Woke up to rain. Waited for a lull, then packed up the bikes, it was raining again as we left. The spray from the big trucks is quite something and I could see Jim, in front of me, disappear into the spray of the oncoming truck knowing I had a couple of seconds before my turn, then its like a frenzy of water, wind, noise, and blindness before its all gone again - its a bit like a water flume ride! When the rain stopped, the wind started, and we road across Idaho. To sum up Idaho - wind, seed potatoe capital and God, and they seem obsessed with watering everything, but it does mean its very green. We visited 'Craters of the Moon' a volcanic landscape that looked like a gigantic slag heap, but apparently ... read more

Today we are driving the Peaks to Craters Scenic Byway on our way to Yellowstone National Park. We are traveling a very diverse Idaho landscape, mountains, deserts, lava fields, and irrigated pastures. We stopped at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve which had volcanic activity as recent as 2000 years ago. Literature from the park indicates that it got it's name from a geologist that described it as "the surface of the moon as seen through a telescope." (The craters on the moon are actually formed by meteorites, not volcanos). In 1924 President Coolidge proclaimed Craters of the Moon a National Monument, preserving "a weird and scenic landscape, peculiar to itself." The lava fields come from not one volcano but rather a series of deep fissures in the earth's crust-known collectively as the "Great ... read more

We planned to do the underground tour in Pendleton, however due to a special event over the weekend, it was closed on Monday. Instead we toured the Pendleton Woolen Mill, where they make Native American blankets. We were able to see the entire process in action. Interestingly, the geometric shapes on the blankets are made using punch card technology (60's era)in the machine. The other blankets with cowboy, wildlife and other images use computer technology. Monday was a long travel day heading to Twin Falls, Idaho. We originally planned to stop at the Boise Capitol, however, an iPhone malfunction caused us to stop at an Apple store instead. We found the mountain roads in Oregon much more stunning than those in Idaho. We decided to take a scenic detour by the Snake River Canyon Scenic Byway ... read more

Just a quick blog right now to say we are OK - terrible internet access at the Inn of America motel in Lewiston last night, and arrived late, so just having coffee at Ronnie's this morning so can write. More to come later. On our way to Missoula Montana this morning and will assess whether we ride this afternoon or stay put and chill once we're there. KEEP THE COMMENTS COMING. Checking for comments has become part of our daily ritual and we LOVE hearing from you, it keeps us connected to home. So talk to us! No limit! Love, Helli and Ian... read more

Getting ready for another active teacher traveling summer AND - this year only! - even a personal vacation!! We can't wait for our trip in June, right after school gets out, spending a week on the Cornish Coast. The coast holds a special place in my heart, I think because we spent so much time near the ocean when I was a child. So this year we will be spending time on the English coast which is a first for us! Added to the trip, we will spend some time in Bath, in a castle, as well as in Dublin and London. SO exciting! In addition, I'll be going to Nashville with my FCCLA kiddos in July and taking a Fellowship trip to Washington, DC in August! I thought, this year, it would be great to ... read more

Since we were able to get so much done on Tuesday packing, plus, we were able to get a 2 bedroom suite at the TownePlace Suites if we could check out on Wednesday, we decided to leave Wednesday afternoon and head to Boise. This would also give us all day Thursday to explore the Columbia River Gorge area on our way from Boise to Portland. This morning, Ron picked up Scott and the rest of his stuff, then came back to the hotel to pack up all of our stuff. We killed some time in Provo, then headed to West Valley City to meet up with Cindy for dinner before heading to Boise. Tonight we stayed at another TownePlace Suites and were lucky enough to get an upgrade to a 2 bedroom suite. This one had ... read more

Montana is so beautiful! No photos today, it was a total driving day. I woke up around 5am to the sound of trucks departing the hotel. I guess the hunters were setting off early. So, I walked Oskar then hopped back into bed. It was still dark, so no need to be up so early. I did consider getting the kids up and hitting the road early but opted for the warm bed instead. Today was our earliest start yet with us getting on the road before 9am. Not bad!! Our day was very uneventful with us spending the majority of the day in the car. We took many quick breaks to keep us on the move. We did take lunch in Bozeman, MT at big M's with a playplace. Molly needed to burn off some ... read more

Stayed in Nampa, Idaho to get an oil change, and take a much needed break. I spent the rest of the day relaxing in the hot tub and pool. Bill went to the Harley dealer to get something to remove some adhesive he spilled on his tank when he repaired his handgrip. Rick spent part of the day uploading his pictures. The weather was beautiful but we didn’t ride anywhere except to go to dinner.... read more

https://picasaweb.google.com/101506993269424417039/Day12?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCOiY7qu68PyAvAE&feat=directlink This is a little longer than usual because I have a lot more time to write it. We got a late start because Bill and I shipped some things home that we weren’t going to need to free up space and the UPS store didn’t open until 8 am. I also shipped all of the souvenirs I have been buying. Iowa falls seemed to be a nice small town with a population of 80,000. Everyone was friendly. That’s pretty much true of everyone we have met since leaving the east coast. While I was planning this trip, and trying to imagine what it would be like I thought that I would be talking with a lot of different people and spending a fair amount of time reading. Neither is true. I haven’t even looked at ... read more
