We departed Vegas late morning after catching up on some much needed Z’s. The sun was bright and it looked like we were headed for some hot weather in Death Valley. Soon enough we confirmed our suspicions. Death Valley was interesting but unfortunately the visibility was not great here either. We still enjoyed watching the elevation drop and the temperature rise as we drove through it! Other cars were scarce so the park was very quiet - as if we were the only living things around for miles because we probably were! The temperature went above 110 while we were there and was predicted to hit 120! We stopped at a family owned resort on the west edge of the park for a big frozen smoothie. While we were there one of the employees caught a ... read more

Hi everybody! We thought we'd post a travel blog on our trip to Yosemite National Park and the Inyo National Forest. On Monday, we left Santa Cruz CA and our wonderful hostess, Berta Hees. After spending a few weeks in Santa Cruz for the Cabrillo Contemporary Music Festival (Mark is a member of the orchestra), it was time to get out into the wilderness! We had breakfast at Pacific Coffee Roasters in Aptos, CA and drove toward Yosemite. Because of mudslides earlier this spring/summer, the southeast entrance to Yosemite from the Midpines area is closed. We opted to drive in via the western route, the Tioga Road (route 120 at Groveland). We arrived at this entrance just under five hours after leaving Aptos. This is the first time we drove all the length of the Tioga ... read more

We were up at 4am today to make the two hour drive to Glacier point in Yosemite National Park so that we could watch day break. This is a great spot to see the whole of the park and valley below us, and to really appreciate the scale of the park's rock formations. Making our way back to San Fran we did come across evidence of California doing their bit for the environment. A large collection of wind turbines next to the busy 8 lane highway! Later, mostly just to say that we did at least a bit of walking around San Francisco this visit, we walked to Little Italy. There we had a lovely budget-busting meal, soaking up the vibes from our pavement table and enjoying the sound of a 20-strong biker gang's Harleys. ... read more

Making our way into Yosemite National Park took us about 1 1/2 hours (not that that should surprise us at peak season but annoying all the same). Once inside we were met by the awesome site of El Capitan, the half dome, a number of waterfalls and a very impressive glaciated valley. Walkers and photographers heaven. And some huge erratic rocks for those of you who paid attention in geography lessons. We also went in search for the very large trees called 'Giant Sequoias' related to the famous redwoods. These trees in total volume are the the largest living things known to humans. We tried showing our love by hugging one but got nowhere close. Bumped into Ken whilst there which wasn't surprising. Ed asked where the tree that you can drive through was, but ... read more

My friend, Deepa, had come over from NC and we had planned "ladies day out". My husband was more than happy to let go of our car(and me, of course) for 2 days. I am meeting her after 2003, I guess. She shifted companies & a little while later, I got married and came to US. She joined me later in the US, but in the east coast. Thursday, July 27th, I drove over to show her the Pacific Ocean. She was actually stunned most of the times. Only then, I realized the importance of seeing places as a newbie. I don't remember, but I think I was dumbstruck by the Pacific(the first time I saw her) & I could trade anything for a drive along CA's Big Sur coast(till date). I had seen pictures of ... read more

Landed in America after the strangest flight of all time... as we went ove the international date line we landed in Los Angeles 8and1/2 hours BEFORE we took of from Fiji!! We only gave ourselves 1 full day in LA as there wasn't that much we wanted to do there. So we walked down Hollywood Boulevard - doing the Walk of Fame - where celebs are given marble stars on the pavement with there name inside. Apparently there is a selection comitee so that only real celebs get there name on the Walk of Fame but someone obviously isn't doing there job right as 'stars' like Judge Judy and Marie-Kate and Ashley somehow get to grace the same pavement as real stars like Samuel L Jackson, The Beatles and The Rugrats! Visited the Chinese Theatre where ... read more

After leaving Bryce spent the night in Tonopah, NV. Not much happening there. Went to dinner with a couple I met from Grand Junction, CO. Good Mexcian food. I had attempted to make it to Mammoth but was thwarted by weather. Pic attached. Today I flew through the valleys to Bishop and then Mammoth. What can I say? The pics don't do it justice. Met Dan from Eureka area. Rented a car, this time a Subaru Forester, and drove into town. Dan and I ate at the Good Life Cafe. Kind of fitting. I decided to go up to Yosemite from the East side via Rte 120 out of Lee Vining. Its called Tioga Road and goes through, appropriately, Tioga Pass. I was absolutely stunned by how beautiful it was. It took hours and hours to ... read more

Arrived in Los Angeles, CA yesterday and did the long drive to my hotel in Mariposa. I was supposed to about 1/2 hour away from Yosemite but when I headed out this morning (luckily very early), I discovered that the rock slide that I had been told would be gone by now was still there. As a result, I had to take a much longer route to get to Yosemite making it about a hour drive. Very scenic but I was anxious to get to the park and get to my tour group. It was going to be a full day's tour and I wanted to make the best of it since this was going to be my only day to see Yosemite unfortunately. The drive into Yosemite is hard to describe. So incredibly scenic and ... read more

Around 1 pm we got to Yosemite National Park in eastern CA. Now, for those of you that know me well, it's obvious that mountain passes overlooking several thousand-foot dropoffs makes my deserted dirt-road panicked drive look like a day at the beach. I'm sure the scenery was spectacular, however, these pictures were the first I saw of it because I was hyperventilating and white-knuckled behind the wheel at the time. It was awe-inspiring when the terrain levelled out and I could enjoy the snow-capped mountains, the floating ice on the clear lakes, and the green pastures. The best comparison I could make was that it looked like THE SOUND of MUSIC. I think it was worth the drive when all was said and done. We made it to Oakley, CA (about 40 mi. NE of ... read more
