Temp: 22, sunny but chilly wind Thanks everyone for your well wishes, i think they have worked. Feeling much better today, thank goodness. Couldn't have handled another day of that. Today started off slow as didn't get to bed til after 4am as Ron and Mary got in about 3:30am. We dragged ourselves out of bed, had our free continental brekky provided by the hotel and showered before making our way in our hire car down the Interstate 10 out to Malibu. It was nice but nothing too spesh, so we jumped back in the car and headed for Santa Monica, parked at the pier and walked up for some photos and seafood lunch. It was quite chilly on the pier, the wind was icey, but the sun was out. After this we headed up into ... read more

For our last full day in America we thought we would explore some of the beaches. First stop, 40 mins away was Liz's first choice - Malibu beach. We parked up, walked down through some marshland and onto the beach - It was practically deserted, We could have sunbathed and had the whole beach to ourselves! Liz & Nige paddled but myself & Andy bottled it, it looked freezing! Next up was Venice beach - A favourite of Nigel's, This was 15 mins down the road and absolutely heaving, we stopped in a bar for a drink and of course some people watching, we could have sat there all day taking in the various sights, We then walked up the promenade and on to Muscle Beach, and then the skate park where MTV was getting ready ... read more

All the travelling and sight-seeing finally caught up with me, so I took a day off and went down to the beach area (though not the beach itself) and spent the day reading. The alternative motive behind this quite day was that we were planning to go to a midnight viewing of Iron Man 2. Given that I had yet to make it past 11pm, this was no mean feat. In the end I managed it, with the help of much caffeine in its various forms. The film was fun and beforehand we went to a Cuban restaurant (called Versailles of all things) where we had a lovely meal. Most of the food seemed to be pork, fried in a garlicky sauce (called Mojo) and served with fried plantain, rice and black beans. It was delicious. ... read more

My first day. Decided that the best way to beat jet lag was to be in the sun as much as possible. So we went to the beach. We went to Venice first off - for those who know London, think Soho meets Camden but all on a promenade by the sea. The stalls offered anything and everything and between that and the throngs of people, I don't think I took much in! It became a bit of a colourful blur... I'm still trying to get over how wide the streets are, which makes even a normal road seem like a motorway with shops either side. The bus stop (yes we braved public transport - and the bus had a bike rack on its nose, genius!) we got off at was next to this drugs store ... read more

It wouldn't be LA without...

Today I went to weather.com and looked at the 10-day forecast for Johannesburg. I've been doing this off and on for weeks, trying to get a feel for what sort of weather I might expect. Will it be rainy? Is it starting to cool off? Will I pretty much need to carry a "just in case" hoodie everywhere I go? The answers to all of these questions are speculative at best... nevermind that the stereotype of weather forecasters being wrong 50% of the time is deeply rooted in reality. Anyway. Today I went and checked, and there was Saturday, March 13. Even if it's wrong, it's real. It's THERE. And it's close. Today is my last Friday in the United States for 4 weeks. Yeah, I can live with that.... read more

After another few hectic days, we desperately needed a sleep-in. It turns out that LA had a large storm move through, so it had rained most of the night and was still raining all morning. So it was a good morning to take it easy. Once the rain eased late morning, we headed down to Santa Monica. We checked out the huge pier (the official end of Route 66), before walking along the beach toward Venice Beach. We encountered some weird and wacky stuff along this walk - the only shops open were tattoo parlours and pipe shops (not your musical instrument type). And the only people around were either homeless or insane (the kind that talk to themself and then get angry when you don’t respond to them!). We ducked into a bistro for lunch ... read more

Decided today was a beach day so we head for the sand at Santa Monica Beach. Laura investigated the pier, cirque de soleil were hanging around by the shops and restaurants. Looked around the shops then ate in La Salsa, taco' s and fajitas, tasty good. Laura got a salsa attack from a random. I was not well from killer bugs so relaxed in the hostel.... read more

After 5 weeks of packing in so many activities and adventures i decided it was time to finally relax California style. I stopped in Santa Barbara which is a small city right on the coast about 2 hours north of Los Angeles. This was an absolutely awesome place, and to set the typical Californian scene, as i walked to my hostel from the greyhound the air was rye with the oh so sweet smell of marijuana. Santa Barbara is a college town but with a very classy feel. Everything is located along one main high street with a open shopping centre just off this street. The place is littered with sophisticated bars and restaurants but all offering student friendly prices so was a perfect opportunity for me to take a break from cooking cheaply and to ... read more
