first on today's list was the Pueblo Air Museum. This is the International B-24 Museum, one problem, they don't have a B-24. They do have a very nice B-29. B-29s are very cool planes. But no B-24. They also have a lot of other planes and cool stuff Including a C-119 which is the type of plane used in the 2004 version of Flight of the Pheonix. Next was the Colorado Prison Museum. This Museum isn't housed in the actual Prison because... well... it's still a prison. So the museum is located in the old Woman's Prison next door. Then I headed towards Duraango when all of a sudden I saw a sign... read more

Durango So it’s up at 6.30am for an early start for the 200 mile trip to Durango where we are booked to take the classic narrow gauge steam train ride to Silverton & back along the mountain passes. We are going back into Colorado. We take the road to Kayenta 24 miles away and recall that it was here that we stopped 10 years ago to get a punctured tyre fixed by a kind garage owner on a Sunday – all other shops were closed. It definitely got us out of a spot. It’s pretty straight forward on the 160 all the way. We take it in turns to drive – 1 hour shifts which works well. We pass 4 Corners monument (not sure why they call it a monument?). It is the only point in ... read more

OK, we took over 170 pictures on the ride from Durango to Silverton and back. Instead of trying to select 3-5 for the previous blog, I opted to do a separate one of mostly pictures. But no picture, not even video, would be able to capture the smell of the coal burning car, the feel of cinders in the eye, the spray of steam as the engine released pressure, nor the bounce, sway, and rocking we experienced for 3.5 hours up and then 3.5 hours back. We sat in a "cattle" car, open sided, but facing out. Yes, colder; but, more leg room, wider butt room and better views. When we got back, we definitely needed a shower for the coal dust and to warm up. But what a wonderful experience!! When we got to Silverton, ... read more

We went to leave Julie and Geno but had two glitches: first, the water hose was frozen...solid. So I carefully unscrewed it, carried it around to the sunny side of the coach, and put it on a dark tarp to thaw. It took about an hour, but melted enough that we could blow in one end and have ice shards come out the other. Then I re-attached it to the faucet and put about 2/3 of a tank of fresh in the RV so if it got cold again, I wouldn't need to use an outside hose. The other glitch was our transmission: it was hard to shift. Geno called a neighbor who was a mechanic and he came right over. Seems we were down a bit on transmission fluid, so he got a special funnel ... read more

Well if our stay in Durango was anything- it was HOT! The kind of hot you just can't escape unless your indoors in AC, and we have no indoors!! We have found it hard to find our energy to do anything! The sun and heat drain you for sure. Today we hit the trails early to explore some of Durango's famous single tracks! Maybe its the skier in me but I find it really fun to have all the trials labeled with green circles, blue squares and black diamonds! I also was pretty proud to have accomplished two black diamonds, one climb and one decent - with only a handful of 'dabs' (that means stopping or putting your foot down) I think I'll miss these trails a lot when I hit New England's rocky territory. But ... read more

....quick update as we sit here in the shade of our campsite. The sun is HOT here and the elevation high. We got into Durango ready to ride and explore this adventure city...however have found it a bit hard to find our energy. The elevation definitely plays a role and the sun sucks every bit of energy you have. We quickly found the Animas River that runs through town, and then quickly realized why kayaking and rafting are such big sports here. The river is raging and not the river you just hang out by- Yet fun as ever for Miss Kona!! The dog park is conveniently located between the river and mountain side and there is plenty of room to roam. There are always lots of dogs around but she is head set on the ... read more

Whew! A lot has occurred since the last entry. Early December, as Phil headed to Phu Quoc, Vietnam, and I made my way to Australia, honey moon part one had officially ended. We both buckled down in the winter and returned to Colorado—Phil working like crazy, and me doing the best to fill in with random jobs. I fit in a quick trip to Hawaii and a couple of trips to Pennsylvania, and we tried to get in as much skiing as possible, despite the minimal winter that Colorado had. We are happy to report we are back on the road again. And unfortunately the road is how we started off the trip, rather than the taking flight, as we had intended. Last Wednesday, April 10th, Phil and I arrived at the Denver airport with bags ... read more

Geo: 37.2737, -107.879Our volunteer assignment wasn't until noon, so we had a leisurely morning. A breakfast of oatmeal started us out, then we took a stroll along the shore of the lake -- just gorgeous. Such a beautiful morning. We packed up, and made our way up to the resort early. We gave ourselves time to go buy some sandwiches for lunch (which we planned to put in the cooler), though we decided to just eat lunch early. Our assignment was as course marshalls for the amateur ride, from Durango to the resort and back. Keep the riders from crossing the highway until the nice state trooper says it's safe.Back at the car, as we were applying sunscreen prior to standing in the sun for 3 hours, we saw a Nissan official race vehicle pull in, stop, and ... read more

Geo: 37.2737, -107.879We headed out from home around 7 am, and dropped the girls off at Shylo (with no carsickness from Penny -- yay!).Down I-25, and over to Durango -- about a 6 1/2 hour drive. We had some audio books checked out from the library to keep us amused (including a French tutorial). Rolled into Durango around 3 pm, and headed over to Ft. Lewis College to check out the pre-race festival. Our attention was immediately drawn to a large banner advertising race radios -- !! We asked around, but nobody seemed to know what they were, where they were, IF they were..... Got some merchandise, checked in for our volunteer positions, and were on our way to try to find a campsite. After a quick stop at the grocery store, we aimed for the first Forest ... read more
