Carl and I checked with US Social Security to see if I can get benefits at age 62. They will send a letter here in four weeks. The key question is whether I worked for ten years in USA. I did work but my record was patchy. Watch this space. For the "Southern Cross and Boomerang" I feel like Don Quijote and you my readers will be my cyber Sancho Panzas. Those who stick with me - even laugh at me. Those who help me in this quest. Tilting at the widmills of inertia and indifference, while the future calls out for champions dreamers seers What better lance than beauty? A design as beguiling as the Mona Lisa(to an Australian). Even monarchists are enchanted. So what is my horses name?... read more

While visiting Taizhou Teachers College, Nanjing University, a High School and several English Academies, as well as speaking with numerous Chinese educators and students in various parts of China, I found the study of English in China to be paramount for each. All are trying to attain the "best" education possible, for two equally important reasons. There was the constant focus on personal success and achievement, and there was the hopeful desire, in whatever measure possible, to return something to their nation and all its fellow citizens (almost 1.4 billion). I visited the humble homes of very educated people and had the opportunity to discuss and interact freely. It quickly became obvious, that the Chinese dedication to learning, was no exageration, on the contrary. With very limited resources, every student of every age, as well ... read more

Let me comment on some additional impressions: All streets were very clean, though it will take some time for the waterways and canals to be cleaned from hundreds of years of pollution and neglect. Travelling through the country-side between Nanjing-Suzhou-Shanghai, in Jiangsu Province, I noticed an immense amount of tree-planting. An enormous, noticeably- enormous, amount of young trees are beeing added to the trees, that have survived a turbulent Chinese history. When one is poor and cold, both, man and nature suffer. The road and super-highway-system, and super-bridge-structures made an intense impression on me. Trucks and Commerce are thriving 24/7. Airport-structures and train-stations are massive and of stunning architecture and busy with travellers. But what was most obvious, was the unbelievable amount of construction of housing and industry. I saw the ... read more

Ft Clinch, Amelia Island. We stayed here last year and enjoyed it so we are back. We spent five days camped right on the beach. The park was quiet and great place to walk and bike. It was a short ride into town, Kel is a trooper she is back on her bike, but going slow.... read more

Basically went to Universal Studios and Disneyworld. Its kind of funny down there, it is really touristy and kitschy. Universal was pretty good. We were there for New Year's Eve fireworks which had a good atmosphere. I think I just may have cracked the theme park going tactics. Go early, before it opens and be with the first crowd to go in. Go on the popular rides one after the other - in the morning will hardly be any queue for about the first hour or so. Or, if you go a little bit later, start from way at the back of the park, because most people will be still near the front. We actually moved hotels to stay at Disneyworld - which gives you 3 extra hours in the parks. It wasn't that expensive because ... read more

As a retiring Foreign Language Teacher in Florida, it was not possible for me to refuse a teaching-contract at Taizhou Normal (Teachers) College in Jiangsu Province, China for June 2006. This reality pre-occupies me as I leave Coral Gables Sr. H.S. every school day, and I know, I will truly miss the special people I am privileged to work with. The loss of my "students" after so many years will be irreplaceable, for how does one replace a "treasure". Maintaining this travel-blog is becoming a therapeutic exercise and provides personal encouragement. It also privides an avenue for my family, for friends, and my students past and present to follow an adventure. Perhaps it will provide some small entertainment for some and an opportunity for my personal reflection. Having visited China this past summer, and having ... read more

Thought I would continue my previous entry about my visit to China this past summer. No doubt, there are some of you who might consider a similar adventure, preparing to teach in China after retirement, and I would like to give as much encouragement as possible. I have heard from individuals, who are presently involved in teaching English in various places in China, and I have great appreciation for all of the commentary. Please keep the many comments coming, and feel free to quiz me on any of your thoughts and concerns. ..... My first day in China was filled with sights and sounds and smells that will never leave. The streets I travelled were not the China of Beijing or Shangai nor Hong Kong, but it was a "smaller" city of about 5 million, ... read more

Having visited China in July of 2005, I am giving thought to some of the challenges that will face me as I prepare the journey. No book I have read about China, nor any conversations I have had with Chinese Nationals in Miami prepared me for that first visit. Perception will never equate to the reality surrounding a foreigner on first arrival. I was not attached to any tour group, but made a personal visit and so was given the opportunity of a very personal experience. There was no set schedule, only the one agreed to by Mr. Lee and myself. I arrived at night, via NW Airlines, in Shanghai. Mr. Lee met me with a van and its driver, but I was exhausted from the trip, Miami-Detroit-Tokyo-Shanghai. Mr. Lee and I have had many ... read more
