Six weeks after I return to the US I can say that I am finally adjusting. Don't get me wrong -Its great being back, seeing friends.. living in the most amazingest place ( I wake up every morning to the sound of the Ocean). Nonetheless, I really miss South America. Everyone always talks about the effects of arriving in other countries- the difficulties, the adjustment, the feeling of loneliness, the culture shock. Yet, no one ever speaks about the hardships of re-adjsuting. The past 6.5 months were by far the best months of my life. I completely changed as a person. Backpacking solo, I had to maintain an open mind, hope for the best, and think twice about decisions (like when I badly had to use the restroom, but was waiting for a bus and had no ... read more

....You know how the rest of it goes. However that is the only line of the song I actually know so it gets a bit boring singing just the one line over and over. So we're on our last day of San Fran today and we're just killing time at the moment in our hostel before we get our Greyhound to San Diego later tonight. Well we've been here for four days and Gary has already said he wants to live here. I'm counting the times he says that and already I think we'll be living all over the place as he seems to want to live everywhere we've been so far. Once we had arrived at our hostel after our wonderful Greyhound journey we decided to take advantage of the free waffle breakfast which is ... read more

Firstly i must apologise as i realise my blogs go on and on and on a little more but there is sooooo much to squeeze in that i cant even write about half of it! Believe it or not this is the condensed update... That said, here you are, enjoy.... So from the hectic and freezing urban jungle that is New York we took the 6 hour flight to laid-back California. The whole time we were in NY we saw people taking helicpoter trips over Manhattan thinking 'how amazing would that be! Shame we are budget travellers, doh'. Someone must have heard us as once our plane took off from JFK airport on the clear Friday morning it circled right around the whole of Manhattan and we got a bird's eye view of the lot. Just ... read more

I cannot believe that it is winter here, it feels like the end of the British summer. Still wearing trousers and a hoodie most of the time, but the sun is definatley hot enough to go bare armed during the day time, and I even have a slight tan mark, created by my top, catching the sun in all the usual hotspots, shoulders, chest, face. It has rained occasionally aswell, there is often a lot of rainfall in San Francisco in January, although it is really light rain, that you can barley feel, and it usually doesn't last that long anyway, so there is certainly nothing to complain of!! The atmosphere of this place is beautiful, it is very pretty to look at, has an amazing shopping area, with really large retail shops, like NY, must ... read more

So onwards we drove, further and further along the hairpin bends and icy cracked tarmac until we reached Kings Canyon. We started by General Grant, the 3rd largest tree in the world, followed by a trip through a forest of some of the largest and orangest trees we have ever seen. Snow was still on the ground, and a coyote padded right up to our car, but seemed rather surprised when I wound down my window to take a photo! We also saw Sherman Tree, this time the largest tree in the world, way too big to take a photo of the entire length, even with a wide angle lens!... read more

So I am still hanging with my cousins and aunt and uncle. Connor, the oldest, went back to school at San Diego State a few days ago. I have been chillin with Elliot, Anders and Grant. The surf sessions have been good, hopefully one of thes days I will have a ride longer than 2.5 seconds. Man Elliot can shred them waves. We went to the rock today. Morrow Rock is a huge volcanic rock that just chills right in the water. The waves kinda wrap around it and form a nice right wave. There is so much life in the water here, all kinds of birds just chillin and seals that sometimes pop their head up and just look at you, as if to say, "hey thats my wave you blubberless landlubber!" It was interesting ... read more

Hi gang Wow what a day. It seems that today has been more like a da and a half because it was so busy!! But what a fantastic day we had. I started my day visiting this most A-M-A-Z-I-N-G school which is like a "practice school"attached to the University of Southern California Channel Isles. I spent several enlightening hours looking at this wonderfully bi-lingual school and checking out the school environment including their Pre-school facility. What can I say?? I really enjoyed looking around and getting lots of ideas. Their "Home Ec"unit is attached to the Music section and they share a facility which they call a Diner. They are looking at changing the cafeteria food and so much more. They are also teaching the students bi-lingually which means they run a 50/50 program which changes ... read more

When: 28th Jan 2007 Where: El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve What: getting back in time into a historic Redwood forest This hike was an instant pick in 10 minutes. Almost 30 miles from home. almost half-point between hwy 92 & hwy 84 on CA 35. It was sunny when we started from home. But as we neared the coast, I could hardly see the mountains amidst all that fog. By the time we got onto CA 92, I wasn't so sure if we were going to do it at all. But then, as the unpredictable weather set it, it all seemed to make sense. We were driving on this ridge & surprisingly saw a clear ocean on our right & a foggy valley to our left! We parked the car at Skegg's point ... read more

Haha!! Success at last and here we are in Sunny California. We arrived right on time at 5.45 and we were through customs by 6.45am which was absolutely fantastic (marvellous even). The first 12 hours we sort of wandered around looking quite dazed from the length of flights and then after that Nicola fell asleep for a while (just couldn't stay awake) and then we went out for dinner with Wally to a really nice Chinese restaurant in Camarillo (Chesters Chinese Food) with his Mum and Step-Dad. It sort of drizzled for most of the day. Wally is an absolutely fantastic host who made us feel so at home. Bed by 8.30pm and slept so very well. Today was very exciting we headed for the La Brea Tar Pits (yes Charlotte we know - asphalt) and ... read more
