Geo: 43.611, -116.393Hi All - Sean kicking things off here. To be fair, we are going to hike part of the Haute Route; not the whole thing. That would just be crazy :-). However, we are going to be content (and likely more comfortable) with taking in some of the highlights of this historic trek including the tranquil Champex-Lac, the remote Cabane du Mont Fort, the mountain luxury of the Hotel Weisshorn, and (hopefully) views of the Matterhorn from Zermatt where hikers thrive and cars don't drive. After months of planning and preparing, we are off to test our bodies , our minds, and our pocketbooks in a country with world renowned mountains and pricey 2-star hotels. We have put in some training to prepare for the journey in hopes of having a moderate level of ... read more

Day 4 Woke up to breakfast at the hotel (waffles, eggs, etc) Boys were slow at getting up but we have another big day.so off we go. Took a while to get going but got out eventually with Tyler driving the first leg to the Idaho Potato Factory in Blackfoot. Cute, small but way worth it! The museum is located inside their Chamber of Commerce building. Took pictures and we’re on our way again. I’ve taken over the wheel to Arco, Idaho and lunch at Pickle’s Place. Burgers, fries and fried pickles for all. Even bought some of John’s famous seasoning…We continued on through flat Idaho (with Evan driving) until we got to craters of the Moon National Park. After a short Visitor Center stop, we headed out to the park. What a spectacular place! It ... read more

Bill and I have had two adventure filled days travelling in Idaho and then through Yellowstone Park in Montana and Wyoming. After spending the night in Twin Falls, Idaho we got up early and arrived at the Shoshone Indian Ice Caves, just outside Shoshone, of course. This area of Idaho is very much influenced by the historic Shoshone tribes who made their home along the Snake River. In the early 1900s the tribe was moved off their land to a reservation. These caves are spectacular to tour. The fee was 10 dollars and worth every cent. I expected underground caves with hieroglyphics instead; we travelled through a lava field and entered the largest cave by stone steps. The cave was accidentally discovered in1860 by a young child. So what is an ice cave? According to the ... read more

Well today was an 80 mph Interstate 15 day North to Salt Lake City. The Cities Main St parallels the Interstate, so inand out of the City was relatively easy. The entry and exit were typical of American Cities. Mile after mile of fast food, malls and general business., car dealerships and gas stations, what would ever happen if we ran out of gasoline!! Was surprised at the downtown core. No different than any other city. Not sure why I thought it would be. The Temple St area ant the Olympic Village was beautiful. Walked through the Temple Garden Where we took a few pics. Into the Genealogical Society of Utah to look at our families history . Both Kate and I spent an hour and a half on the research computers. Starbucks for a coffee ... read more

Spent today at the EISF (the Eastern Idaho State Fair) in Blackfoot, Idaho. What a kick. Barns and arenas of horses, pigs, sheep, goats, 4-H activities of sewing, photography, sugar art, building, you name it. Ate at the Fair, and came back to rig just in time for a storm to kick up wind and rain, thunder and lightning. Very glad to be home and dry. We pull out of here in the morning for Salt Lake City.... read more

Our last day in Missoula, we visited the University of Montana campus, walked around, visited an art gallery, enjoyed lattes, and Carolyn bought a MONTANA GRIZ t-shirt. (Also took care of last -day stuff like replenishing the fridge and filling with diesel.) We headed next to Dillon, MT, where we thought we had a reservation for two nights. Because our reservation had fallen through the cracks, we had NO reservation, and it was Labor Day weekend, and they were full! Very nice young couple, had just taken over the trailer park only 5 days previously. They found us a site for one night; and Ron called ahead to our next place in Idaho Falls. Despite it being Labor Day weekend, they did have space to let us come in a day early. Our one afternoon/dearly evening ... read more

August 16, 2013 Friday We packed up and left our campsite at 9:00 a.m. It’s a beautiful, blue sky, sunny day and 64 degrees. Head East on I-84, passing Boise and Twin Falls and lots and lots of corn fields again. A stop in Jerome, Idaho for lunch and then back on the road. Lots of open prairie lands and sagebrush. Smoke from state fires all around makes for a real hazy looking sky on the horizon. Except for a few ranches here and there the land is very devoid of humanity in this part of Idaho. At least what we’re passing on the highway. We’ve crossed the Snake River twice now, maybe one more time? I guess that’s why it’s called the ‘Snake’ River. At our last site we were less than a mile to ... read more

A Sunset Over the Snake River - Evening We Arrived

Annette and Tom were leaving the reunion and flying north to the Arctic Circle to tour around the Svalbard Archipelago. Steve and Ellie were heading south to New Zealand and the rest of us were driving east or west to our homes. We decided to do some exploring on the way back to California so when we left the Black Hills we headed for the back roads of Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon. We probably wouldn’t have found Crazy Woman Battlefield, Rattlesnake Lane, Poison River, Massacre Rocks or my personal favorite, Bumpass Hell, along the interstate highways. Wyoming has to be one of the prettiest states in the union. Buffalo is an old frontier town which saw its share of battles both between Indians and settlers and between farmers and the cowmen. It sounds like a song ... read more
