Short entry for a short journey. First day of travel went easy enough. It's only a 5ish hour drive. Left Michigan around 1ish, which meant that my packing procrastination had plenty of time to not mess things up! Even the traffic on the cursed Dan Ryan wasn't so bad. It was lovely to hang out w/ some friends in Chi-town, for what little time I had to spend there. My awesome host, Karin, and I went to a Fillipino market to get some awesome treats. Then we headed to T's for dinner. Got to talk w/ Jo, who I hadn't seen since August, and other peeps I met at New Years. Also met a friend of Karin's who is also moving to MN. Yay for networking. And, what might be the best part, I didn't even ... read more

The first thing I noticed about Chicago was its sheer size it took 40 minutes on the train to get to downtown from the airport. The second thing I noticed was how friendly the people were, everyone was eager to help, and people showed a genuine interest in our trip what we had done and what we were doing. It was a real positive and happy atmosphere. The third thing I noticed was after I came up to street level, and it was how beautiful the city was. The various styles of architecture gave Chicago a sense of identity different from any other US city. Its position next to lake Michigan acted as a stunning backdrop to the glorious high-rising towers & skyscrapers that fill the Chicago skyline. The city, which burnt down in 1871, attracted ... read more

I arrived in Chicago after four fun filled days in NYC, was a rather painful flight as we were delayed for 2 hours sitting on the runway. The flight was short, only and hour and a half, and I slept most of it as I was really tired. I arriaved late, and didnt see much on my way to Highland Park ... read more

it is official, we are on american soil once again. we landed yesterday after getting in our fill of almost 7 hours of movies thanks to the comforts and conveniences provided by united. steve and bonnie, tone's parents, picked us up and treated us to exactly what we needed - a truly american experience at the rainforest cafe. we felt almost miniature as we crawled into one of those crescent-shaped booths and seemingly gigantic glasses that they more then willingly refill! stuffed by the american portions we came back to the house to be reunited with our pups that are significantly smaller then we remembered and then ventured to try to stay awake as long as possible. i only lasted until 9 which i believe was around 3 or 4 in the morning our time. it's ... read more

We got to Chicago after a non-eventful train journey (thank God). We arrived at the hostel, a bit out of town but there's 24 hour metro so was great, and promptly got chucked out! Only for a couple of hours though, lock out hostels suck, but they do make you get out of bed even with the most serverest hangover (poor Trev!). We went into the city the next day, heading for the Library for free internet. Chicago is the city in the States we,ve been to so far that looks and feels like home. The architecture is very european and feels like theres a lot of history around. The Library building was beautiful itself, it was a shame that when we used the computers we all slowly noticed that over half of the people there ... read more

Welcome back, seems like I only did a journal a few days ago and that's true only because I had one sitting online without publication for 3 days, took me awhile to find a place to upload photo's and I don't like submitting half finished journals online without photo's but the most important part is text and the joyous stories so Im here now to get the 6 day section between arriving in Chicago and arriving in New York City off my chest. NYC is exciting enough to do an entire journal on exclusively (as you could probably guess because well... it is New York City) I'll get onto that hopefully this coming week. Depending on how gracious the net-cafe fairies are. Ive been blessed here in NYC, $5us for 4 hours continuous... but with no ... read more

Chicaaaagggoooo… Chicago was a long 12 hours from Toronto on the bus via Detroit ( I didn’t see eminem) and involved another delightful stop at customs, this time it was the Americans asking the questions. It took Fran ages to get through, they read loads of her journal, probably thought she looked dodgy..! Only joking. Anyway, arrived in Chicago late as usual but got checked in ok. Very expensive for a hostel, but we both had nice rooms, very spacious with an attached bathroom-which is handy for midnight loo runs! First thing on the agenda, as always it seems with large US cities, is to go up something large and we chose the Sears Tower over the Hancock Observatory because it was taller! Fantastic views of the city and the surrounding suburbs at the top of ... read more

So National Honor Society Decided to send some of us to Chicago. It was Michelle, Sierra, Meghan, and Me along with Mr. Ellison and Mrs. Gabrielle. Outside of the conference we went to it was a blas. haha The conference was just ice breakers, not that great. We basically ran around the city the whole time seeing everything we could and getting little info clips from mr. ellison. On the way home, our flight was delayed and were the last flight allowed out because of weather. A little unsettleing, but we could see the lightening in the clouds around us as we were taking off, it was amazing. ... read more

The trip back into America was interesting. At customs everyone on the coach has to disembark and take their luggage through. The customs officer that I went to was quite nosy! She was even reading my journal and cards from friends that I have brought with me! At least she was doing her job well, but it did mean that most of the coach, bar two people, had to wait for me. The funniest part was when she was quizzing me concerning marriage to Thommo! She wanted to know if and when we were planning to get married and would it be in the States, she said it is quite common for foreigners to do so. When we arrived at our hostel, which was quite late, we just went to bed. Getting used to tip toeing ... read more

Usually when it rains, the steady and melodic sound of raindrops hitting the roof and windows and the occasional rumblings of thunder in the distant help me to sleep well through the night but not this night. When you have plans to go to a Cubs baseball game the next day, hearing rain while you're sleeping is not a good thing. Needless to say, we woke up to a damp and dreary Sunday morning in Huntington, Indiana, but we faithful Cubs fans were not deterred. We began our three and a half our journey to Wrigley Field despite the rainy weather and 100% chance of rain forecast for Chicago. Our only glimmer of hope in seeing the Cubs game rested in the radar which showed the rain potentially ending in Chicago around game time. But as ... read more
