. The road was perfect for the first 50kms, soooo smooth, and the wind gods granted me strong tail winds for my birthday. Jeff actually handled the riding very well considering. His first leg was a little conservative but after that it was like nothing had happened. He did need a top up on the ... read more

I got into a rest area in Indiana and it had some pictures of some falls which looked interesting so I found them on the map and it was only 50 miles out of the way. Whats that when I've already done 4500 miles. Also I saw on the map the Longest covered bridge in USA so I went there too. I'm glad to get off the freeways and explore. Next stop was the Brickyard in Indianapolis. For those not a motor head that's the nickname for the motor racing circuit there. Got there 15 min before the museum shut. Drove on into Illinois and another Rest area. Got to see some fireflies. Not much to see except green fields and old farms. Got a head cold and was contemplating taking a day off, but decided ... read more

The last day of our trip. I intended to wake everyone early, but they were sleeping soundly. Instead I worked out for over an hour bike, elliptical, and pool time. I am glad I have maintained a workout schedule throughout this trip or I would not want to get on a scale. Woke the family up at 7 am for breakfast and to leave. After breakfast the plan was for me to drive through Nebraska. Nebraska was so flat and green. Very few trees were noted. The farms seemed grow hay and not corn like I would have assumed. The road was so empty and I could easily push my speeds on this road making it a nice drive. A hawk flew in front of the car window as if he had some sort of death ... read more
