Up early again this morning to head out to the airport at 5:45am. (This vacation stuff is exhausting!) We flew to Oahu for our all-day tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor. Our tour bus took us first to the Punchbowl cemetery which is a military cemetery in Honolulu. Service members from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf war are buried there. Also Ernie Pyle, the famous WWII correspondent. It really was a very beautiful setting. Then we got a tour of some sights of old Honolulu - a gorgeous palace which was the residence of the last several kings (and one queen), the famous King Kamehameha statue, and an old church built out of coral. Which was not coral-colored, but still cool. Though Patti and Allison had high hopes, there were no sightings of Steve McGarrett ... read more

Aloha for possibly the final time!!! (BooooooHooooooo) Thursday here dawned very wet and overcast but still very warm. It looked like it had been raining for quite some time because the Ala Wai Canal over the back of us was very brown and dirty compared with its usual colour. We were a bit concerned because we had a helicopter flight booked for 3pm this afternoon and the weather level was very low but we assumed that it would pick up…..and it did!! We had decided that we would get up, have breakfast and head out to Hanauma Bay to do some snorkeling at this famous ‘marine reserve’. So we got into our togs and headed out about 8am thinking that would be early enough. Drove the 45 minutes there only to find that the car park ... read more

Aloha from a very warm and muggy Honolulu at 10.30pm on Sunday night. Believe it or not, it has just rained here. A passing shower I suppose you would call it but it seemed to have cooled things down just a little. Not really too much to tell about today. It turned into another ‘shopping day’…….my all time favourite way to spend time as most of you will know…….NOT. However I was good and drove Joy to the malls she wanted to visit and carried all the clothes etc. around the stores as she gathered them up!!!! Anyway, better start at the beginning I suppose. Didn’t hurry out of bed this morning….it was Sunday after all. We had a very leisurely breakfast of cereal, fresh fruit, yogurt, toast and tea sitting out on the ‘lanai’ (balcony/deck) ... read more

11th February Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii Honolulu is the state capital of Hawaii and is situated on the island of Oahu. It is known worldwide as a major tourist destination and is a major hub for business and has a huge military presence. Hawaii was forged by volcanoes and is part of the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, so the approach to the harbour produces a dramatic backdrop to the city of Honolulu. We berthed at Pier 10/11, the Cunard berth which is on the edge of the business and shopping areas. Another beautiful South Pacific day. Another cruise ship (same one as San Francisco) had berthed before us but on the industrial side of the docks. Our trip today was to take us to Pearl Harbour and then on a tour of some highlights of ... read more

So I just spent about an hour typing up a very interesting and humorous final blog entry to try and top the rest. I left my computer for about an hour and when I came back to publish my entry travelblog.org had automatically logged me out of my account and my epic blog entry WAS NOT THERE! Turns out I didn't press the save button....So now I am going to attempt to rewrite what was originally written - remembering to press the save button every so often. We arrived back to normality about two and a half weeks ago. In fact it almost seems like we have never been away. I have been meaning to type up my final blog entry since I got back as I was hoping to print all my entries off and ... read more

We were up early today watching the Oosterdam come into Honolulu. We're docked right at the foot of the Aloha Tower where cruise ships have been docking for years. Awesome to get some pictures just as we were going past from the same level on the ship as almost the top of the tower! And speaking of pictures, I am having a problem getting my pictures to publish as part of a blog entry. I spent a lot of time yesterday trying to get some of the many pictures I've taken to publish but no luck. I can see them from my sd card on this tablet and they seem to upload into the blog site but I don't get a publish command and they don't magically appear either. Maybe my old hand bloggers can give ... read more

Thirty-six hours after finishing work at Steamworks - and fresh from having spent a great final day in Vancouver drinking beers with my ex-workmates, watching an Australian finally win the US Masters golf, and then retiring to my luxury hotel suite for the night - I was making my way across the Canada-U.S. border bound for the small airport at Bellingham, from where my ridiculously cheap ($112 US) flight to Honolulu would depart. Six hours after taking off we were touching down in the Hawai'ian capital on the island of O'ahu, where despite the fact that it was already after ten o'clock at night the temperature was a balmy twenty-plus degrees, with the high humidity and jungle-like trees surrounding the airport instantly announcing the tropical nature of the islands - something I had not experienced since ... read more
