First, an apology/explanation. It's been a month since we got back home and I am just now getting around to finishing this blog. We got back from the wedding and visits and crashed. Then we had loads of yard work to do. Got it done and our son and grandsons came to visit. They were here for over 10 days and we had FUN. But needless to say, I was not about to sit and write when we had so much going on. Now I am back and will wrap this up and get it posted. When we left Wisconsin, we decided to take a bit of time to "collect" a couple of more states for our map on our way home. For those not in the know, we have a small vinyl map of the ... read more

Our original plan was to leave Jellystone and stay the night in Springfield, IL. That would give us a chance to do all the things I wanted to do and see all the things I wanted to see... But, as is becoming a common thread in all of my blogs, it was way too hot! In fact, the headline that ran in the State Journal-Register was "Springfield sweats through hottest day in more than 40 years"... The last time the temperature was that hot (104 degrees Farenheit/40 degrees Celsius) was July 13, 1966!! (url=http://www.sj-r.com/archive/x537696878/For-Springfield-could-be-hottest-day-in-more-than-50-yearshttp://www.sj-r.com/archive/x537696878/For-Springfield-could-be-hottest-day-in-more-than-50-years) We arrived around 4:30pm, I think, and it was so hot, there was no way we could even set up camp, so we decided to stop and see one or two of the sights I felt I would regret not... read more

Welcome back! I am inspired by my good friend the HomebodyVoyager to try to see more of the areas where I travel (for my awesome relatively-new job with Northwest Cadence) and to blog about them. Today, I'm in Springfield, Illinois. Because of my prior experience writing software for the University of Washington, I've been sort of designated our liaison for software development teams in the public sector, which means I'm going to get to see a lot of state capitals. Springfield is one of those capitals that make it hard to memorize all the state capitals. I don't think folks outside of Illinois have much reason to know where it is or what goes on here. If you've heard of (or flown through) a city in Illinois, it almost certainly isn't this one. (See also: Olympia, ... read more

August 10, 2012 The Illinois State Fair was first held in 1853. Admission was a quarter. Being life-long Hoosiers we finally decided to cross the border and give it a visit. It was an overcast morning as we arrived at the fairgrounds in Springfield. My being a few years older than Karen saved us $4. Like the Indiana fairgrounds, the one here also contains a dirt racing track. Today was Harness Racing Day. Overall, the Illinois State Fair seems a lot smaller than Indiana's. You will find, though, an over abundance of food vendors. They were everywhere! We walked through the Exhibitor's Building, which also on the mezzanine level acted as a check-in station for some 4-H projects. You won't find the slew of projects to view as you do in Indiana. The Illinois system for ... read more

The actual distance from Pacific, MO to Springfield, IL is short, the drive time was not as short as we anticipated. We were on the road by 10:30 after some swimming and cooling off and St. Louis was the next town. Our first stop was Dewy's Frozen custard, a Route 66 tradition. What makes it frozen custard and not ice cream? It's been cooked! Which means Anne and Michelle can eat it without worrying about lactose :). since we had not done lunch yet, we only shared a small treat. It was the consistancy of soft serve but much creamier. As the server handed it to us she turned it upside down. Apparently that's to show that the custard is so thick and frozen it sticks to the bowl. Or next stop was Fitz's American Grill ... read more

Theis town has a slight obsession with Abraham Lincoln, the bearded president with a hat. Statues abound and there is also the Lincoln presidential library museum to view, inclusive of incredibly patriotic, some may say cheesy films. Reading between the lines, he sounds like a politician, all be it a very charismatic one! Anyway, his (apparently somewhat dubious) role inabolishing slavery and uniting the nation afforded him a rather grand memorial. He now rests below several feet of concrete and according to the tour guide his embalmed body looks rather same as the day he died and will do so for at least 300 more years? Having dutifully taken in some history and culture we pressed on to Grafton, a small town on the banks of the Mississippi. Forgot to mention it was a day of ... read more

Yesterday afternoon we kept seeing SAVE DWIGHT PRISON signs in front yards. Curious to learn what this was about we Googled 'Save Dwight Prison' and learnt that the prison employs 350 people locally, but its closure has been announced because the infrastructure upgrades that the prison needs make it unviable to keep it open. Apparently the prison guards received their notices on 23 May 2012 - a real blow to the local economy. After a self-catered breakfast of fruit and cereal in our room, we spent the morning in Pontiac. We started by photographing the Historic 1875 County Court House. We were hampered somewhat by the works that are being undertaken opposite the court house. The site building has been placed right in front of the court house which does spoil the street-scape somewhat!! Next we ... read more

A few friends have asked that I make sure that I keep them up to date with the trip along the way and I'm already misplacing email addresses on scraps of paper that I received before moving back to Illinois. So I figured that doing a blog would be the best way to let those people follow my trip without me having to worry about forgetting someone on a list of email addresses. By the way, this is the weather outside as I write this post... makes me look forward to starting the trip as soon as possible.... read more
