Wow what a night the night before was! I woke up with quite a headache, even worse was the fact that Alec was sleeping next to me snoring away! Not a pleasant sight. Everyone else gradually started to wake up from the dead with half drunken mumblings and sore throats. But Joel, now this is a man who gets up really early, either that or he just doesn't sleep at all. He was up at the crack of dawn and managed to get us all some much needed breakfast in. Lovely Bagels. These again were huge, I struggled to finish one. It was more like a dinner than a breakfast. That filled me up. As the day moved on everyone was doing different things, some went for walks, some went down the bob sleigh shoot or ... read more

Hello there. Myself and my friend Alec Peachey visited my very good American friends the Messmore's in August 2007 for one week. First of all I would like to tell you how I met this fantastic family. Well, I was on holiday in Hawaii with my family for 2 weeks in 2005. We stayed there for a week and after three nights in Las Vegas, we then moved onto San Francisco for 4 nights. I met the Messmore family while I was soaking up some rays beside the hotel pool under the Hawaiian sunshine. Next to me was Joel, the dad of the family. I commented the pool and before I knew it we were chatting along nicely. I told him that I play football back home in England, that immediately raised a smile on his ... read more

Our first morning in the company of the Messmores, saw us being greeted by A homemade breakfast speciality of Joel. Sausage and gravy! it was delightful. To be honest when I first saw him dish it up I didn't think much of it. But how wrong I was. Alec was not that impressed! Well he is hard to please. Joke. We packed our bags and made our way to the Chestnut Mountain Resort in Northern Illinois. Nanny and Grandad Simpson were going to meet us there. It is there where the Messmores were having their family reunion. They have one every two years and we had been kindly invited to attend this one. The drive was not too long, Joel took us along some scenic routes alongside the mighty Mississippi river. An amazing sight it most ... read more

For some unknown reason to us all, we woke up at 6am, So got up, got ready and was out at just gone 8. We headed down to Navy Pier for some breakfast and a cruise on Lake Michigan and nearly came back without Nige, in his wisdom (although having plastered signs all over the boat 'to remain seated AT ALL TIMES') he decided there was a 'great' photo opportunity so got up to go to the other side of the boat only to lose his footing, fall almost into 3 unsuspecting japanese tourists, to then find his footing, but slip and hit the side rails, obviously like you do, Myself and Katie were doubled up with laughter as were the japanese tourists. We then headed back to the hotel to check out and collect the ... read more

We stopped at St. Louis and took plenty of pictures of the arch...arch from the bridge, arch from the road, paul with arch, danielle with arch, arch with both of us...etc etc...haha. Yay Gateway Arch! St. Louis is the "Gateway to the West"...and while you can actually go up in the arch and look around from the observatory, we both got there too late and Danielle's a little scared of rickety elevators at great heights. Then we stopped at Hannibal, Missouri, Mark Twain's hometown. Everything there is named for him or his characters, like the Mark Twain Dinette featureing Mark Twain Fried Chicken and homemade root beer. We sampled the chicken, climbed up Cardiff Hill over statues of Tom and Huck, and wandered around the town where his boyhood home is kept open for tours. Next ... read more

Yes, it truly was the worst coffee I have ever had! It was the color of weak tea and when you are travelling alone in an unknown part of the country with absolutely no sense of direction-well, coffee is very important. This was followed by a 30 minute check out disaster and then directions from the hotel that sent me in exactly the OPPOSITE direction from where I needed to be. By now you know that I have a very underdeveloped sense of direction and an unreliable GPS, which culminated in a 100 mile detour to get back to Toulon. I was feeling incredible pressure because I wanted to check out my Great Great grandparents Carr who I had found were buried in the Toulon cemetery, and I wanted to say goodbye to the Intrepid ... read more

This morning I left Toulon for an Abraham Lincoln side trip. Culture shock! The drive in was beautiful-2 lane highways that wind through small towns and corn fields, and corn fields, and corn fields! Along the way I stopped at the New Salem historical park. It is a living history park and they have done a good job of recreating the feel of a small frontier town-only a lot cleaner and with lots more things to buy. It was also filled with an obnoxious tour group of teen-agers, many summer day care groups, and lots of hot, sweaty families with kids who wanted to go home, go to the bathroom, go get an ice cream, get their parents to carry them, or just whined for general purposes. I only got about a third of the ... read more

28/04/07 - 29/04/07 Springfield - Chicago, Illinois Evening entertainment in Springfield - not a yellow-headed, skate-boarding Matt Groening character in sight (One episode of ‘The Simpsons’ featured a close up shot of Homer’s driving license which read ‘Springfield, NT’ - a non-existent place) but a working 2-screen Drive-In so we parked up in front of the big screen, tuned the radio to the relevant FM station, grabbed a pizza, popcorn and sodas and settled down to “Bridge to Terabithia”. We didn’t see anyone get stranded Grease-style so no whispers round the school on Monday. We bypassed the town museum and various monuments to it’s most famous resident - a certain prairie lawyer by the name Abraham Lincoln and scooted north where we popped into the Route 66 Attraction of Funk’s Grove, a Mecca for Maple sirup ... read more

Waking up in America is very different to waking up in Europe. It is so much busier - the cities never sleep. Breakfast American style comprises of enough food to feed the five thousand and have some left over. Chicago like many American cities is a city of two halves - the affluent part with the Magnificent Mile with its high class shops to the ghettoes on the outskirts. Most buildings are new - built after the great fire. A mixture of style ranging from Gothic to Art Deco. It is definately the Windy City with a nippy wind being pulled in from Lake Michigan which felt and looked more like an inland sea. We walked Navy Pier admiring the restaurant boats moored on the harbour side and wished we had more time to go on ... read more
