The 16 hour trek from Raleigh, NC to Rockford, IL (near Chicago) turned out to be 15 hours this time which was a pleasant surprise although none the less gruelling. But we made it here and sure enough wake up Sunday morning to Rockford welcoming me back with snow. And now, Monday morning I believe it is still snowing and we have at least 2-3 inches on the ground. We had the pleasure of hanging out with our friends after which Tony and I entered our Oscar picks for a chance to win a trip to the red carpet next year and sat down to watch only to get a severe blow as we miss the very first nomination. Our only comfort was the fact that it was a year of unpredicted winners - we tried. ... read more

Hotel Downtown Chicago When people tell you that Chicago is the windy city they aren’t joking. A couple Octobers ago we were stuck at Ohara International waiting for a connecting flight to DC to visit family. We never made the flight that day due to bad weather, so we had to find a place to stay in Chicago and wait out the storm. I was lucky to book a Chicago hotel suite at the Whitehall Hotel which is this historical hotel that was really nice. The staff was really cool and we were like one of five people getting the last suites available. We were stuck in the hotel with nothing to do, but watch TV and hang out all day waiting for word from the airport. Being vegan it was very difficult to eat even ... read more

Home at last! I can't believe I leave TOMORROW for Spain. I've spent the past few days packing and getting pumped for the best semester of my life! It would be nice if I had a LITTLE more time to relax but oh well, perhaps it is better if I never stop moving. :) The last few days in Alex were absolutely amazing. Marwan was our tour guide throughout the town and we explored all the wonders of the richer Egyptian life. We even ate at a McDonalds (oooh ahhh) which is one of the more expensive places to eat since it is a western chain. I tried the "McArabia" which is basically a slab of pressed chicken on a pita and it was fairly good (although Danice would disagree...poor thing...). But overall, Alex was great! ... read more

Update: There's really very little to tell about our travels, since they (STILL) haven't started yet. But we are getting closer to our departure date. We are exactly one week away from Cleveland and only about three more days beyond that to Costa Rica. Since the last post we've had our little meeting with the immunization people, had a few injections (Hepatitis A and Typhoid) from which Elise is still whining about the arm pain days later. Personally it just felt like a punch in the arm... from an elderly person... with osteoperosis, but some people are just a little more "dramatic" than others. In the meantime, we continue, or I should say, Elise continues to plan our adventure exhaustively spending more time researching lodging, transportation, packing, eating, drinking, shoe choice, diarrhea medicine, and anything else ... read more

Hey. I just thought I would send out an initial entry to everybody as I pack and get ready to leave. Many of you reading this already new that, but for those of you that didn’t, you can congratulate me on becoming Uncle Jonathan. I’d like to give a shout out to Alyse, Andy, and Sarah. Alright, next time your hear from me I’ll probably be in either Tokyo or Bangkok. Talk to you then. -Jonathan ... read more

Flight back yesterday was long but uneventful. Some managed to stay up later last night than others, but as a rule we were tired and hit the hay early. Most of us were up early this morning. Thanks again for following our trip! Mark, Deb and the kids... read more
