Hello Fellow Travelmates!! Sorry about the long delay but we have been experiencing some technological issues here in the USA. Briefly the converter which we had bought was not compatible to the computer power cord…..and the phone could not be forced onto the US mobile phone system. Well as they say you have to experience it to learn about it. So here we are after about a week uploading the information about our week (so far) in the US. Well, it is hard to know where to start…..briefly though here is the rundown:- The first full 3 days we stayed in Santa Paula. This was amazing. Wally was our host and so very nice. He arranged for us to see all sorts of marvelous things including schools, land fills (dumps) and the site of major housing ... read more

If you're in Hollywood you just have to shop in Rodeo Drive - well we drove down the street and peered in the windows! We did a little cruising around Beverley Hills - open mouthed at all the extrememly posh houses - very Wisteria Lane - and then on to Hollywood. We wandered outside the Chinese Theatre checking out the handprints in the pavement, and then posed for photo's with the Hollywood sgn in the background. Andy shopped for some boots - so he is now all kitted out ready for the ranch - apart from a cowboy hat which might be going a bit too far!! Today we took to the saddle and 2 wheels. We had a great day cycling along the coast cycle path and watching the world LA style. Our heads were ... read more

We arrived in San Francisco aprox 4.5hrs late last night. That seems to be par for the course on the longer western routes on Amtrak. After chatting with the conductor for a short while, he wrote out a small note with a transfer ticket which gave us a free bus ride from the train station in Emeryville, CA to the Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. The ride would only have cost us $12 but free sounds even better! Though the trains run late most of the time, Amtrak has a great policy of comping either a hotel room or additional travel to make it up to you. The conductor wrote that note as a favor saying that if anyone asked, we should just tell them that the train being late caused us to miss the ride ... read more

Hi buddies! Just a quick update from me again! Since last blog.... 4th week into the Winter quarter...school is sweet. Cold at times but bearable...riding a bike in the rain is not though. I might just have to resort to a flourescent rain poncho... Two weekends ago, Real life had a small group date night where one of the guys bible study groups had to organise a date for one of the girl's groups. Our group went over to the BFC house and got treated each to a rose, mini seranade and a splendid japanese meal. Well done to the boys! Then everyone got together at the ice rink and played this crazy European game called broom ball(kinda like ice hockey but with a different sorta stick and no skates). There were about 200 of us ... read more

Yesterday, Feb 3, we left Quartzite and headed south. We decided to go past Yuma and stop near Campo just north of Tecate. Last night we stayed at the Morena Lake RV Park which is nestled up here just outside of San Diego. Very nice park. We were very surprised to pass a high school called Mountain Empire High School. We had to laugh because we cannot see how this little place could populate a secondary school! The trip here showed us a lot of variation in the terrain. Just out side of Quartzite we began to see more Saguaro cactus again and then just miles later sand dunes!!!! Rving continues to be very popular in these parts and they have all the toys to play on the dunes!! We are still amazed at the number ... read more

It was fitting that I end my 6-month journey with a long train ride across the Western USA. I flew from Thailand to San Francisco via a long stop-over in Seoul, Korea. I only was in Frisco for a day so I didn't get to see much, but what I saw of it I liked. Seems like an exciting city. Basically just had the afternoon to walk around. Strolled through North Beach (Little Italy) and Chinatown and visited a Beat museum. Apart from my jetlag and lack of sleep I was also disoriented by my walk through Chinatown and by seeing all these Thai restaurants after having just went through Bangkok's Chinatown a couple days before. Which country am I in again? Oh yeah! Speaking english, Subway sandwhiches, water fountains, brushing my teeth without fear of ... read more

Thought I'd also chime in a bit here.. Anand and I realized that we have intuitively divided up responsibilities on all the planning on this trip - though personally i think i got the better end of the deal (unspoken and intuitive though it was)... the planning and making initial bookings with the travel agent, was my part, and finding our way, figuring things out on the road will be too, but he has taken care of all the business side of things - finding out abt visas, getting our docs together, confirming with the airline, reminding me to go get lots of passport photos, etc. The thing is that before the Europe trip we had lots of time to go over it all, and this time have basically just done stuff randomly. Hopefully between the ... read more

Soooo...THE DAY has finally arrived! I leave the country tonight so there is no going back now. I am a mess of different thoughts and emotions right now, but mostly I am just tired after getting a cumulative total of 90 min sleep last night. This is partly due to my excitement preventing any chance of sleep and having to get up at 6 to drive to San Francisco and back just to pick up my passport and visas. Note to travelers...guard your passport with your life, cause it is not a joy to replace. Hopefully I'll be able to catch some zzz's on my red-eye flight to the Bahamas. This is my last chance to use my computer from home as I am just about to finish packing everything up. *Sorry my first entry in ... read more
