Arriving early at LA airport, we managed to get on a flight 1.5 hours earlier to Miami which was cool. With the time difference between LA and Miami, and the length of flight, it was still late afternoon by the time we got there. It was a quick blat in the taxi to our hotel by the port and then we spent the afternoon hanging out at the very cool Bayside Marketplace which was nicely located right opposite our hotel! There was heaps going on - live bands, lots of lights, cool restaurants and Margharita bars! The difference between Miami and other parts of the States was immediately obvious. The Creole food and music, the heat and huge variety of people and accents mark Miami as quite unique among the states and a very cool place ... read more

It's 2:41am. I will be waking up in about five hours to catch the first leg of my flights (MIA--LAX). I'll spend some quality time with my uncle, aunt, and cousins before heading out to Tokyo on Monday. So, starting Monday, I plan to get 'travel' bloggin'. I can't believe it's been... about five years since I've been inside Japan. Things change so quickly there, I wonder if my incredible memories have faded into the loud taito station arcade games, into the questionable political situation with a new prime minister, into the new construction that overtook the old buildings which I loved to ride my red bike around so much? One thing's that my great buddy Max will be there. The Falcon of the Yamanote...should I explain that? Nah. Anyhow, time to get some rest. Keep ... read more

Today is Tuesday, Dec 5th, and it's freezing in the Midwest and Northeast. The holiday's are in full swing. Shoppers are herding through the malls and jousting for parking spaces. Christmas cards are being filled out, addresses being found, and packages are being shipped. Driveways are being shoveled, running noses are being sniffled, and diets are being slackened. It's a great time of year. The best. Even if you live in the northern latitudes, the weather goes with the season. Of course, I live in Miami. As I write this it's 76 degrees and the sun couldn't be any brighter. The windows are all open and the breeze is lazily keeping me cool. If you've ever spent Christmas in the tropics, you know it's sort of an odd feeling, especially if you grew up in a ... read more

Today we took a trip to the Florida Everglades. And literally, that's pretty much all we did - we spent more time travelling in the minibus than we did actually in the Everglades. En route, we even crawled along the hard shoulder of the interstate (which I'm sure can't be legal) for about 15 minutes until the driver spotted an iguana, which he was very proud of. I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd seen much better iguanas than that just days before. We arrived at the Everglades Adventure Park (or whatever it was called) at roughly the same time as the entire population of Tokyo. First of all, we saw a show (of sorts) by one of the park ranger guys who spoke about the difference between crocodiles and alligaters demonstrating on the ... read more

I'm back! Had an early ish flight from Quito to Miami, and my flight being delayed by an hour (I swear that airport is cursed) did nothing to help my mood. Especially since there is pretty much nothing to do at Quito airport and what little there was I couldn't check out as I was quarantined in the American Airlines lounge. Security measures apparently, but I'm not sure who the measures were to protect. Arrived at Miami airport at around 3, then had a 2 hour wait to get to passport control. Tired and emotional, what I did not need was my mum jumping on my back as soon as I got through the arrivals section, scraing the crap out of me. Still, it was good to see the family again, I've not been away this ... read more

There was still light left in Florida. I spent the last hours of daylight on the beach, gazing at the sun in the horizon. This was the life that wished for many years. All this time, I've been flying planes for commercial and private purposes. As the sun set in the horizon, I knew time was up and I had to get back to the plane at the airport. A taxi dropped me off at the airport around 8:00pm. I met my friends at the plane, where they sit quiet, waiting for my arrival. They seem to be hungry so we went out and for an hour, ate at the nearest McDonalds. We went back to the plane and got it ready. We all packed our bags and headed off. Our next destination is New ... read more

So, now we were back in the US for a whole 2 days! We started off by getting our rent-a-car from what looked like a very sketchy outfit called Miami Rent-a-car, but which ended up being great. There were no cars available from any of the main dealers as it was the weekend of the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show. Anyway, after picking up our little car we headed to pick up James’ children. We went straight to a fantastic lunch at Delicias de España where I had a great tortilla Española, along with tasting some of the gazpacho, chorizo, jamon Serrano and other goodies that had arrived. We had a bunch of chores to do over the two days, so we started on those then took Nico to his Karate class. He is amazing for 6! ... read more
