“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.” Ralph Waldo Emerson It is Nov 19th and Glenys, Chad and I arrived in Savannah in the early afternoon. Chad slept in the car while Glenys and I went out and had a drink at a pub down by the water. The hostel we wanted to book into did not open until 5pm and we still had another hour to kill. Glenys and I decided to drive up to a few hotels and see what rate we could get. We eventually got a good rate at a motel that was about a 5 minute drive from downtown so we decided to take it. We settled in and did a little grocery shopping … can ... read more

Miami, My camera was giving me problems so I only took a few pics on this visit. It definitely feels like I haven’t left Latin America when I arrived to Miami. The people and culture is mostly Cuban and when you arrive at the airport, people working there will speak to you in Spanish, especially if you look Hispanic. They will assume that you speak it, and it’s actually one of the complaints that my friend, Sabastian, had living there. I decided to visit him on my way back from Belize. It was nice to catch up. Miami can offer you a lot: the Spanish culture, the music, a great beach and warm weather (if you like the sun), but the city can be also be superficial. All in all, it’s a place that you must ... read more

Pete's sister asked us to bring Jonner and AJ this day to take them to Jungle Island. It is on the causeway going into Miami Beach, right across from the cruise ships. The boys had day off from school, so off we went..We picked up Tia Lu, went to lunch at Mc Donalds, where we made sure Tia was in between the boys, you know no fighting. Then off we went to the park. It is kind of a small zoo. Hope you enjoy the pictures and 2 videos.... read more

Leaving London on a cold, wet and wintry morning was probably fitting of what I was getting away from. Sitting on the tarmac in my extra wide seat catered for larger Americans I left all the stress of London life behind me (and maybe a few essentials as well) and looked forward to what is going to be an excting 6 months. Its one of the most exciting parts of the trip: having absolutely no idea what you are going to do for the next half a year. But first stop is Miami. To my surprise my hostel was smack bang in the middle of the party district on South Beach where there was action aplenty. It was decked out with new furniture and looked like it would be the perfect place to venture out late ... read more

Our final week in England saw us head to the Peak District as a precursor to our annual visit to friends in Sheffield, Andy and Jo. We stayed in a YHA again, practising doing without 300 thread count sheets and en-suite bathrooms, and it was fine really - albeit we skipped the dinner offering and headed to the 'only pub in the village' the Miners Arms for what tutned out to be delish food - my venison was excellent, so full recommendation for this place for eats if you are in the neighbourhood.... which was over-endowed it seemed with big posh country homes like Chatsworth, which looked beautiful in the brochures but we didn't visit. Would have liked to visit as I am sure the memories would have been great, but no time on this trip....... ... read more

Miami Beach We don’t have any photos of Miami, and there is a reason for that. I have heard raving revues about the area but honestly I must have been in the wrong Miami, either that or those people were on bloody commission. It looks like the town took a vote to banish all decorators and street cleaners as it looks like no maintenance has been carried out since the Scarface film crew left. This disbandment of professions may also account for the chronic number of homeless people. If you get a photo without one in it you must have been in a toilet cubicle. The beach in fairness looked amazing but the water was so rough that it was more or less empty. We did have one amazing meal on the beach front and a ... read more

Well everyone, we made it to Miami. Arrived here on Wednesday afternoon, dumped our bags in our room and hit the beach straight away. It didn't take us long though before we went on search for an Outback restaurant. It had actually changed location since the last time we were here, however we managed to find it - we had to walk about 10 blocks, but I think Boucs was willing to walk 10 miles! We came back to our hostel (The Tropics, 1550 Collins Ave) and had a little nap, then 2 hours later decided to purchase a small bottle of Bacardi, which we licked in about an hour. We ended up in a club called Rock Bar which is awesome. It's free to get in, but you have to go in with women, as ... read more

Soooooo Miami beach - a necessary stop on the OneWorld ticket. Not exactly the highlight for either of us so far! A mediocre beach and a bit of a scruffy area. Also we are quite convinced that they may have closed a mental institution in the area recently judging by the number of crazies in town. For example no eyebrows raised when man bicycles through the mall with a chicken on his handlebars or when a man is shouting in the street wearing a dress or when man takes a snake for a walk. Hmmmm. Highlights of South beach are the art deco buildings everywhere which does have a great visual impact and also Jerry´s diner which had the hugest menu and portions we´d ever seen - YUM. As hurricane Gustav and tropical storm Hanna were ... read more

Well well well. 3 deep holes! Not so funny to begin with but Tuesday of this week felt like all we were in was deep holes! What started as a cheeky conversation about the whereabouts of Shanny's passport, swiftly turned into a gut jolting realisation that she had couriered said document to Sydney via UPS Express Delivery.....no joke.....imminent departure was two days away..... So T minus zero days and Steve is on the flight to Miami on his tod, waving bye bye to Shanny at the door just before 6:00am this morning (she follows next week - direct to Rio where the real adventure begins) Moving swiftly on to: the complete lack of legroom on BA flights....I currently still have a dead right shin (DVT beckons) and this is four hours after landing. Aspirin anyone? So, ... read more
