Arrived into SF noonish, hit the BART and was in town by 12:30! YAY! Now I can say out load what I've always thought...San Francisco IS one of the greatest cities in the world. Love it! Rode the cable car...went to the Top of the Mark...ahhhh...wonderful...next stop...home. In Conclusion... As this trip is winding down... thought this would be a good time to reflect. Also note some facts that all may not be aware of including me till I thought it over!... Gone for only 2 months I had: 1 - 'round-the-world' ticket which I acquired from Aeroplan points (that's right...I didn't pay for it!). This took me: on 21 Flights to 13 countries on 6 continents in 2 hemispheres which means I am now almost completely convinced that the earth is in fact round. Traveling ... read more

Welcome. If you're here, it probably means that we've said goodbye to you in person. Months from now, you will be missed. But not just yet. Right now we're too excited to sleep. As you probably know, Stephanie and Del are headed on a full round-the-world adventure over the next two-plus months spanning three continents and five countries: San Francisco (USA) - St. Petersburg/Moscow/Irkutsk (Russia) - Ulan Baatar (Mongolia) - Beijing/Xi'an/Shanghai/Guilin (China) - Bangkok/Chiang Mai (Thailand) - Bali (Indonesia) and then back to our new home in New York City, USA. We'll try and keep this site updated with words and pictures on a weekly basis as we progress, but no guarantees. Our plans could be foiled by boundless hazards, such as a lack of internet cafes near Lake Baikal or even just frustration with the ... read more

We departed the motor coach deep in the heart of San Francisco at World Famous Fisherman’s Wharf. With no accommodation booked we headed to the pay phone on Pier 39 to make some calls. After calling 5 or 6 fully booked hostels we came across a hostel with some availability for all 4 nights. Following instructions we boarded a tram and headed into downtown. Immediately after leaving the waterfront followed the plush hotels and the high-rise towers of the business district. Following that we slipped through a crack in the space-time vortex and entered hell! In the space of one block the area changed from spotless city slickers to squalid city slums. Drug-driven hoboes and the mentally ill literally lined the streets. High street shops turned into DSS welfare centres, pawn shops and porn shops. As ... read more

The journey from Vancouver was ok but long, 26 hours!, customs was fine, in fact all the officer said to me was where are you going, I replied 'San Francisco' and he said 'go on then'! He didn’t even look at my passport that well! Not complaining though as it was a relief to get through quickly. Three people on the bus had to have their bags and everything searched though! I would be gutted if that happened to me, takes so long to get it all back in! We also met two girls who we had seen in Chicago, Faye and Elana, on the bus. Anyway, I had heard so many high reviews of San Fran from people we had met along the way so I was a little bit worried that it would not ... read more

San Francisco When we arrived in San Francisco the first thing that hit us was the temperature difference! All of a sudden the jumpers were coming out and the windbreakers as well, the wind was freezing! We decided to spend the afternoon driving the 49 mile scenic route around the city. This was well sign posted in some places and not at all in others so we got lost a couple of times. The route took us through streets lined with Victorian houses all side by side, a lovely park, and up Twin Peaks for a view of the city that rivaled the view of Auckland from Mt Eden. We also went down to Fisherman’s wharf and looked out across the bay to Alcatraz (where we were headed the next day). The route also took us ... read more

Its our last day in San Francisco today after spending 3 nights here. Its been fun, much nicer than LA but I still don't care too much for America! We didn't know what to do on our first day here so made the mistake of going shopping and again bought a few things - the daily budget isn't going too well these days! But we did find some good sales in Nine West and Guess and I bought these gorgeous stilettos for $30 (about 20 pounds) and a Guess watch for the same price. Today I need to go and get a new bag as nothing fits in my old one anymore and the handle broke so going to China Town to find a cheap bag. The shops here are quite good though and we even ... read more

We arrived in San Francisco from LA after spending the whole day on a bus! We are used to that now, so it's no big deal. First impressions of San Francisco, not as glitzy as LA but then not as bad as some of the less impressive areas. The greyhound station, however, was not in a very savoury part of town. San Francisco was a bit of a blur to be honest; it came and went so quickly. We did a whole day walking tour of the district, which took all of 4.5 hours, the next day we couldn't walk! We saw all of the must see sights, the Golden Gate Bridge, the street with the most angles in the world and, of course, Alcatraz. All very interesting but to be honest, we are soo exhausted ... read more

Hello all! Today was our last full day in SanFran, and it was a nice one. This morning we went to the Exploratorium, which is an entirely hands-on building of science experiments. The kids were able to learn about sight, magnetism, plants, etc. I wish there were one in Utah! We even made a few trips through the tactile dome, in which you are engrossed in complete darkness and must crawl through tunnels, square rooms, down slides, and through foam in order to get out. The challenge is to identify what it is that you're feeling; the walls are covered with odd objects, such as tennis rackets, paint brushes, and keys. The kids LOVED it! This afternoon/evening we hung out in Golden Gate Park and people watched for a lilttle while. We were too late to ... read more

Myself, Dan, Al and Berrett continued our holiday to San Francisco!! We were staying at the Stratford Hotel which was right next to union square and only a tram journey away from Fishermans Wharf. The rooms were nice and we had our own little corridor that just connected our two rooms. The first day we were all up early and spent the whole day sightseeing and packing as much in as possible. We took a tram to Fishermans Wharf and saw loads of sealions that sunbath on one of the piers. We also went to the aquarium and took a ferry over to visit Alcatraz. The prison tour was good and we had an audio guide so we didnt miss anything and learnt all the stories of escapes, killings and all about its prisoners. Once back ... read more
