It's absolutely a cool feeling when you're sitting in a cafe talking to an attractive man, then he proudly intruduces his cute boyfriend to you. Ahh...How disappointing! But indeed, men couples have created a beautiful picture holding hands under the rainbow flag in this gay community, Castro. Unfortunately, I came here with my beloved mother so didn't dare to stay too much longer. Chinatown in SF is another highlight to my surprise. It's home to many fine antiques, high quality arts and crafts. You can sit down and listen to old Chinese street artists playing ErHu, I don't remember seeing that kinda scene even in China nowaday. Grant Avenue's prosperous and drug-free image does give me a ancient Tang dynasty feel. whereas many other Chinatowns that I've seen look more like QingRenJie than TangRenJie. Anyways, heard ... read more

OK -- Here goes! Following Ed's departure on Saturday AM, I got ready to travel with just about 24 hours notice. Work issues wrapped up, dog care coordinated, and bags packed, I headed to SFO International. Caught at non-stop Cathay Pacific flight which ran 14 hours from 1AM US Pacific Time until 6AM THE NEXT DAY Hong Kong time. "Let's do the time warp again!!" No photos for Sunday, because I looked like hell after battling all night with the guy who was sharing the 4 center seats with me. Not so good at sharing, he stretched out across 3 of the 4 seats. After a little not so subtle nudging from me, it all balanced out. Thank god for the video iPod (THANKS, ED!) ... I was pretty much entertained non-stop by "Fat Actress," "Weeds," ... read more

We got to SF on Thursday to several emails and voicemails about our mortgage so unfortunately spent the afternoon dealing with that. Thankfully things seem to be in better shape now and we were able to go out and enjoy a fun dinner with Neera & Sanjiv (Laura's friends who we're staying with). Friday consisted of one last REI trip to exchange Mike's backpack and then seeing Mission Impossible 3 - very good. Then we stopped by Laura's old office to say hi and enjoyed a fun dinner with her fomer coworker. Today we're going to get out of the SF clouds and go to Sonoma for some sunshine and wine and then tomorrow it is wheels up to Beijing! ... read more

It's good to be back to school. Not the school that I used to go to, but Berkeley campus of University of California. With the assistance of a map, I'm finding my way to the school. A couple of blocks before I reach there, the street was crowded with restaurants, food stands featuring a variety of cuisines from Japanese to Indian to Italian to Brazilian. The mixture of different smells signals my hand to reach for my not-so-thick wallet. And soon I've developed a strong sense of sympathy for my schoolmates back home. With a full stomach, I continue my path. Surprisingly I feel like I'm the little red hat on the way to old and sick grandma's maison. The campus is a forest spoted with a few classical-looking buildings. Even the trees are full of ... read more

Got a late start today while working on last minute adjustments and getting last minute supplies for Tris. We were finally underway at around 1pm and rode from Tris' mom's house to the BART Station nearby. We then todr it to San Francisco and began the ride to Baker Beach beyond the Golden gate Bridge so we could actually dip in the Pacific. We took a few pictures there and then rode back to where we came from to catch a ferry to Vellejo. We did a lot of urban riding today which eventually trailed off once we left the downtown area. We had the lovely aroma of cows for the duration of the ride to Benicio where we had a little trouble finding a place to bivy (sleep). We settled on a drainage near an ... read more

Hello Everyone! The Ice Cream Dream Team has some very exciting news; we felt that the team name would not really be truly fulfilled unless we were accompanied by the Godfather of Gouda himself, Tris! In a truly fantastic turn of events Tris managed to shuffle around some EMT refresher dates and some other family obligations in order to join us for the first leg of the journey. He will be able to ride for about 3 weeks, hopefully sticking with us into Utah. His mother has been quite gracious in allowing us to stay the night at her house in Concord before we set out on the road. We will start riding tomorrow morning from her house to the BART, which will take us into San Francisco so we can start the trip in style ... read more

Well hello fellow Marist Volunteers and fans of our travelblog! I haven't checked in for a while so I thought I would write a quick post. There hasn't been too much new and exciting here in San Francisco although things have been going very well. Just as it seems like I am finally getting settled and have comfortably aquainted myself with all the local customs its almost time to count the days left in my west coast adventure. Work is going very well at the shelter. One of my coworkers recently left on maternity leave which allowed me to pick up a few cases of my own. Both clients who have moved out received permanent housing giving me a 100% success rate!(as much as I would like to take full credit for this I am pretty ... read more

It’s daddy’s birthday, I’m leaving him to see mom. Dating back to 42 years ago today, As 4-years old kids who had been suffering from the flying bombs of U.S. army in Vietnam, Dad and mom did not know, there were more than 700 students and young people marched through the city of San Francisco to revolt against the U.S. government’s savage war, and thus indirectly helped them to sail to the harbor of peace. It was known as the May 2nd Movement. Arriving at the international airport of San Francisco in the early morning, I was rewarded with a beautiful weather instantly. A thin T-shirt was good enough for staying in the pleasant temperature zone. My travel companion, grandma, was picked up by her San Franciscoer sister, then they waited at the airport for the ... read more

Things to Do Walk along Embarcadero from Ferry Building to Fisherman's Wharf Great view of the Bay and the bridge. If you get hungry there is tons of great food at the Ferry Building (Slanted Door for Vietnamese, Hog Island for Oysters, Golden Gate Meat for Pastrami sandwich, Cowgirl Creamery for chinese, Miette for cupcake/lemon tart, Scharffen Berger for chocolates .... or at Fisherman's Wharf (a cup of chowder or Dungeness crab or Ghirardelli Chocolate) Visit a museum. There is the MOMA in downtown SF, DeYoung in the Golden Gate Park, Legion of Honor in the Presidio. All great places to simulate the mind and spend a wonderful afternoon. SAN FRANCISCO! Our first family vacation that we actually flew with all four of us on a planned trip. My wife, Patty, son Carson (8) and daughter, Carleigh (5) thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our trip. San Francisco is so beautiful with tons to do and see. The weather was ideal during our week. We took this trip in June 2005. We found our hotel online, Travel Lodge Golden Gate on Lombard street within walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf area. We made a great choice. The price was reasonable and the room was fine for our family which didn't spend much time at the hotel anyway. The location was great. We rented a Ford Explorer because we knew we would drive around the city and to several spots outside the city. We spent $1000 for four ... read more
