Motorhome News from North America 4 Farewell to Arizona 16th February - 24th February 2006 In bright blue skies and a stiff freezing wind we left The Grand Canyon, heading east on Desert View Drive for farewell views, to implant a final image of this vast chasm; unable to resist the temptation to take yet more photographs - just to be sure. It was lunchtime before we arrived at the Cameron Trading Post, a Navajo retail spectacular with a fine restaurant where the Tacos were so big the doggie bag was brought to the table with the meal. Colourful Navajo rugs, beautifully crafted silver and precious stone jewellery, lovely sand paintings and other locally produced crafts are all sold here in opulent surroundings to rival Harrods; so unexpected, miles from nowhere and on the reservation. People ask me what I do in winter when there is no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. - Rogers Hornsby We rose early to get packed and checked out so we could get to SBC Park for our guided tour. We would have got there in plenty of time had we stood on the correct side of the platform and gone in the right direction but we finally made it there at 0950 and were allowed to leave our luggage at the Giants Shop so we could get some breakfast across the road. The tour started at 1030 and was nearly an hour and a half long. Our guide was a true passionate baseball fan who knew almost everything there is to know about the ... read more

I should be studying for midterms, but the only thing on my mind is my flight to LAX on Friday after my classes. Even with my hardest midterm tomorrow, I caught myself swaying away from the Organic Chemistry website and looking at weather.com to see what the 10 day forecast is in Los Angeles. Here is why I worry. I invited my friends with me to go home to Los Angeles with me. Other than the fact that my house cannot hold 3 boys and 2 girls not including myself and my parents, I seem to worry more about the weather. It's spring break, I want warm weather. My nightly prayers are not "let me get a good grade on my midterms," but more "please Lord, give us good weather in Southern California." Of course, when ... read more

We woke up early and the weather was, surprisingly, not too bad. We caught the MUNI to Golden Gate Park for a look around. At our stop I was a little slow off the train and ended up catching it along to the next stop while Jo stood outside the train wondering what I was doing. It was more good luck than good management that the next stop was only a few blocks away so we managed to catch up again soon after. Our first stop at Golden Gate Park was the Japanese Tea Garden - an area of beautiful gardens adorned with Japanese style pagodas and bridges. We were lucky enough to get there before most people so had it pretty much to ourselves for a while. We also walked through the national AIDS memorial ... read more

Couldn't leave the states for three months without getting in some quality time with the best sister anyone could ask for ( most of the time :)) in Sonoma. I'm leaving tomorrow and I don't want to go yet! We've had a lot of good times over the past couple of days; hanging out in the Haight-Ashberry District of San Fran, freakin holding up the Golden Gate Bridge :), mediterranean food and belly dancing, shangri-la, celebrating Jess's 22nd bday early with some really good homemade chicken and veggies and organic marble cake with a slight hint of cardboard :) mixed in, screamin mimi's ice cream, downtown sonoma, political campaining in sebastapool, SSU bball games, RENT!!, spanish dialectolgies...she goes to a really great school in a really great area and has some really great people in her ... read more

LA: 25th - 27th February 2006 As we left the hotel in Las Vegas at 6 am in the morning, the hardcore gamblers were still piling the coins into the slots.... Our flight out of the craziness of Las Vegas to LA got us in around 9am, and we made it to our hostel by 11am (only find that the water would be off until mid afternoon...). We ambled round the corner to wander down Hollywood Blvd (which was a slightly strange anti-climax...think I had this image of spangly lights with the stars on the pavement in some glitzy area, but it's mostly a bit grubby and the stars stretch for miles down this random street that happens to have a few more prestigious tourist attractions in the middle...). We swung by the Kodak Theatre and ... read more

We were up at 0715 to get the cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf to go to Alcatraz. As expected the weather was variable - heavy, heavy rain interrupted by light rain interrupted by a minute of dry. The San Francisco Bay was choppy on the way to the island and it took ten minutes ashore before the rocking sensation stopped - we’d only been on the ferry for five minutes! The best way to get the most out of a trip to Alcatraz is to purchase the audio tour that both guides you and explains what you are looking at as you walk along - complete with sound effects at appropriate times and inmates and cell guards recalling events and life on The Rock. We saw the cells of Al Capone and Robert Stroud “The Birdman ... read more

Old Town San Diego Hotel The first time we went to San Diego was back in 2001. We got a room at a hotel near Sea World in San Diego. It was a discount hotel that had low prices, low amenities, but was located near some great attractions and areas of San Diego. Eating vegan in San Diego is easy. Lots of restaurants to choose from and a variety of options. ... read more
