After a long flight to Hawaii, I finally made it!!! It was great to see Judy. Her husband is, I do not know, someone important in the Navy (I am not good with military ranks). So they live on Ford Island. It is my first time to Hawaii. It was my first time at a check point for military. After picking up my car rental, I met Judy at the military office to obtain a pass to access Ford Island. Away from the airport, my first introduction to Hawaii was this beautiful tree that Judy showed me. It was in the Child household's backyard. They had to put concrete down to stop it from re-rooting itself again. It was huge; it was unique; it was "loved" (aka written on). After this, it was a night of ... read more

During my years working for Celebrity Cruises I was exposed to lots of adventure. I had two more weeks until I finish with my six-month contract onboard Celebrity Century. We were on our way back to Alaska after successful cruise season from Australia and New Zealand . This time the ship was cruising around the islands of Hawaii for a month. I came here in Honolulu, Oahu ' The Big Island' for my first skydiving experience and it was worth every penny! I was together with two friends of mine. One of the girl was from Macedonia as well. Her name is Arta and the other girl Liz was from Peru. We did make reservation online few days ago and we did agreed to wait for the Skydive Hawaii van in front of the cruise terminal ... read more

Greetings from the state of Hawaii, where my friend Tom and I are staying for two and a half weeks, visiting the islands of O'ahu, Hawai'i and Maui. This first blog entry is for O'ahu. For those of you who don't know this, 70% of the population of the state of Hawaii live on O'ahu, and the capital of the state, Honolulu (population 371,657), as well as Pearl Harbor, are on this island. The state is, of course, a melting pot of people of different ancestries: Polynesian, European, Japanese, and Chinese, to name just a few. And O'ahu, as I discovered, is much more than just Honolulu and Waikiki. Comprised of two mountain ranges (the Wai'anae on the west coast and the Ko'olau on the windward shore), it offers spectacular mountain views and hikes, relatively ... read more

Why did the chicken cross the road? If you're to finally come up with the definitive answer, it'll be in Hawaii. You'd swear they are the state bird by the sheer numbers running rampant. Free range (with an emphasis on free, nobody owns them), robust, healthy looking chooks scooting around loving life in a way that chickens do. And they don't mind crossing the road. Problem is they don't always make it. Hawaiin roads are littered with the carcasses of failed attempts. Except on Oahu. On the other islands these chickens are as prevalent as complaints at a lawn bowls club. On Oahu they are as rare as, dare I say it, hen's teeth. Which begs the catchphrase of Dr Julius Sumner Miller (boy am I showing my age):"Why is it so?" The prognosis is as ... read more

After landing at the airport in Honolulu, we picked up our rental car and proceeded to our destination. We headed east from Honolulu and drove the winding road which took us along the coast to Waimanalo where we had rented a place on the beach for our stay in Hawaii. There was no AC but one didn't need it as the breezes blowing in from the sea were quite sufficient. The scenery along the beach could have been on a postcard as it was spectacular. The road going to Waimanalo was the scenic route, Hwy 72, which winds around the coast past Diamond head, Koko Head. and the Halona Blowhole. Our first day was spent at the Honolulu Zoo which is one of the most attractive zoos we've ever visited. It is the only zoo in ... read more

Still to come :) (can't publish anything until after I've submitted my report to Cruise Guru) ** UPDATE! So the competition is now done and dusted and guess what... I WON! Here's the link to the website with my photos, report and video: https://www.facebook.com/CruiseGuruAU#!/CruiseGuruAU/app_162383900546472 Here is a copy of my report: I’ll tell you why - it’s simple: luxury, all-inclusive meals, entertainment and easy travel all rolled up into a boat worthy of Mordor. Cruising really is for all ages: at 16, I cruised the Pacific on P&O’s Pacific Sun.At 21, I circumnavigated New Zealand on the Sun Princess. Now, at 26, I’ve cruised the Hawaiian Islands, ventured across the Pacific Ocean to Ensenada and then up to San Diego on the ‘Carnival Spirit’ as a... read more

Mit etwas Verzögerung nun der Tripreport für den Flugtrip nach Hawaii. Ausgangspunkt war der VIE-HNL Fare, welchem Man(n) einfach nicht widerstehen konnte. Much better today. Mastered the local bus system and with the help of Lonely Planet, found a nice hike to a waterfall and beyond through (at last) lush jungle foliage. It was great – and clearly surpassed anything that any of the tours to now has offered. Only danger was that after a fair bit of rain yesterday afternoon and evening, it was very slippery. Managed OK however. That said, the waterfall itself was a little bit disappointing – although the journey made it worthwhile. Perfect day weather wise – although the wind has stiffened tonight. The bus system seems to work very well and we forked out $25 each for a 4 day pass. At $2.50 a leg, that seems to represent pretty good value. Incidentally, we were befriended on the bus by a 50 ... read more

Geo: 21.3069, -157.858After the Big Island the ship did dock at Lahaina in Maui for a day but since we were planning on returning to Maui after spending some time in Oauhu, we didn't go activity crazy and just wandered through the town. There were a couple of historical sites (including the jail which gave DH a little policing jolt), the usual souvenir stands, and a surprising number of high end art shops (just who comes to Hawaii looking to spend tens of thousands on a piece of artwork.). I did, however, find some inspiration in a shop selling surrealist photographs- if Martin W falls short in his duties and we return home destitute, I think I'll utilize my newly discovered, somewhat feminine, artist (read Photoshop) skills in order to create some similar wow-type photographs and ... read more
