Our main activity for today was going on a culinary tour of Little Havana. We were able to sleep in and then navigated our way to Domino Park to find the one available free parking space. Soon, we met up with our guide Marie and 12 other guests. As we walked through little Havana, Marie shared historical concepts and her explanation of Cuban cuisine including fruits and vegetables. Our first stop was to enjoy an empanada and a Cuban coffee. Both were very good. Following that, we visited a cigar store and were able to see the process of rolling a Cuban style cigar. We were shocked at how expensive they were but learned about various grades of tobacco and how cigar smokers progress from mild to more strong blends. As we continued on the tour, ... read more

June 9, 2017 - Continued When we last wrote, we were preparing to begin our evening on a sunset cruise. By the time we got to the check-in station, it was raining cats and dogs... the six toed kind. It turned out our cruise had already been cancelled, but they called back to Lansing to let us know. So, it was time for plan B. We walked through some nearly flooded streets to a highly-recommended restaurant called "Two Friends." We had a great dinner including seafood and conch fritters and, because we were somewhat early, our drinks and appetizers were half price due to happy hour. So we took that as two for one. After dinner, we decided to check out Captain Tony's, the original site of Hemingway haunt Sloppy Joe's. The walls were covered with ... read more

Hello! For some reason our blog site was blocked as they suspected us to be spammers. After an email back and forth, the site has now been restored. Below are posts from our first two days pasted from Word. --- June 8, 2016 This morning, we began with a pick-up at 5:30 a.m. Though traffic was heavy, we made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare and enjoyed a sit down breakfast at an Italian restaurant. Our flight didn’t take off quite on time. When the pilot said we would be taking off within the next two minutes, there were still 20 people in the aisle waiting to get to their seats. After the “flight attendants, please prepare for takeoff” announcement we sat for roughly half an hour listening to a 14 month ... read more

Planning, packing, animals and we are on our way!!! A couple of you guys might have followed my last blog (www.mytb.org/starlingsacrossthepond) and I was pleased with it but maaaan it was a commitment! The main reason I start, continued and completed the blog was because it was just an amazing once in a lifetime trip and I really wanted to share it with folks. I have to say that as much of a task as it was it was very well received, grammar errors, incorrect spelling and maybe in incorrect fact or two (whatevs - I gave it a good effort). So, here I am, attempting to document another two week Starling adventure. This trip has taken us almost six months to plan so here's the rundown. We will begin in New York, New York then ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » St Augustine May 25th 2017

The long journey begins with a few baby steps. The original plan was to leave tomorrow and head directly to Atlanta. But that turned out to be close to 500 miles, a bit much for the first day. So we decided to leave a day early and head for St Augustine to take at least 100 miles off the Atlanta trip. Besides, we were getting anxious to get on the road, so why not. The morning began uneventfully, with Jody convinced, of course, that we had forgotten something. So far we haven't found anything forgotten, but it's too late now. We generally avoid interstates whenever possible as battling for the road with 18-wheelers at 80+ mph is not really my idea of a relaxing drive. So we headed out FL434 to FL419 until we turned onto ... read more

It's our last day in Orlando. The Goldwing is packed and we are ready to go! First stop tomorrow will be St Augustine, FL. Jody and I can hardly wait to hit the road again. We both must have a little gypsy blood. Jimmy will take care of the house, Cindy and Julia will take care of the hamsters, and Bill will take care of the lawn. Jody and I will take care of the fun. We will follow the same format as our last trip (still visible for a little while at www.travelpod.com/members/rickr53). I just found this travel blog site a couple of days ago when I found out that Travelpod was going out of business. It looks like I can do all the same things as my last blog, and I will post every ... read more

This year, we had to get a new travel blog service; the one we used last year has been discontinued. So once again, I am going to post a blog or two before we leave to check it out and familiarize myself with it. Neil is still in Colorado helping Tom until he is able to walk without crutches; then Tom has to find a new job. Hopefully, Neil will be able to leave there in a couple weeks, get home, finish his Aunt Liz's deck (only a couple days work left to do), and get packed up to head north. This year, my hope is to visit family and old friends in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. Also, I am hoping that we can go up to Campobello Island, New Brunswick, to camp at Herring ... read more

We arrived in Miami, after the five hour flight from Lima, to pouring rain. We'd had an early morning departure from Lima, early enough that the taxi ride from our hotel to the airport only took half an hour rather than the expected one hour. Naturally though, when we got to the airport half the world was already there, eager, like us, to fly off to places new. Before I recount what we've been doing in Miami, a word or two about taxi drivers in Lima. They're mad! Everyone drives as though there's no tomorrow; hardly anyone bothers to use a blinker to let other drivers know they intend to change lanes, indeed they just whip in and out between other cars who are speeding along with only a hairs breath between each other. Miraculously it ... read more

Wir besuchten den „Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve“ in Ft. Myers zwei Mal. Lusti... read more
