Up as early as we could manage (~6.00 am) and hit the road (~8.00 am) to head north over Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods the first stop of the day. We took the wrong exit (again) and got off early (will get the hang of the system eventually). Once off the highway the drive to Muir Woods was VERY nice! (with the top down of course) and the trees were SPECTACULAR! A coffee and a (very) salty pretzel and back on the road . . . So what do you have for lunch when time is short and you're racing the sun to Yosemite National Park? All you can eat ribs of course! I only managed four ribs as I was trying not to be a glutten, besides I had a long drive still ahead. ... read more

So we drove on to Yosemite with a brief stop in a motel in Merced to give our backs a rest. We were told it would be impossible to get a space on a camp site but actually we had no trouble. We stayed here for a few days and went on a horse ride, hired bikes and did a couple of walks. The famous waterfalls weren't flowing but we saw lots of wildlife - a couple of different types of squirrel including small red stripey ones, a tarantula, lots of deer, a wolf ( we think ). On our last walk on which I left Sara for the bears half way up I saw a large Bob Cat which is a lot cuter than a mountain lion looking mostly like a super size moggy.... read more

Ok, so this is a "first" blog... something I don't really do as I prefer my Livejournal. But in the interests of trying to get organized I have decided that I would rather have a separate space for my travel comments, review of resturants, etc. Anyway, I recently went camping in Yosemite National Park in California. It wasn't my first time camping there, however it was the first at the Lower Pines site in Yosemite Valley. I have to say that I really enjoyed the spot, it had a good view of Half Dome and the surrounding area, was close to Curry Village, and IMO was not too crowded. However, if you want a lot of space for your campsite, this is probably not the campground for you. I felt as if it was far enough ... read more

After waking up in Bishop and packing up all the stuff we headed off towards our next destination - this amazing, yummy German bakery about 2 minutes from the campsite! It was amazing, so much yummy food. We had been warned we were going on a serious hike at Yosemite National Park so I decided why not make the most of our little stop and buy quite a few yummy things to eat for the day. Outside we met a guy who called himself the "Sierra Phantom" and claimed to be the inventor of glitter. He was quite a funny character. Just looked like a normal old man but had some stories to tell ya! The drive to Yosemite was very long (about 4 or 5 hours) but when we got there we knew it was ... read more

Yogi and Boo Boo's big adventure...... Jen and I got ourselves ready for our trip to Yosemite national park on Monday the 18th July, both pretty nervous and not sure what to expect, we knew it would be a whole bunch of people sharing one bus for 4 days without showers but we didn't know how many or how it would all work out at all. We prepared ourselves by buying a couple of bottles of wine and some small bottles of whiskey and brandy, so at least we'd get through thte first night if nothing else! We filled ourselves up on the free food at the hostel again - really tasty and so much of it, I can't praise this hostel enough. So we ate up and then a few people gathered in the foyer ... read more

Kevin and I woke up really early this morning and drove up to Sylmar to meet up with Keston, Sally, Erika, Rocio, Rick, and the 3 kids. We met everybody at a Mcdonalds in Sylmar off the Interstate 5. After having breakfast, we all set off in our 2 vehicles for the 4 hour drive up to Yosemite. Just before arriving at Yosemite, we stopped in the town of Oakhurst to pick up alcohol, food, and supplies. We finally arrived at Yosemite around midday and stopped at a scenic vantage point overlooking the entire Yosemite Valley. With one of the best views in the entire park, the viewpoint was crowded with visitors making a quick stop to take their obligatory photos and soak in the scenery. Continuing our drive into Yosemite Valley, we made a ... read more
