Tuesday morning we returned to Manitou Springs to see the Manitou Springs Cliff Dwellings. The cliff dwellings were moved to this alcove location in Manitou Springs from McElmo Canyon in 1907. (There is continued dispute about how accurate the reconstruction is, but if one is not going to Mesa Verde, this is a good alternative.) The dwellings are very interesting to visit and they do give one an idea of how the Pueblo peoples lived in the 12th century. They are fairly well interpreted. In addition, there are beds of plants used by the Pueblos and other Native Americans placed around the dwellings and these are excellently interpreted. Down from the cliff dwellings are a gift shop and museum building. The museum has a number of displays on Pueblo daily life and material culture. The museum ... read more

Driving from Cheyenne to Colorado Springs on I-25 took about three and a half hours. We stayed in Colorado Springs on Sunday night. Colorado Springs is right at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and close to Pikes Peak. Our objective was to travel to the summit of Pikes Peak, 14,115 feet (4302 m), on Monday. Pikes Peak is a poplar destination which one can ascend by train, by road or by hiking. The Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway was our choice. (It is a popular one. We made reservation long in advance). The cog railway is similar to the mountain railways in Switzerland and very much like the Pilatusbahn we rode in 2019. But the summit of Pikes Peak is more than twice as high as Pilatus and the base, at Manitou Springs, is much ... read more

We have gone to Colorado Springs, Colorado numerous times. I love the mountains and the great landscaping it offers. There is no shortage of fun activities either or the cultural diversity. However, this last time we went we were invited to go spend some time in Manitou Springs. This is a lesser known area but has plenty to offer! We enjoyed hiking the trails and took some amazing pictures. Some of them look like they could be postcards. We went to a dinner theater with amazing food and plenty of singing and dancing. I loved the way they pulled people from the audience to be part of what they were doing on stage. I didn’t want to go up there but sure did enjoy the look of excitement on the faces of others as they did ... read more

Sept 19 – Friday – It’s 73 in Manitou with 26% humidity. I have considered that I am only about 100 yards from the Sign for Manitou Springs and so for all practical purposes I am in Manitou Springs weather-wise and attitude wise since it is up on the foothills whereas Colorado Springs is in the city on the plain. And a city is a city no matter where they are (at least in the US), people who live there are more concerned about making money than anything else. Which is understandable as it is so much more expensive to live in a city. So I will just stay up here on my perch in Manitou. If I could find a good deal on a 2 bedroom house in Manitou or Old Colorado City in a ... read more

Monday, 23 June, 2014 We left Mesa Verde, driving east on Hwy 160, passing through beautifully green valleys on our way to Durango. After all the desert we've seen, it's nice to see lots of green again, even if only for a few miles. It became dry again past Durango. The traffic was heavy at Pagosa Springs, which is a touristy town with hot springs and other resortish offerings. Then we started climbing, gradually at first, but with steeper going the last 8 miles before reaching Wolf Creek Pass at 10,856'. At times we had difficulty maintaining 30 mph, but it was much easier going down the other side (imagine that.) At the Great Sand Dunes National Park we discovered their campgrounds were all full, so we drove back 8 miles to San Luis State Park, ... read more

Day 2 - Sunday Aug 19th, 2012 We got up at 6:30 A.M. MST since we had gone to bed so early. We took showers, got dressed, then had the continental breakfast served by the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast we went back to the room to finished packing, and then I took the suitcases outside to load the car. There was a biker outside about to leave and we started talking. He was real friendly. I have notice when traveling, other travelers are so friendly. I enjoy talking with them finding out where they are going and where they have been. We left the motel and headed to Clayton Lake State Park to see the dinosaur tracks. It was a nice drive out there. The park charges $5 for day use of the park. There ... read more

NOTE: To enlarge any picture, click on the picture. Day 3 - Monday Aug 20th, 2012 We got up early and checked out of the motel. When I started the car, the brake light was not light however there was another light lit up on the dashboard. I didn’t know what it meant so got out the owner’s manual to look it up. The light wasn’t listed. Since it wasn’t listed I didn’t think it was anything serious however I was concerned because I knew once we were in Wyoming we would not be close to any Hertz dealers. We left the motel and went to Denny’s for breakfast. After breakfast we headed back to downtown Manitou Springs to the Pikes Peak Cog Train station. We had reservation on the 9:20 train. It has been at ... read more

As we take I-25 south we normally pass multiple freight trains on both the east and west sides of the highway. This trip was no different and we stopped to watch a 120 car coal train head south. Once we got to Colorado Springs we headed off for the train from Manitou Springs to the summit of Pikes Peak (14,110 ft) takes 3 hours round trip. We've taken this ride many times on the highest cog railway in the world. The temperature in Manitou was about 80 degrees F when we left and was about 39 degrees F at the summit. We always enjoy warm high altitude donuts at the summit to warm us up a bit. Nothing like a little winter in August. Saw some marmots, 1 deer, beautiful mountains, and a few great rainbows ... read more

Drove up to Manitou Springs to get some pictures of the snow. It was snowing pretty heavy and started snowing heavier so I took some pictures and drove back to the hotel. I had intended to eat at PJ’s Bistro but snow was starting to accumulate on the road so I decided I had better get back down the hill to the hotel. I guess I will eat the second half of the pizza I got yesterday and watch another movie I rented from Blockbusters yesterday and wait out the storm.... read more
