With tears gleaming in our eyes we packed our bags (why wouldn't everything fit! I swear our bags have shrunk!) and farewelled the Green Tortoise in San Francisco and its lovely bagels. We very strongly recommend it as a great place to meet people and doss down in San Francisco....always something going on and 3 free dinners a week can't be bad. However, our time had come, the road was calling, and we hopped on a bus for Emeryville. And a train to Merced. And a bus to Midpines. And you don't want to know about the hill we had to walk up in the pitch black after the second bus broke down. Well, ok so technically the bus was promptly replaced but there was a very big hill after that. Fortunately, a hearty dinner awaited ... read more

I looked out of the window as often as I could whilst on the bus and train journey from L.A. to Yosemite National Park. The landscape changes were extreme and I was leaving the city life behind me to embrace a bit of fresh air. Being on the road as a solo traveller again caused me to grip my pack with more caution than the past couple of weeks. Best to be safe right? There didn't seem to be any dodgy characters in sight, but you can never be too certain. When I finally arrived into the village in the valley, I brushed off my boots and tiptoed into a swish hotel to use their baggage storage facilities. I couldn't help giggling when I saw my duct taped pack sitting next to several polished Louis Vuitton ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 5 California - it’s cold and it’s damp! 25th February - 6th March 2006 Salton Sea, Mecca, Joshua Tree National Park, Twentynine Palms, Palm Springs, San Bernardino Mountains, Rim of the World, Kern, Pixley, Sequoia National Park - and the Snowy Mountains! The morning brought white pelicans to the still waters of Salton Sea, shallow and serene at its northerly end where we camped overnight. Fresh water flows into the lake from the Alamo and the New Rivers, but Salton is below sea level and there is no outlet to the sea. The rivers help to irrigate the flat plains where palm trees flourish alongside California vines, orange and lemon trees, artichokes and other things under plastic - so they learned something from Spain! The farms hereabouts are clearly prosperous, but ... read more

For a long weekend in February, me and a group of the international exchange students rented some cars and went to do some sight seeing in the north of California. We drove up to Yosemite National Park for some wholesome few days in nature. We left on the friday before the long weekend (big mistake) and had to drive through LA to get there. It should have been an 8 hour drive but it took about 14 with traffic. I was driving one car. We were supposed to change drivers but i didn't trust anyone else to drive in the snow and sleet so i ended up driving the whole 14 hours myself with one 3 stops. Think i must have had about 8 red bulls to see me through. We got there and i was ... read more

Got up, checked out, then discovered that the hostel computer was stuck on 'free-vend' so we abused the free internet access and updated this rather interesting and witty travel blog until 2pm. The drive to San Francisco started out on a long and windy country road through some beautiful scenery of lakes and valleys but the constant swaying of the car made Louisa feel sickly, I felt a bit queasy too! Along the way we nearly got lost in Modesdo but eventually made it to San Francisco just in time for rush hour, nice. We drove over the bridge into downtown which was a bit of a nightmare of cars, trams, hills, and flashing lights, all confusing in the dark. We decided to stay out of the centre of town at the Fort Mason Hostelling International ... read more

The day began in spectacular style with a cup of Tetley tea and marmite on toast. We made up a picnic and headed into Yosemite Valley. We went on a couple of treks round the valley floor and were happy not to encounter a mountain lion or bear that had forgotten to hibernate! We walked to the base of the Lower Yosemite Falls and later trekked (in the snow) out to Mirror Lake, which had fantastic reflections of the surrounding mountains. The scenery is stunning and we could have spent a lot longer here trekking around, although at this time of year it's cold, snowy and icy, and we didn't really have the clothing or equipment to tackle some of the trails which were out-of-bounds due to the ice. That evening we had more of the ... read more

We spent most of the day driving the final leg to Yosemite National Park and to our home for the night, the Yosemite Bug rustic mountain lodge. We had our own room in a little hut which unforunately had a freezing cold shared bathroom. The day was drawing to a close so we decided to have a quick wander round the scenic area of the hostel with the help of our guide, the hostel's dog! Having lost the dog after about a minute, we wandered alone through the trees and up the stream to a small pool ideal for bathing, but not in winter! It was getting dark so we headed back to the hostel (the dog was back there already!). That night we cracked open Louisa's birthday wine a day early and shared it with ... read more

When we started winding into the Yosemite hills on the 10th, we were greeted with a deer standing just to the side of the road - stunned and looking at us. It took a while before he bolted back off into the forest - how cool. Once we got to our accommodation just as we got out of the car, two raccoons came running out from behind us and across the path in front of us. It was the first time that I have ever seen a racoon and they seemed tame and a little cheeky. They raced up onto the bin and fished out some bits of food and ran off with them. As I was taking photos of them at one stage, one noticed me and started trotting towards me. I didn’t quite know ... read more

With a few days spare before being required at our first performance in Las Vegas we thought we'd go on a road trip!! We hired a Jeep Cherokee and took on the Great American Highway Network. With Cookie behind the wheel and me (navigator extraordinaire) behind the map nothing could stop us bar the dire predictions of 10 feet of snow and mud slides from Cookie's San Fran mates. (Apparently, and this is news to me (?!?) Americans are partial to the use of the hyperbole and the closest we came to any sleet was the icy machines at a few of the "gas stations" along the way. Yosemite is considered by all Americans as a remarkable natural wonder. It's proximity to a few major cities (Fan Fran for example) makes it the most visited national ... read more

Sorry this has taken so long to post, we are experiencing computer difficulties, first we couldn't access the website, then we couldn't upload photos. 05/10/05 Lone Pine We spent the morning in Bishop sorting out Hospital paperwork and checking e-mail in the library. When we left the library I had a parking ticket for "parking more than 18 inches from the kerb" since I was parked on the left side of the road facing in the wrong direction. We went to the Police station to see if we could pay the fine (and also to check if there were any other laws which we might inadvertantly break), and after a brief discussion the nice police officer let us off the ticket on the grounds that we Brits drive on the wrong side of the road anyway ... read more
