In 1900 Elmer Riggs, from what is now known as the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago (in Riggs' day it was the Field Columbian Museum), discovered the bones of a 70 foot long, 30 ton Apatosaurus at Dinosaur Hill. He returned in 1901 with a crew and removed what turned out to be a major part of this dinosaur. Riggs transported the skeleton to Chicago where it has been on exhibit since 1908. In 1991 and 1992 local paleontologists with mining crews reentered and expanded the mine on the southeastern side of Dinosaur Hill. They found tools used by Riggs' crew and four Apatosaurus bones (three tail chevrons and a rib segment). Location: Highway 340, South of I-70 (Fruita) The one mile scenic hiking trail goes past the location of the Apatosaurus collected in ... read more

Hej derhjemme!

Shortly after entering Coolorado, we turned off the highway for lunch at a reststop, where we immediately encountered this dramatic expanse of metal teepees and buffaloes: a 21st interpretation of the horse tribes--such as the feared Comanchee--which ranged from Southern Colorado to West Texas. We listened to more of "Empire of the Summer Moon" as we traversed the Rocky Mountains on our way to Grand Junction...another nine-hour drive on our second day. Once in GJ, we enjoyed a walk along GJ's friendly downtown pedestrian mall that features an eclectic display of permanent and temporary art sculptures. Before leaving GJ, a drive to the Colorado National Monument---where we hiked with friends in the spring of 2011.... read more

Early start today, we need to have our cases outside the room by 06:00!! And are to meet the rest of the group in reception at 07:00 We get up at 05:00 and finish off our packing, get the cases outside the room and go down for breakfast at 06:00. The hotel has put on a special buffet breakfast for us for $18:00 After breakfast we head to reception to find that the train has been delayed by an hour, so we wait around catching up on the newspapers. We eventually get onto the coach and are taken to the “makeshift” railway station where we have another short wait; we stand outdoors to get some of the early morning sunshine. We board the train at around 09:30 and leave around 10:00. Just after leaving and getting ... read more

I woke up with a load more hives - they have now spread to my legs and lower back. I went to the Pharmacy for a diagnosis, but they had no idea and suggested I try Benadryl for the itching. The Benadryl is helping with the itching but its not helping with staying awake. I felt exhausted an hour after taking two tablets! We went wine tasting at luchtime - (to a vineyard in Palisade, called Grand River Vineyards). We tried 8 wines (for $3.50) and it was well worth it. The info they gave us was great and the wines were really good. I got tipsy and accidentally spent $70 on wine and Port. We then went to sit by the river for lunch and then walked the River Park Trail (a 3 mile walk around the ... read more

I woke up with lots of hives today. They are on my arms and back and area really itchy. I am baffled as it was far too cold for mosquitoes and no one else has bed bugs. We had an early start as it was an 8 hour drive to Grand Junction, so we said goodbye to our strange motel owner, (Elton Johann) who said once again that we should visit Sedona (meant to be one of the most beautiful towns in Colorado, thanks to the huge red rocks surrounding the town, where the cheapest house costs $2,000,000) It looked gorgeous but it would add another couple of hours onto our journey, so we moved on. On yhe drive, we experienced all the Colorado seasons...sun, rain, thunderstorm, snow, hail... I am used to this after last ... read more

Saturday 9th October Grand Junction (Colorado) - Flagstaff (Arizona) - 436 miles. We stayed over in a Motel 6 again and they are cheap and cheerful and only 35 quid for the room which is good considering they are clean and the showers are great plus it cost us 3 pounds to do our laundry!!! Clean socks and pants for another ten days!!! wooohooo!!! We managed to avoid the traffic this morning and took off In a southerly direction through Colorado, skimming Utah again!!! then into Arizona. I dont know why but the route we've taken has got us crossing the Utah state line again before heading into Arizona. Ive checked the map and yeh we seem to have driven down the Utah state line almost. Neverheed we carrried on down the road a little and ... read more

After visiting the canyons, arches and curves of the Colorado River near Moab, Utah, we traveled east to Grand Junction Colorado to visit two dear relatives; Livie and Henry are living siblings of my deceased mother; rip 1971. Henry hosted us to a delightful dinner at his favorite restaurant, and Livie hosted us to a delicious lunch in her and husband Don’s home. It was such a pleasure to reunite with these folk; aunt and uncles on my mom’s side of the family. We told stories, maybe some fibs, and had a darn good, grinning time. I grinned and laughed until my cheeks hurt. Nan, Shad and I found some time to drive up to the Colorado National Monument. That narrow, curvy road was a little scary when driving on the outside lane, near the drop ... read more

Day 14 Salt Lake City to Grand Junction, CO We took our time getting up today. It was so nice to sleep in a bed and have a hot shower. Around noon we ventured out into the streets of Salt Lake City, UT. For those of you that don’t know, Salt Lake City is the Holy spot for the Mormons. Brigham Young led a group of followers across the country and brought them to Salt Lake. The first thing that we noticed was that the streets were so ....HUGE....we read in our handy dandy AAA guide that the streets were designed to be “wide enough for a team of four oxen and a covered wagon to turn around”. We also noticed that the place was empty! Granted it was a Saturday, but....it was spooky empty! The ... read more
