The heavens were pouring down on us the morning we broke camp at Mark Twain Cave. At 7:00 all weather apps said it would clear at 9. I did everything I could do in the rig without getting wet, but it looked like it was not going to stop at 9. I put on my raincoat and crocs and went and disconnected the landlines, including sewer. Not a fun thing to do anytime, and certainly not in the pouring rain. So, what happened next? Of course, the rain stopped. I left when I was ready to get gas; it was about $.15 cheaper/gallon in MO than in IL, $80 filled me up. The rain was moving east and so were we. I72 was a great road, nice pavement, no potholes or big cracks. And is Illinois ... read more

I really enjoyed the stop in Springfield, Illinois where I took in all the Lincoln sites. I visited the home that his family and he lived in while he practiced law in Springfield. The park service has created a neighborhood that would have existed during their time living in Springfield. It was the only home that Lincoln ever owned and his oldest son Robert sold it to the state for one dollar. I then visited the Lincoln Presidential Museum which was amazing. It is well worth a visit if you ever get to the area. It had great life-like exhibits and two well-presented movies to enhance the experience. Lincoln was always my favorite president so this was very enjoyable for me. The next day I went out to New Salem which is a reconstruction of the ... read more

Geo: 39.801, -89.6436Our time machine trip along Route 66 continues. Just under 90% of the road survives so every now and again we have to try and stitch pieces together but it's a relatively easy drive through American history even if Billy Thunder isn't quite giving us the Caddie experience. We did add satellite radio before we left but DH won't let me tune into the more appropriate 50's and 60's- her music world started and finished with the dreadful 70's. I'm not sure how many more Captain & Tenille top 10 song countdowns I can take. I do manage the odd break because of a pre-trip agreement to channel-change any time she tries to sign along with the song. It's not just that she can't carry a tune (she really can't), it's largely because she ... read more

And so it begins.... 5am came around VERY early. Wicked early. Early enough that the super-annoying bird that lives outside my house hadn't even gotten started. For those that don't know, I have a bird living right outside Eileen's bedroom window that is the working definition of an over-achiever. Pretty much every day, long before even the merest hint of light has appeared on the horizon, this little bastard is CHIRP-DE-CHIRPY-CHIRP ad infinitum. I've been imagining many creative ways to off this bird for the last several weeks, though to date I've not done anything precipitous. I digress... So today I was up even before he got started, and after a quick goodbye with my lady love (who SWORE she was going to get up with me...O'o) I was on my way to Hull to pick ... read more

Reason for the first stop was this book about haunted places along Route 66, starting with Springfield. There were problems with the heater on the first night in that it didn't stay on. Who turned it off? Abe Lincoln? Deciding on the masculine pair of glasses, I headed out! To go see Abraham Lincoln's house, you first get a ticket at the visitor's center. It's to help you also remember that This Guy wrote/signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the slaves. This was a monumental point in history, and it was cool to absorb those remembrances. The house supposedly has children and Mary Lincoln sometimes running around or rocking in chairs. I kept my eyes and ears out, but we were on this cute little tour thing, so it never got too spooky. We started the day at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. It is run by the State of Illinois and is excellent. Using multiple media, there are several sections that examine different aspects of Lincoln, his life, and his times. In the large lobby there are life-size statues of the Lincoln family as they would have appeared on their arrival in Washington. Nearby is the Lincoln Home National Historic Site which contains, among other buildings, the only home Lincoln ever owned and where he and his family lived in Springfield for many years before moving to the White House. This site is run by the National Park Service and it too is extremely well done. It was inspiring and humbling to walk the same floors that Abraham Lincoln once walked. Altogether I was most impressed with the ... read more

This morning we left St. Louis, gazing fondly once more at the Gateway Arch as we drove across the river to Illinois. Our first stop was the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center located where the Corps of Discovery spend the winter before they set off on their historic trek to the West Coast. The information was well done and the best part was a full-scale replica of the keelboat they used on the first part of their journey. We drove to the National Great Rivers Museum located on the Mississippi River near the confluence of the Missouri and Illinois Rivers. It presented a natural history of the rivers. Next door is one of the 27 locks on the upper Mississippi River and we watched as an extremely large set of barges went through the lock. The ... read more

I was raised and spent most of my working life in the Rockford IL area and still have lots of family in the region, so I find myself returning on a regular basis. According to mapquest.com, the drive to Rockford from my aunt’s home in White Mills KY is slightly less than 500 miles. At this point in my life, that distance is a doable one-day drive IN AN EMERGENCY; however, I had no emergency looming on September 11, 2013 so I incorporated a slight diversion to Springfield IL into my itinerary. Springfield, being the adult home of Abraham Lincoln and the capital of Illinois, has a lot of attractions that pique my interest and provides an excellent stopover point as I journey to or from Rockford. I actually began my trip to Springfield by travelling ... read more
