We left Santa Fe and New Mexico behind and quickly headed into Colorado, which I made our 15th State already! Within 15 minutes of these rolling green hills and mountains, trees and the vast openness of it all, I was in love. I could already see myself moving out here if I had half the chance. The peace, the tranquillity and the view were already visible and clear to see. It was all amazing and I didn’t waste time telling the others once or twice. After a lovely picnic style lunch in amongst the small mountains and food shopping, we headed on to Mesa Verde, a 12th Century city built entirely into the cliffs. The tribe or 'People' – the Pueblonians – were so advanced for their time but suddenly up roots for unknown reasons and ... read more

Today we spent the day riding the narrow gauge railroad from Durango to Silverton roundtrip. This is a 3 1/2 hour ride one way due to the steep grades and the dropping off and taking on of hikers at about the midway point. While we have taken this ride many times before, the scenery including the mountains and the Animas River is always beautiful. The train crosses the river about 6 times along the way to Silverton. The weather today started out cool but by the time we got to Silverton it was nice and sunny. While in Silverton we got a quick bite to eat and then walked around town and watched the train that came in before us leave. We also got to see a special train come with a vista car at the ... read more

We left Golden this morning heading over 300 miles southwest to Durango. Great weather, beautiful mountain views, and many miles of isolated roadway and small towns. Sean watched videos and Drew had the pleasure of working on his Algebra math packet before school starts. Fun times on a 6 hour journey! The balcony of our hotel overlooks the Animas River - very peaceful at this time of year. Excited to say that we will be here for 3 days to enjoy the four corners area of Colorado. We are just a walk away from the Durango train station so you know we had to walk over to see what was going on. Made it just in time to see the last steam train arrive from Silverton and watch a diesel switcher move some cars around. Stopped ... read more

So we are getting ready to depart tomorrow for Mesa Verde National Park and a stay in Ouray Colorado. I am working on some lamb stew to take with us for the trip, we have fridge and microwave in Durango and a full kitchen in Ouray so we thought we would bring some food to help defray the cost of my new $500.00 panoramic camera I bought for the trip (hello vacations spawn more impulsive spending then Erika’s Mom at the holidays). Of course we have to go get new tires tomorrow because mine are worn badly, it turns out that the shop I take it too for cheap oil changes didn’t really rotate my tires, I had the feeling those snake oil salesmen were full of sh*&%$, amazingly the guys at the new shop which ... read more

If you are looking for vacation for everyone, Durango Colorado is your place. You can go from desert to Mountain top in less than an hours drive. We left Texas and drive to Durango via Albuquerque. The drive from Albuquerque to Durango is amazing. You skirt the Santa Fe National Forest and drive through several Indian Reservations. The mountains and rock formations in this area are beautiful. The colors range from tan to red to a deep purple. This was a great surprise that we did not expect. When we arrived in Durango we hit the Walmart for groceries and headed north out of town to Purgatory where we stayed for the week. Purgatory Village by itself was full of activities. Of corse it is a snow ski resort by Winter, but in the Summer they ... read more

Oh my goodness guys......I don't even know where to start !! The last two days have been so exciting, adventurous and crazy fun for us. We woke up in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Durango, CO this morning at 5:45 and it was freezing cold, in the 40's to be exact. We were loving every minute of it because Tim and I both just love this cool mountain air, it's so crisp and clean which you know is much different than the air back at home. You're probably wondering what in the world would get us up so dang early because at that time I was thinking the same thing. Well, we were off to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to hop on a train and ride it for 3 1/2 hours from Durango ... read more

The Denver & Rio Grande Railway arrived in Durango in August of 1881 and construction on the line began in the fall of that same year. Nine months after construction began, the tracks were completed in July of 1882. The line was constructed to haul silver and gold ore from the mountains, but passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly precious. This scenic line has been in continuous operation ever since. All Aboard! The Durango & Silverton narrow guage railroad is, perhaps, one of the most scenic train rides you will ever take. When one rides this train, he has a choice of three options. The first one is to take the train both ways. The second one is to take the bus from Durango to Silverton and the train back. The third ... read more

Many well traveled mountain vacationers know that often some of the best deals can be found in the lesser known gems or areas of popular destinations. As an avid skier, some of my most favorite experiences are the ones that are just a little bit out of the way - or off the beaten path. One of those favorite spots I like to frequent as often as I can is in southwest Colorado. Durango is a central host to much of the history and beauty that makes Colorado such a distinctive state to visit. Recently I came across a great resource for Durango Lodging deals - the company that is the official central reservations for many destinations with unique experiences - such as Silverton, Cortez, Telluride, Mesa Verde, Salida, Pagosa Springs and several more including options ... read more

From Silverton we headed to Durango. The aspen trees were way passed peak in this area of the state. Temps were definitely colder. The road traveled over several mountain passes and Frank enjoyed them because he collected alot of rocks. We didn't stop in Durango, we started home. We had decided to return home by the southern route. We spent the night in New Mexico and pushed home from there - - 3 more days. Next year we need to visit a state closer to the east coast! Needless to say we're always glad to get home and grateful God kept us safe. This trip I had trouble with the travel blog site, downloading photos took hours. That's why I uploaded after we got home. Even at home it took a long time. I may have ... read more

We started our day with a round of 18 holes of golf. It was a bit cold when we started at 8 am but by the time we finished at 12:30 pm it was hot and we got a bit sunburned! The golf was fun if not exactly professional quality (in fact FAR from it!) but we had a blast! After golf we went to a lovely café and had a nice lunch and then Ken and Frank went to JC Penney to buy some pillowcases for the pillows we bought (we foolishly didn't bring ours from home!) and Ricci and I went for a nice stroll down Main Street in Durango. This is a beautiful town on the edge of the Rockies with stunning scenery and a real old west feel. When we got home, ... read more
