Howdy Y’all….. this has been the southern part of our tour, and yet again, is a complete contrast. It has been hot and humid, almost tropical....... you expect to see giraffes drinking at the water's edge, not long horn cattle. As I write this we are sitting out in a warm balmy night, after a crushingly humid day, chirruping things chirping, bitey things biting, fire flies glowing and in the background , country music being performed from the porch. Yep we are most definitely in the South. It has been a great time and full of all those things you think are a “cliché of country”. Elegant southern houses, cowboys , long horn cattle & horses, Blues & Country music, catfish and gumbo. The last few weeks have been a bit more urban based than normal, ... read more

This was a great day. I started it out at about 8:30 AM by walking almost two miles from my hotel to Navy Pier. The streets were very empty out where I am staying (they are usually very busy) due to the holiday and "Taste of Chicago" in Grant Park. At Navy Pier, I had a quick bite to eat at McDonald's and then picked up a bicylce I reserved online from Bike Chicago. It was a comfortable mountain bike with easy to shift gears. From there, I rode leisurely along the coastline... around Shedd Aquarium (highly recommended, but I went there a few years back) and to the Adler Planetarium (http://www.adlerplanetarium.org/). Then I watched "Space in Your Face", which is mainly a lesson on the constellations and some other interesting facts. It was early and ... read more

Not too much sightseeing so far, as I've been mostly working. The photos are from either my hotel room or where I work. Next week I'm scheduled to be here for July the 4th... and I hope to rent a bicycle and ride around. Then I should have more photos.... read more

We have just had a very relaxing and refreshing week in Chicago with Ben and Rebecca Hauert. They.took us around and showed us a good time. Boy, is Chicago flat! There are no hills to be seen. If you do find a slight incline its man-made and usually a landfill. We went up the Sears Tower - the tallest building in the States (it used to be the tallest building in the world) and we could see for miles! While we were up there we realised we were in a potential terrorist target and imagined what it would have been like to see planes coming at ya… and then we read in the newspaper the next day that the FBI had arrested some people who were planning to take out the Sears Tower! Crazy We found ... read more

A day like any other really, except this was the day that Priya and David would finally tie the knot. It was sunny out, which boded well, and much of the morning was spent dolling ourselves up and ensuring our cameras were charged and memory cards free and ready to go. Priya is the first from this side of the family to get married, and my whole family had turned up for the event. From my grandmother who flits around from America to Australia to India following the sun, to relatives I didn’t even know existed other than in a vague intellectual sense in the back of my mind. Luckily it’s Indian tradition to call anyone older than you ‘aunty’ or ‘uncle’, which saved a lot of embarrassing moments that could have arisen from not knowing ... read more

So today we headed out to Uncle Pradeep’s house for some more familial bonding. As expected, Uncle Prakash threw us all random mathematical and logic questions that we couldn’t for the life of us answer, although disturbingly not all the riddles were new - apparently I’ve grown dumber in my old age. My favourite is the following - ‘H I J K L M N O - explain’ So simple, so obvious, although I couldn’t for the life of me get it at the time. Kumar came closest with ‘Aqua’ - why he thought of the Spanish equivalent to the answer is beyond me. Failing at our quest to prove our mathematical genius (there’s a reason I quit statistics), Yash and I went to play with Alisha and Sofia - sweet kids with questions I am ... read more
