Blog 02-06-20 Searching for the Birds For 2 mornings the sunrises have been gorgeous. I have to get up at 6:15 am to see the vibrant reds and yellows then the skies dull a little until the sun actually appears. The actual sunrise is 7:20 am so for this magic hour I am outside enjoying the ever changing drama. Sometimes the birds fly by or actually land and add their part to each picture. Pictures Tuesday I went to Okcloknee River State Park that is about 15 miles up the road to view all the birds that frequent most state parks. I took Watson so we could walk around the park and he wouldn't be cooped up in the camper. I didn't see one bird! I did see a really neat launching ramp for kayaks, you ... read more

blog 02-03-20 Wakulla Springs The weather forecast is bleak later in the week so now is the time to get to the places I wanted to visit. Wakulla Springs has been inhabited by humans for nearly 15,000 yrs starting with Paleo-Indian times. The spring is a first magnitude spring with a flow of 200-300 Million gallons per day and forms the Wakulla River. It was once so clear that glass bottom boats were a regular attraction but now the waters are too cloudy to see more than 20 ft. below. The water flows from a cave connected to the FL aquifer system and 190 ft into that cave mastodon bones have been seen. The spring was purchased by Edward Bell in 1934 and developed as an attraction focusing on the preservation of wildlife and surrounding habitat. ... read more

blog 02-02-20 Happy Groundhog Day A lot has happened since my last blog so I will try to give the Readers Digest version. I wrapped up my stay at Thousand Trails with my girlies, had a wonderful visit from my Indianapolis cousins Dave and Nancy Mallon, went back to Camping World to have the carburetor replaced in my generator and headed west. I have included a portrait of my friends and their dogs, assorted pictures from TT and some pictures from my current campground. When I left TT to go to Lake City and generator repairs I was going to spend the night in the parking lot at Walmart but at 1 pm there was a crowd already and a very busy store so I called the campground that I would be going to the next ... read more

As I said in the previous blog we really scored at this campground, our view is amazing and everything is so nice here. We drove through town, purchased some bait, visited the bottle house, the world's smallest police station which was a telephone booth (see pics), and saw Crooked River Lighthouse from the outside. Once we returned we all went to the beach to hang out and fish. The sand was surprisingly white and powdery. The best part is since it is a private beach you are able to bring your pet. Daisy was ready to come home at dark since the bugs were driving her crazy, but Nate could not bring himself to leave the beach. He caught so many nice size fish and a sting ray too, but unfortunately none were keepers. Nate finally ... read more

Today we continued south on I-65, the drive itself was not too bad, but there were a few accidents that were causing 30 minute plus delays so we had to get off the interstate and allow Google Maps to reroute us. We drove straight through, other than stopping for gas which allowed us to get to the next campground early, Cherry Blossom RV ($22/night Passport). This campground has the fastest Wi-Fi I have seen on the entire trip and cable, oh and it is by any restaurant you could desire. We finally got to eat our O'Charley's, after that we took Daisy to JcPenney's to finish off her school shopping and then back to the trailer to catch up on the blog. It is nice to not worry to much about the route we take now ... read more

We left Daytona on Tuesday morning and headed directly into some really bad weather. It looked like our window of opportunity for travel would be from late morning into the evening and that's just about how it worked out. We made the 5 hour run to Carrabelle Beach under fast moving clouds, gusty winds and a few passing showers, got set up in our new site on the Gulf of Mexico, got dinner over and sat down to watch the storms on TV. It hit here a little later, around 2:00 am. After seeing pictures of an RV park in Louisiana get torn to shreds by a tornado it was a little unnerving to feel the camper rocking back and forth on its four stilts and four tires while the national weather service had us under ... read more

Thursday morning we left our anchorage in Cedar Keys and continued north, reaching Steinhatchee by mid afternoon. This time we went upriver to River Haven Marina, where we headed for showers before walking down the road to Fiddlers Restaurant for an excellent supper. Then next door to the liquor store to stock up on essentials before walking back to the boat. After dark the no-see-ums came out in force and nearly drove us crazy. I finally sprayed the screens and that eased things somewhat. This morning we were up at 6 and out before 7 for the long trip across the Gulf of Mexico. The weather was fine, with cooler temps and light winds. We had a bit of a following sea, swells mostly, but they would hit us on the rear quarter and push us ... read more

We dawdled around Tuesday morning, waiting for winds to die down and temps to climb. We finally headed out late in the morning. We went south on the marked channel, then went through Government Cut on St. George Island. The sun was shining and the water was beautiful in the Gulf of Mexico. Dolphins swam by to greet us and the winds were mostly blocked by the island. We anchored not far off the beach by St. George Island State Park, then had Sara and Trevor raft up after dropping their stern anchor. We hoped this would keep us facing the waves instead of facing the wind and taking the waves on our beam. It worked for a while, but after we finished supper, the waves got bigger and we really started rocking. Both boats were ... read more

We have a very cool itinerary to bring us home from our 2009-2010 winter RV trip. Our direct flight from Albany to Tampa was uneventful. Our drive up I75 to Ocala wet. We "dry camped" in the wet weather and woke up to a sunny day with a half dozen horses staring into the RV. On The Road We've learned to love those dotted lines on AAA maps. They indicate scenic byways, and Route 27 from Ocala to Williston is just that! The drive is beautiful. It’s spring and shrubs like "red buds" are in bloom as part of the landscaping of lovely horse farms all along the way. Going beyond Williston (neat and orderly) the scene becomes “USA at its rural, sincere best.” Ranching, logging, fishing, oystering and shrimping are the rugged industries. There are ... read more
